PS4 Lifetime Sales Top 110 Million, And Digital Sales See A Huge Increase

PlayStation's latest sales figures for their current system have been announced, and the system continues to do well as the PS5 looms.

The PlayStation 4 is the second-best selling Sony console (after the PlayStation 2), and the company's latest earnings report has given the most up-to-date figure on how the console is doing. Although there has been the expected year-on-year decline as the PlayStation 4 nears the end of its life cycle, the console has continued to do well, and has now sold through 110.4 million units over its lifetime.

Daniel Ahmad, a senior analyst at Niko Partners, has compiled data from the latest Sony earnings report to paint a picture of the PS4's sales over the last financial year, ending March 31, 2020. 13.6 million units were sold over the last financial year, down from 17.8 million the previous year. It's expected that sales in the current quarter of the 2020 financial year might actually exceed those from a year ago, as COVID-19 means that people are at home and bored.

245 million units of software were sold over the same period. This is down from 257.6 million the previous year, as is to be expected. This also marks the first time that digital sales have exceeded physical--51% of game sales during the financial year were digital. A whopping 66% of sales in the final quarter of the financial year were digital, which is, again, likely due in part to self-isolation and restrictions that came into effect in March 2020.

Overall, this was a good year for Sony's games and network services--the second best on record, in fact, lagging only behind 2018.

Essentially, despite a slump, the PlayStation 4 is still doing very well. Subscriptions for PlayStation Plus have also gone up, hitting 41.5 million by March 31, 2020 (up from 36.4 million a year earlier).

While COVID-19 has impacted Sony's revenue, their earnings report also says that there are no plans to delay the PlayStation 5, nor its planned software, at this time. We're still not entirely sure what games we'll get on PS5 when it releases, although we know quite a bit else about it.

The PlayStation 4 is now the fourth best-selling console ever, behind the Game Boy/Game Boy Color, which sold 118.69 million units. It remains to be seen if the PlayStation 4 will overtake Nintendo's handheld; the Nintendo DS (154.02 million) and PlayStation 2 (155 million) are likely out of reach.

Comparing handhelds seems a bit odd to me. The switch yes, because it’s a hybrid model , but the others is like comparing apples and oranges .

Either way, 110m is an impressive number. I wonder if MS will show numbers next gen if they improve?

To all the people pushing digital only agenda should take a look at the sales. Physical sales is neck to neck with digital. So you can buy your games all digital but there is a vast majority of people who prefer physical copies. Keep your agenda to yourself.

Microsoft got the Jumpstart on this Console generation with images and information but it’s still waaaaay early. They had a big hiccup with that 30 minute web stream event they did. Really nothing spectacular at all. I agree with @jenovaschild comments. Xbox is never going to have the same sales unless they get some AAA console exclusive. Sony just walks all over them with their list of titles. Another Halo??? Snore....online FPS’S isn’t the console owners priority focus anymore. A lot of us Are all getting Older and our interests have shifted.

I think its funny nintendo combined the sales of gameboy/gameboy color. You can't play gameboy color games on the original gameboy.

Wow that's a lot of mula my brother. With PS5 around the corner I don't think they will over take Game Boy/Game Boy Color, 118.69 million. People are already saving their money for PS5. Plus PS5 is going to be BC with PS4 so why waste your money buying a PS4. According to statista it estimate that Xbox One has sold around 46.9 million units by March 2020. It was not even a close race but Microsoft is going to get another crack at the number one spot and it starts with Xbox Series X late this year. They gonna get another shot at doing things right from the very beginning and put behind all the wrong they did at the beginning of the Xbox One era.

@angrycreep: they will easily take the two handhelds as over the next 5 yrs, they will reduce the cost of the ps4, probably down to the $130-160 area. While this may not sale well here in the states, as it is full saturated, other emerging markets will eat it up. Giving it that extra ten mill. The ps2 sold for a decade after the ps3 came out, as India bought it not only for games but dvd. The ps4 library is massive enough, that Sony will enjoy plenty of back end and still have room for the ps5.

I really hope that xbox diversifies its library, as we really need strong competition going into the 9th gen to ensure game quality, low prices, and more innovation. Xbox singular focus on FPS and tired bro games have really put it into a niche that will be hard to come out of.
