PS4 Genre-Swapping RPG Death End Re;Quest Coming To North America And Europe Next Year

The game arrives in North America and Europe in early 2019.

Idea Factory, the developer of the Hyperdimension Neptunia series, has announced a new title for PS4. During a panel at Anime Expo, the publisher unveiled the genre-changing RPG Death End Re;Quest, which will launch physically and digitally for Sony's console in North America and Europe in 2019.

Death End Re;Quest tells the story of video game programmer Arata Mizunashi and his colleague, Shina Ninomiya. Following Shina's mysterious disappearance, Arata discovers that she's actually trapped in an MMORPG they developed together called World's Odyssey, and the only way for her to escape is to complete the game and unlock its perfect ending--a feat that only has a 1% success rate.

Players will need to jump between the real and virtual worlds in Death End in order to unravel the mystery of World's Odyssey and help Shina escape. The game features a turn-based battle system, but it's most distinctive feature is the ability to change the game into a completely different genre during battle, such as a first-person shooter or a fighting game. Players will need to switch between different genres to gain an advantage over enemies and bosses.

Additionally, players will be able to utilize "Bug Skills" while exploring dungeons to discover otherwise inaccessible areas and bypass certain environmental obstacles, such as gliding over a pit of lava. Players will also be able to summon some of the bosses they've previously defeated into battle to help take on even more challenging foes.

Idea Factory hasn't pinned down an exact release date for Death End Re;Quest yet, but the game is slated to arrive early next year. In the meantime, you can watch its announcement trailer and check out a handful of screenshots from the title above.

This seems to have potential.

It really has been too long since a classic multi-genre game was made.

The old 80s "Tron" arcade game probably still sets the multi-genre standard.

I've been sinking more time into these budget jrpg's they really have some unique charm to them. Shining Resonance Refrain is out on the 10th if anyone is looking for one to play btw.

I’m truly jealous of ppl that can enjoy turn-based games…I dig it from an artistic point of view since I’m a big anime whore, but thats where it ends for me.

@tingtong: Maybe I just skimmed the article too quickly, but I thought that the whole point was that it switches to other action game types during battle instead of standard turn-based fighting.

@NaturallyEvil: I just stopped reading at turn-based lol, but now I worry its just gonna be 3 half-assed genre’s instead of 1 fine-tuned experience so idk.. shall wait on reviews!

Hey ya...14yo looking girls jumping around almost naked...doubt this game will launch in the west as it is shown in the trailer.

On the plus side there are the turn based combat and the plot between the real world and the cyber reality(not really new, several other games did that before).

The negative, which makes this game for me a no go,are the sexualized underage looking female characters.

Hard to believe that there is still no big audience for mature looking characters in games in Japan.

@sladakrobot: I'm more bothered by the game's shitty art style, than by its sexual depiction of minors. That said, it's a JRPG, aimed at mainstream Japanese culture. So, we all know it's going to suck from a mechanical standpoint. These things are the Call Of Duties and Assassin's Creeds of the Orient.

@asnakeneverdies: Actually, CoD sold more in japan than most jrpg. WWII sold about 170k physically first week in japan and cumulative total of 400k. Well more than the usual 100k mark of jrpgs. even persona 5 with all that hype only about 600k physically.

@sakaixx: Well, there's more JRPG saturation in Japan, so that's not surprising. However, you misconstrue the intent of my comparison by bringing forth sales numbers, Sakai.

@sladakrobot: You have the ability to CHANGE THE GENRE OF THE GAME as a means to overcome the game's challenges, which I've never seen done before...

...but all you care about is the girls. Yeesh. This is why generic mainstream games are dominating the industry.

@Barighm: yeah...i care for the character i play and see 95% of the time on my screen...and i dont like to control a loli character which shows at times more skin than Bayonetta.

And as i mentioned, different genres in a game is nothing new to me as i played few of them.

@sladakrobot: Hi, get your point about the depiction of female characters completely. Not trying to be funny, but what other genre switching games have you played? Just curious what other games have done this that didn’t notice before now. Thanks.

@annettebomb: You're not talking about genreswitching, but mechanicalswapping specifically. The former is common, and there are instances of the latter in games like Spore and Brütal Legend. However, there aren't many examples that implement such considerations within the core loop. That's what could be construed as the enthralling component of this offering, Annette.

I hope the premise leads to interesting gameplay. I remember being excited for the first Neptune game (based on the premise), and was sorely disappointed that it turned out to be a middling turn-based JRPG with humor that did nothing for me.

THIs looks like a game to get hyped for. Super intriguing ideas, I’ll purchase it just for their attempt to be a bit different. The more we support companies taking risks the more new games with a unique edge were likely to see. Really looking forward to seeing more, love the idea of changing battle genres :D
