PS4 MLB 14: The Show Online Support Ending in June

With MLB 15: The Show coming soon, Sony announces plans to discontinue online support for last year's pro baseball game.

Sony has announced plans to discontinue online support for professional baseball game MLB 14: The Show across all platforms. Online support will officially come to an end for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita editions of the game on June 18, Sony writes on its support site.

With MLB 15: The Show releasing later this month, it's not altogether surprising that Sony would be focusing squarely on that game.

Sony regularly discontinues online support for legacy games to focus on new ones. But some gamers on Reddit aren't happy about online support coming to a close so soon after launch--in the case of the PS4 edition of MLB 14: The Show, it's just 13 months after release.

The online shutdown news was announced on PlayStation's UK website. GameSpot has followed up with a representative for Sony Computer Entertainment America, asking if the discontinuation also applies to North America.

MLB 15: The Show, which includes a raft of improvements over last year's game, launches March 31 across PS3, PS4, and PS Vita. See some screenshots in the gallery below.

Oh for ****'s sake, Sony has been doing this shit since MLB 08, and now you people noticed? Damn, all this bullshit for a bloody sports game. If this was a Shooter or something understandable, but a sports game?

Not to mention 2K Sports also does the same thing, for a while, and no huge complaints or backlash there.

Only company that does not do this is EA Sports, but then again, THEY'RE FUCKING EA. They can shove surplus money up a cow's ass. Of course they will keep their sports servers on a little longer, but then again, when they do decide to shut down servers for 3 year old sports games, people lose their shit.

This is common practice for those companies.

Imagine the outrage if MSFT did this. I guess Sony gets a pass since they're "for the gamers". Adam Boyes should release an edit of his smarmy E3 DRM video saying "Here's Sony's DRM policy. Just put in your disc and it works - for a year".
Maybe Sony will take the crown for worst company of the year, since even EA never tried to shut off servers after just one year.

Wow, I was going to get MLB 15 too, but now knowing the server will be cut off after one year, there is ZERO chance I am buying it now. What a dumb decision by Sony/San Diego Studios.

What a scum move... and I don't think Sony does this to save money. It must not cost that much to have servers to allow a few (thousands perhaps?) players to play online. It's more because they want to encourage people to buy the next version. But this can backfire.

This is a d!ck move, no game should have support removed after 1 year. Hope they change their minds here.

This makes me happy that I don't play online, as I enjoy Road to the Show mode too much to even bother with it. That's why I'm still playing The Show 09 on my PS3, and still don't feel a need to upgrade yet.

That is really pathetic. Remember the old days when EA was the bad guy for charging full price for yearly roster updates? Even they never tried anything like this.

<< LINK REMOVED >> YEs, but there is a large difference between a multiplayer only game and a baseball game. Not saying this is right by any means, This is f'd up, but comparing this to Titanfall is kinda far fetched. That and for the first year of Xbox Ones life, MS was hammered for everything they did, whether it was cut the price, change a policy, or smile the wrong way. Now though they are doing great! Really happy with what the Xbox has become!

Better buy "MLB 15: The Show" Day 1; you'll only have 13 months to play online if that's your thing.

I have The Show 14 on the PS4... I think I'll skip the game for a few years - its just too slow and too boring. They won't go full into something like Baseball Mogul for the stat side, yet the gameplay is too slow and the games are much too long to stay interesting. The RTTS is really the only thing worth playing and there's very little new about it. I don't get why making a fun baseball game is so hard. MLB totally screwed up with RBI baseball - what about making a pickup and play arcade baseball title means you have to totally ignore the management style if you wanted to do all that stuff. Oh well no big loss.

I guess Sony needs to take these servers away from MLB so they can use them for Driveclub...that way we'll get the PS+ version finally!

I think Sony needs to invest in more servers. When Xbox One was announced that spent a lot of time talking about how many servers they had lined up but Sony didn't bother, what's up with that?

This is a sure way to drive off potential customers. i like The Show but basically this is turning it into a subscription based game. It would be one thing if the game was $20 or so, but a fully priced release and cancelling support after one year is a ridiculous model. These are the directions we don't need the industry to continue in.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I'm guessing what people would define as a game being double gated. You need the latest version of the game because support of the last year's version was shut off (pretty much an annual subscription fee in that regard; one gate), then you need PS+ for online multiplayer if you're playing on PS4 (the basic subscription fee for online multiplayer, which is the other gate).

What in the hell are people paying $50 a year for on PS+ then? Isn't that $50 to float network costs? So why are we paying for this garbage to float these network costs if you independently shut game networks down?

People are so blind, Sony is the most anti-consumer company in the industry yet people keep soaking up their crap...

Microsoft would never do something like this, this is horrible...

Well wont be buying MLB the show ever again. Which is fine. Every year is just a roster update afterall. Once you buy one copy it wont change for the life of the system.

As much as people complain about EA, at less they keep servers up. You can still play Skate 2 if I'm not mistaken.

And people say pc gaming is elitist... What's more elitist than making online multiplayer a mandatory monthly subscription, AND then turning that off in a game to further force a new purchase.

Seems a little heavy handed is all.

This is disgusting. This is a neon sign screaming the future of video games. You sell a game based on an online feature, then take it away 13 months later. My prediction: When you load up MLB '16 on MLB '17's release day, you'll get a message saying you can no longer play this game (even single player). Insert credit card to "upgrade" to MLB '17. A 75 MB download and $60 later, you're playing MLB '17.
