Now Playing: Free PS4/PS3/Vita PlayStation Plus Games For April 2018 Revealed

With April approaching, Sony has announced the lineup of games that PlayStation Plus members will be able to download for free during the month. A total of six games are on the way, split across PS4, PS3, and Vita, and this is the rare month where we won't have to wait too far into the month to begin downloading them.

As is usually the case, PS4 is where the real highlights are. TrackMania Turbo, the high-octane racing game from Ubisoft, will be free during the month; notably, it also includes a nice PSVR mode for those with the necessary hardware. It'll be joined by Mad Max, the video game adaptation of the post-apocalyptic franchise (though it bears no direct ties to the excellent Fury Road).

Also during April, PS3 owners will be able to download In Space We Brawl and Toy Home. Vita owners get 99 Vidas and Q-Bert Rebooted, the latter of which supports Cross-Buy with PS4 and PS3. That means owners of those two consoles will have a total of three free games to claim during April.

All of these will be available for download starting on the first Tuesday of the month, April 3. It's not too late to still download March's excellent free PS Plus games, which include Bloodborne and Ratchet & Clank. Adding these to your library allows you to download and play them for as long as you remain a subscriber, so you should be sure to add them before April's freebies arrive.

Pretty good month. Trackmania Turbo and Mad Max are games I'd like to play that I probably never would have bought.

Gamestop will give you $6 for Mad Max so this month PS plus is giving you Mad Max and $6. Last month I got Bloodborne and $8.

@gwalcott: That's some strange logic there...but, whatever helps you justify your PS+ subscription is fine with me.

OMG BBQ Rolf Harris what another crappy month.

Obviously I'm taking the piss out of all the negative people complaining because almost every month seems to have a good selection which is surprising.

I'm actually considering getting the PS4 Pro God of War bundle. I saw Gamestop gives $170 trade in for a PS4 500GB (but I have a 2 TB upgrade in mine) and you get the game for free. So it's a limited edition console with basically $230 off (including the game I was already going to buy).

Just don't know if the Pro is worth it because it can't really do 4K games and the original PS4 can do HDR.

@Vodoo: Same situation as you except have 1TB in my ps4, don't understand your last sentence though. The pro is worth it if you have a 4ktv. And pro does supports HDR, which the 4ktv is supposed to have.

Avatar image for Vodoo

@thageorgian: I know the Pro does HDR, but I was saying the original PS4 is capable of HDR now on certain games, like HZD. And being the Pro doesn't do native 4K on games, and the tv up scales it to 4K anyway, makes it a more difficult decision.

Also, early 4K tv's, like the first 1-3 years they were out, don't have HDR, just 4K. They're capable of higher frames and brightness because there's no HDR, but then... there's no HDR. For example, I have a 65" 240Hz 4K tv without HDR because it wasn't available.

@Vodoo: PS4 Pro owner here. Playing at 4K and HDR is a huge difference albeit native 4K still a step above. TV upscaling from 1080 to 4K means you are losing image quality. However, in my opinion, there is no rush to get the Pro now if you are not so eager to have the best quality a PS4 can output.

Nice. Always wanted to try Mad Max, still playing Ratchet & Clank, very fun game.

Mad Max was pretty good. I never finished it cause it's a big ass open world game that came out when there were other, better big ass open world games available. But that doesn't make it bad.

It's not for everyone, but if you're looking to kill time in a post-apocalyptic setting with decent Arkham-esque combat and fairly deep crafting/vehicle customization, then you'll absolutely love it.

Avatar image for vigariox

@jesterofbass: Actually not so long if you focus on the main missions which is exactly what I did after getting tired of the repetitiveness. Took me 35 hours to do almost all sub missions and all main missions. Good game though, they did a lot right.

Nice! Always wanted to try Mad Max. Like a mini-Rage.

Don't even bother with that Q-Bert update... Does NOT control well.

Avatar image for zmanbarzel
ZmanBarzel

@Pyrosa: Yeah, no home version of “Q-Bert” has ever controlled well. I played an actual arcade cabinet version of it last year or the year before, and realized why it will always play so much better: the joystick itself — including the switches — are rotated 45 degrees from the standard X- and Y-axes. On a home controller, moving diagonally is a secondary functionality, behind measuring up/down and left/right, and will feel relatively unresponsive.

Avatar image for NTM23

@Pyrosa: There are some solid (albeit unoriginal) ideas in Mad Max, but the game becomes super monotonous I ended up not being able to finish it. More variety and a slightly more intriguing story would have gone a long way I think. Also, it's kind of a shame Max isn't known to use a wide variety of guns because the game could have turned out to be a decent shooter if they implemented it. It's an okay Arkham-esque brawler. The driving is okay. It's one of those games I wish I would go through, but the last couple of times attempting it, I became more and more bored with it.

I don't know how many hours I put into it, but I covered all of the map and did many of the side quests and a lot of the story. And, I'm not sure what you mean by mini-Rage; Mad Max has a much bigger environment, although it's singular rather than split into two. Rage exceeded at allowing you to shoot dudes. It kind of disappointed in regards to characters and story too. The only thing Mad Max and Rage have in common is the look of enemy A.I. to some degree and the desert environment.

Same Trash as usual. But hey, it's free*.

*You already paid for it through your PS+ subscription.

Avatar image for livedreamplay

@Atzenkiller: One man's trash is another man's treasure. And even if you think of them as not being free, under $1/game is a pretty damn good deal.

Avatar image for Atzenkiller

@livedreamplay: Looking at it like that having an extra $ per month to spend on things you care about seems preferable over throwing it out the window.

