Now Playing: Fortnite Cross-Play Live On PS4, Alongside New Season 6 Teaser - GS News Update

Sony has announced that cross-play between PlayStation 4 and other platforms is coming to Fortnite. In a statement posted on the PlayStation Blog, Sony Interactive Entertainment said it has "identified a path towards supporting cross-platform features for select third-party content." The first of these third-party titles is Fortnite, and an open beta has begun that allows for "gameplay, progression, and commerce" across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, Mac, Android, iOS.

"We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community's continued patience as we have navigated through this issue to find a solution," said John Kodera, president of Sony Interactive Entertainment. "We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective."

As previously mentioned, in addition to enabling players across the various platforms Fortnite is available on to play together, progress will be preserved over the different platforms and, more importantly, any purchases and unlocks will also be shared, which is good news for dedicated Fortnite players.

"For 24 years, we have strived to deliver the best gaming experience to our fans by providing a uniquely PlayStation perspective," Sony's statement continues. "Today, the communities around some games have evolved to the point where cross-platform experiences add significant value to players. In recognition of this, we have completed a thorough analysis of the business mechanics required to ensure that the PlayStation experience for our users remains intact today, and in the future, as we look to open up the platform."

It also notes that this "represents a major policy change" and Sony has said it is "now in the planning process across the organization to support this change." Further details will be provided on specifics regarding the beta timeframe, and what this means for other titles in the future. In the meantime, cross-play in Fortnite on PS4 is live.

The subject of cross-play on PlayStation 4 has been a sore issue for the last few months, especially as the popularity of Fortnite has skyrocketed and other platforms have enabled the functionality. In the past, Sony remained bullish on maintaining a closed online environment. Sony's CEO, Kenichiro Yoshida, for example said the PlayStation 4 was simply the best place to play, suggesting that there was no need for PS4 owners to connect with players on other platforms.

This stance drew criticism from other high-profile people in the video game industry, most notably from Xbox boss Phil Spencer and corporate vice president of Xbox, Mike Ybarra, who said Sony "still isn't listening to gamers" about the cross-play situation.

Tim Sweeney, the head of Fortnite developer Epic Games, later said that he believes it is in the industry's best interest to allow gamers on competing platforms to play together, and added that he believes cross-play is "inevitable." With Sony now on board, Sweeney has been proven right.

The cross-play beta arrives on PS4 in time for the start of Fortnite Season 6, which has begun on all platforms.

While I think it's great that Sony has removed this respective stick from their ass, cross-play on PS4 will most likely not be a usual thing. It just so happens that Fortnite is a huge market. I'm actually surprised they didn't limit it to just mobile crossplay.

The funny thing is that Nintendo, who is tighter than a bullfrog's ass, beat Sony in getting crossplay available and Nintendo can barely operate an online system, lol.

Hopefully this will evolve to having crossplay on all 3rd party multiplayer games, though not likely for some time.

Hell, I still am unable to merge two separate Uplay accounts (one on PS4, one on Xbox) because Ubisoft can't, or won't, do it. I couldn't remember the login credentials when signing up on the 2nd console, but figured Ubi would be able to merge them no problem. I figured wrong.

It actually pain me to see kiddos there going like : "I'm so sad that PS4 is helping the loser."

Like seriously, i thought the 90's console war was over. What are you fighting for anymway ? PS4 and XBOX ONE have more or so the same capabilities.

I'm personally VERY HAPPY that i will be able to play with my friends, no matter what platform they are on. This kind of elitism is the reason why the console market was so backward for so long.

Who cares. Fortnite sucks anyway. The good thing is this paves the way for BETTER games in the future for cross play.

I'm glad sony caved in. Its a good thing that players can game together no matter what platform they are on.

@Chipp:

...Wouldn't exactly say they caved as if i wouldn't have known better, i'd think it's more like some sorta strategy they're doing as a means to an end....they kept away from the idea this long for a strategic, particular reason and it's the same thing i feel they're doing right here with this move now again....just my take really...

