Today during a special event at the Game Developers Conference, Sony announced that a consumer model of the PlayStation 4 VR headset Project Morpheus will launch in the first half of 2016. A new prototype headset was also revealed, which you can see above.

The new Morpheus prototype features nine tracking LEDs, which Sony says should make positional tracking more accurate. The new prototype, which features a 5.7-inch screen, also supports a 100-degree field of view and 360-degree tracking.

Enhancements are being made to the new Morpheus headset centered around ergonomics and display. The latest model sports a 1920 x RGB x 1080 OLED display, meaning all pixels have RGB sub-pixels. This enables low persistence, removing motion blue cased by the LCD screen from the original prototype, Sony said.

The newest Morpheus prototype also features a 120hz refresh rate, which is double compared to the first edition, Sony said.

Sony has also made improvements to the Morpheus design in terms of comfort. The new prototype features a single band headset design and quick release button. This, Sony says, should make it easier for players to put it on and take it off. The new headset is also lighter than the original model, hopefully helping users find it to be more comfortable during play sessions.

Pricing for the consumer model of Morpheus was not announced. Sony also confirmed it will show more games for the device at E3 in June and during other industry events.

"With the technical specs achieved on the new prototype, we are one step closer to realizing our vision for making amazing VR experiences on PS4, and ultimately to deliver a real sense of presence to players," PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida said. "We believe that the near-final technology of Morpheus combined with the power of PS4 will provide a standard for game developers to target as they build on their creative ideas and turn them into VR games and experiences."

GameSpot is getting a first-hand look at the new Morpheus headset today at GDC. Check back later for lots more.

Wow 120hertz! Oculus rift creasent bay and Vive has only 90hertz. Wonder where all the people who claimed that the ps4 with the morpheus couldn't handle more than 60hertz are at:) competition is gonna get though that's for sure and that is really good for us consumers.

<< LINK REMOVED >> yeah, 100 degree fov and 120hz..........them graphics are gonna have to run on very low settings. plus, 1080p is terrible.

Also, the others are prototypes, chances are they will run at 120hz as well as well as a higher resolution with a wider aspect ratio. Add to that, Oculus are including some high end audio with true 3D sound which everyone was raving about with Crescent Bay.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The avegant Glyph does 120hz in each eye, plus it shoots the image directly into your retina instead of screwing around with screens.

Granted, it doesn't have 100degree FOV, but it does interact with ANY HDMI device.

<< LINK REMOVED >> While not full VR, it does have head tracking.

It's perfectly suited for gaming. Especially considering it will do 3D with any video source that will output it through HDMI.

Still just a prototype, we might see 1480p Oled screens in the consumer version of the morpheus. About graphics, it's all about optimization, techniques and how much skills the developers are in the possesion of, take a look at The Last of us on the ps3, it's amazing looking allmost unbelivable how Naughty dog pulled that off. Competition is just healthy and good for us consumers and im sure oculus rift, vive and morpheus will succeed.

You do realize that a PS4 still has to run this, don't you? If they put the processing power into the headset to allow what you are suggesting, the thing will cost $2000.

Unlike trying to run it to a broad variety of large screen tv's, this is in your face, on 5.7 inches... much less difficult to do.

If they want this thing to really sell, they're going to have to price it at $150, max. I have no idea how they'll be able to do that.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Really anything under the price of the system itself I would think...

Realisticly... I am guessing 5-600 bucks.
Which for that price, you can just get an avegant glyph.

Avagant glyph will look like you just have a 48" tv 2 meters away from you, it's not really VR in that sence like The Rift morpheus and vive. Its just a hmd for movie watching, at least that's what i have heard.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Actually it's an 80" screen. Plus it's not just for movies, it has head tracking as well.

The thing is designed for anything that is HDMI, game systems, smartphones, whatever your heart desires.

Plus it does full on 3D. I for one will be playing Skyrim in Full 3D with the thing as soon as I am able.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You my friend, want an "avegant glyph".

These devices for VR won't be able to do that.

The glyph however, is like a godsend for people who want a real HMD.

Man, I hope these guys finally get the pricing right on a peripheral release... I don't think it's happened in the history of their previous peripherals yet. EyeToy, those bedroom-toy-looking motion controllers, the 3D glasses... All way over-priced.

Add to that the guy's racing wheel posted below. Ridiculously over-priced.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I'm actually looking forward to this, but I'm also ticked that some of the racing games that will use it DO NOT SUPPORT MY GT BRAND RACE WHEEL! I spent like 400 bucks on the thing JUST for the PS3 and the upcoming PS4 racers with VR support. Now I'm out of luck.... In other news, apparently Thief supports it also, which might be cool to see.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah because Sony had the incredibly expensive launching console with a useless camera right? Or make a weak piece of HD but have to charge $300 because of a giant tablet you wan to call a controller.

Sony deserves criticism for everyone else, overpriced hardware shouldn't be one of them. The PS4 is great value and so was the Gold Headset. Not only a great value they were also cheap considering what you're buying.

Guess what this wont take off for the PS4 look at Xbox 360 and the Kinect People where developing for it then suddenly halted because not enough people where using it. Even on Xbox one people only use it for voice commands and browsing when it comes to gaming, which isall a VR head set can do no one will buy it no matter what the price tag.