Do you always let people talk you into buying any crap they wanna sell you? Cause that's what you're doing here. I doubt you'd ever play 99% of the crap that we get with PS+ if you hadn't already payed for it involuntarily. But then I don't know you and you might actually be the kind of person that's spending money on all these shitty throwaway games. Someone has to obviously or they wouldn't exist.

Avatar image for otterbee

@Atzenkiller: If you're trying to justify the value of a $60/year sub, and genuinely concerned about "having an extra $ per month to spend on things you care about" you should really reconsider your hobbies. Because, spending money on gaming doesn't sound like something you should be doing.

Avatar image for Atzenkiller

@otterbee: Good thing you didn't read the comment I was replying to.

Avatar image for CyberEarth

@Atzenkiller: I wish the discounts were steeper for PS+ (like they used to be). It's rare that I find a title I want with a discount, and even rarer if that discount is over $2.

As for the multiplayer, Sony just held everyone hostage on that for PS4 because Microsoft did it for 360. Still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Avatar image for Atzenkiller
Atzenkiller

@CyberEarth: Hasn't Xbox Live been around and mandatory for anything related to online since the first Xbox? But yeah, why bother reducing prices for folks with PS+ if it's pretty much mandatory anyway? Not like they need to entice you further to subscribe to it.

Avatar image for scottyp360
scottyp360

@Atzenkiller: You have a point if you are talking about people getting PS+ strictly for the "free" games. But I would think most people utilize PS+ for multiple purposes (free games, online gaming, online storage, extra discounts, etc) making the money spent well worth it.

Avatar image for Atzenkiller
Atzenkiller

@scottyp360: Most people, and I'm guessing here the number is close to 99%, are probably paying for it only because it's mandatory. If you really think that anyone really cares about these free games and thinks that it's "money well spent", then why not suggest to Sony to get rid of the PS+ requirement for online play and see how many people will still keep paying for it?

Of course we all know that will never happen. Mandatory fees for online play are just too big of a cash cow.

Sony could have kept online free and used that as an argument for their console, maybe even forcing MS to get rid of their online fees in the process, considering that the current Xbox is already selling much less than the PS4. But what's the point in that if you're already ahead and can make tons of money by adopting the same model?

Avatar image for scottyp360

@Atzenkiller: " If you really think that anyone really cares about these free games and thinks that it's "money well spent", then why not suggest to Sony to get rid of the PS+ requirement for online play and see how many people will still keep paying for it?"

But you are the one complaining about the quality of the games that are offered.....

The value or worth of the membership boils down to how much you utilize the features offered by the subscription. You claim in another post that you feel like you are being ripped off and, based on your comments, your reasoning seems to be based on the "free" games.

So I ask why is it that you are paying for the service? Are you paying mainly to play online? Do you pay hoping for quality "free" games? Do you utilize the extra discounts on sales? The main reason for getting the membership should be playing online first and foremost. If you don't utilize that component of the subscription then you are basically ripping yourself off for paying for something that you don't use.

@Atzenkiller: Are you that kind of dumb person that thinks that because he doesn't like something, no one should?

I sometimes like to try out indie titles that I would otherwise miss, and I sometimes get bigger games that I haven't bought when they came out. In this case, I've played mad max a while ago so it's not to my interest, however last month I got to play Ratchet and Clank. A few months ago, I played Batman. A few months before that I played Metal Gear Solid 5. Overall I get much more than the $60 I spend yearly.

If that's too much to wrap you're head around then continue your moronic rant, if you've managed to get it, good on you.

Avatar image for Atzenkiller
Atzenkiller

@livedreamplay: Are you that kind of dumb that you think anyone cares about the trash you play? Feel free to pay my PS+ fees if you enjoy those shitty games that much. Any decent games like MGS5 I usually already got long before they become a PS+ title anyway so nothing gained there either. Not to mention that MGS5 has been really cheap for a long time now

But since you enjoy them it's perfectly fine if everyone else has to pay for it as well. **** them, at least you like it.

Avatar image for livedreamplay
LiveDreamPlay

@Atzenkiller: Hey moron, I wasn't giving those examples to get your validation, no one cares which games you think are trash and which games you own. I was giving those examples because you seemed to be too dumb to understand the value of the subscription for some people other than yourself. If you still didn't get it, I feel even more sorry for you.

Avatar image for Atzenkiller
Atzenkiller

@livedreamplay: Man, you really are a dumb ****. Let me spell it out for you so it might get through your skull: you're free to enjoy whatever the **** you want, as long as it doesn't affect other people. If I have to pay for shitty indie games that I'm never gonna touch anyway then yes, I'm feeling ripped off. That you feel differently about it is of no concern to anyone because it doesn't change anything about the fact that I and many others getting ripped off.

Maybe if you stopped focussing solely on yourself you might be able to see this, but you really don't seem like the kind of person who ever does that. As long as you're happy everyone else should be, too, huh?

Avatar image for livedreamplay
LiveDreamPlay

@Atzenkiller: You're that big of an idiot that you're focusing your entire moronic argument on yourself and then you're telling me that I shouldn't focus solely on myself? Damn, you're clueless.

Let me rephrase cause you seem to be the next level kind of dumb. It's very simple so focus. You like what the subscription is offering, you buy it. You don't like what the subscription is offering, you don't buy it. Did you manage to grasp that? Or are you too dumb for that too.

Not everyone has to align with your shitty taste in games and/or previous game purchases, you can always choose to not buy the subscription if you feel that you're being "ripped off".