@Viral-venom13: I could be wrong, but with Minecraft for instance, Sony got a lot of flak for not allowing cross play, but MS required a Live login even for those PS4 users. Which would completely make sense why Sony wouldn't want that. Would be like feeding the competition.

On a side note why Ubisoft can have a reward system through Uplay thats applicable to any console and Epic games can seemingly not is not Sony's fault.

Glad they found a way because so many people were crying about it, but if I were Sony I would've taken my time to ensure the integrity of my brand as well. It was a lose lose situation for them for a while there. Curious how they made it work.

@Viral-venom13: it has to do with money. They didn't want all those little kids asking for pcs and xbox, for Christmas,just to cross play fortnite with their switch.

They only make decisions based on money.

wow so now that cross play is a thing across all devices now its only xbox players who have to pay their monthly fee to play the game. good one microsoft

Avatar image for luis2113
luis2113

@s7eventhheaven: Microsoft also has the fastest gaming network with half the lag than psn. Back when I was only on ps4 I would've paid 20 bucks a month in order to have the speed that xbox live has. Plus Microsoft has platforms where you can play online for free. It's not like they dont offer that.

@luis2113: Live always seemed more efficient than PSN to me... yet Live was guilty of telling me something was wrong with my connection or the problem was on my end only to find out a day or two later it was in fact the MS servers tweaking...

Still think Sony could learn a thing or two about Microsofts store, UI, and functionality. I blame it on a cultural difference, but what do I know?

@s7eventhheaven: What are you going on about? You have to pay to play online on a Switch and ps4 too.

Avatar image for ps3gamer1234
ps3gamer1234

@Sevenizz: Fortnite is free to play, so on the PS4 no PSN PLUS is needed to play online.

Avatar image for luis2113

@ps3gamer1234: good luck playing rdr2 or bo4 for free.

So on the ps4, psn is needed to play online...99 percent of the time.

@ps3gamer1234: And Switch?

@ps3gamer1234: So if you only play this game, no need to pay for PSN PLUS ever.

@berrlett: xb1 and ps4 vids are fine but nintendo dont allow footage of their games on you tube without permission and even then nintendo themselves monitise their properties included in your videos.

@s7eventhheaven:

yeah so I noticed, but I can actually share as I got their Permission for WiiU (only short vids as gameplay footage) the issue is I have the software and all but still don't know how to record proper good vids :( Thanks for the input.

Well it's a start. Hopefully this will lead to a positive trend. It doesn't make sense to have barriers in this day and age. People should be free to play with their friends across all platforms.

@Jaxith: Totally agree... yet it also doesn't make sense to open up borders too fast. Hostile take overs and deception happen way too much nowadays.

Nooooo !!!!!

Why Sony Why team up with a LOSER ? ! ?

Avatar image for luis2113
luis2113

@Terminator95: because xbox fortnite players in North America out number ps4 fortnite players in North America.

Sales are so close in NA that if they dont team up the bad rep may lead to another loss in NA. Losing America 2 generations in a row would be bad.

Plus they aren't teaming up with anyone. It's just a feature. When the xbox decided to add the 4k blue ray feature they didn't team up with sony.

It's just a feature that is literally the standard in the gaming industry.

Sony is just late to the party after getting there a day too early.

@luis2113: "because xbox fortnite players in North America out number ps4 fortnite players in North America."

Probably because Sony has so many better games to play

Avatar image for Terminator95

@luis2113: Correct me if i'm wrong !

Hasn't SONY PLAYSTATION 4 in consoles sold, Out sell Xbox one X By a lot in North America ? !

One little stupid cartoon game is NOT going to hurt Sony, by teaming up with Xbox cross play.

Like I said before this is a ONE OFF, to Keep the Xbox fan boys from crying over about cross play.
