PS4 Continues To Enjoy Great Success; Spider-Man Up To 9 Million Sold

91.6 million and counting.

Sony has provided a new sales update for the PlayStation 4, and things are going quite well, it seems. The console has sold 91.6 million units worldwide as of December 31, which includes 5.6 million units sold during the holiday season (which Sony tracks as November 19-December 31).

Additionally, Sony announced that Spider-Man for PS4 has sold 9 million copies physically and digitally as of November 25. The Insomniac-developed PS4 exclusive launched in September, selling 3.3 million copies in its first three days to set a new sales record. The new sales figure most likely also counts copies sold in the Spider-Man PS4 bundle, which no doubt was very popular during Black Friday when it was selling for only $200 USD.

Another big figure was 50.7 million, which is the number of PS4 games (physical and digital) that were sold during the holiday season. This boosts the total number of PS4 games sold globally since the console launched in 2013 up to 876 million across physical and digital as of December 31.

Sony also announced that the PlayStation Network had 90 million monthly "active" users as of the end of November 2018.

"I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our passionate community around the globe, and our partners, for helping us achieve these milestones," Sony Interactive Entertainment president John Kodera said in a statement.

"This year, we will bring more enhanced experiences to our fans along with a highly anticipated lineup of games that are only possible on PS4. As we look toward the next PS4 milestone, SIE will continue to evolve, and we will further expand the platform to deliver the best interactive entertainment experiences to the world."

The PS4 is doing extremely well in the market, but it still has a lot of work to do to match the sales of the PlayStation 2. That console sold more than 150 million units.

Back in May 2018, Sony said the PlayStation 4 was entering the end of its lifecycle. In October, the company for the first time acknowledged it might make a PlayStation 5.

There are a number of exciting PlayStation 4-exclusive games in the works, including Death Stranding from Hideo Kojima and The Last of Us: Part II from Naughty Dog.

Spiderman was my favorite game of 2019, (followed closely by God of War & new Forza Horizon).

So it's gonna overtake the original PS. Not sure if it's gonna catch up to the PS2 though. However, the latter had an advantage of being a super cheap DVD-player, which a lot of people bought only for that.

I want to know how much PSVR sold, I keep seeing people going for those bundles. Every time I went to a GameStop or best buy or Walmart or target there were people either walking out with them or looking for them.

@girlusocrazy: Last announcement was 2 million at the start of 2018 so maybe 4 million??? It's definitely a bit of a niche but I even bought one myself over Black Friday I think Sony is keeping VR alive at this point with some pretty awesome games.

Edit: It actually hit 3 million in August 2018*

@gamingdevil800: It's definitely got a lot of potential, I'm sure anyone who tries any of the top games will be immediately sold. I just hear more people talking about it and see more people buying it. It'll be exciting to see what happens next.

I'm glad they are staying behind it and supporting it.

@girlusocrazy: Yeah I fully expect a PSVR2 or whatever it will be called at some point during the next console generation hopefully it will be wireless too. I reckon the success hinges a lot on software sales like when I bought my PSVR I did end up buying 7 or so games. Plus there have been some good stand out hits like astro bot rescue and beat saber this year.

@gamingdevil800: I kinda prefer the wires, I don't want a battery pack blowing up in my face!

Yeah I dug into some sales for software and immediately bought a bunch of games, and I'm planning on getting more once I've chewed through these.

I plan on playing in VR as long as they keep the content coming.

I'd buy a PSVR2. I'd love something higher resolution, though I understand why they made PSVR 1080p, the OG PS4 still has to push out 90+ frames/sec for VR so forget 4k. That said hopefully they still allow people to use the original on the PS5 while we save up for that new one, and it would let some cheaper used PSVRs to get into the hands of people who want to dip a toe without a big investment.

As much as I've enjoyed this generation, it makes me miss the PS1 and earlier than that even with the SNES and the Genesis. Games were so much more endearing back then. Realistic graphics has kind of sapped the charm from modern games.

@srfilk86: I wrote an article a while back where I reflected whether this feeling you're describing is in fact because games have lost some charm or because we simply get nostalgic about the past and specially about our childhood.

I think it is the latter, and that's actually something easy to verify: just play a few games from the past; games you have fond memories of. You'll quickly realize they don't really hold up. I mean, I had a blast replaying Golden Axe for example, but the feeling fades as quickly as those games used to last. They were great games back then, but when you switch from Golden Axe to God of War you realize we've come a long way.

@gfantini: This isn't true, though. I play games like Turrican and Metroid and Earthbound and Chrono Trigger to this day. All are still better than 90% of modern titles.

@gfantini: I find myself going back to the classics more and more as I age. Modern games are technically solid, some are artistically pleasing but they all start blending together. Good classics, the art is in the play. SNES Nintendo classics for example are still best-of-class.

@chippiez: Genesis had some great games too. X-Men 2 and Mega Turrican are timeless classics.

@superklyph: To be fair the PS2 had much more time on the market, and was purchased for use as a DVD player by some (although I wonder how much percentage wise that even is)

@girlusocrazy: Well, it was one of the cheapest DVD players at that time and came with a god damn game console. I'm sure that quite a few million were bought just because of the DVD player.

At this rate, it will surpass Wii's and PS1's numbers in a year. That's pretty spectacular.

@USDevilDog: Crazy that some were predicting this generation of consoles would flop, even game publishers weren't ready at launch because they doubted the desire for new consoles, how casuals would just use mobiles for gaming, how there were more entertainment options and people wouldn't want consoles. Even MS positioned their console as an entertainment device first and foremost. Input One, exclusive TV series and movies, interactive entertainment, Quantum Break and Loco Cycle are games AND TV shows.

Turns out people who grew up with consoles still want consoles, well tuned plug and play experiences are still valuable, and that specially crafted first/second party games can still draw in crowds.

@girlusocrazy: Very true. Two of my nieces (ages 8 and 11) both wanted either a Switch or PS4 for Christmas. I ended up getting them a Switch. I received some cool uncle points for that. The girls both game on their tablets and phones, but they still wanted a console. As it turns out, these mobile devices aren't substitutes to consoles or a gaming PC as some analysts wrongly predicted. Instead, they are supplementary gaming devices.

And like @olddadgamer mentioned, console gaming is an experience I would like the younger generation to have. It's a very immediate and social experience gathering around the TV to game, even when it's a single player game.

@girlusocrazy: People who grew up with consoles still want consoles....and their kids do, too. My kids just played spiderman on my launch PS4 (I splurged on a pro) and now they're part of a large generation who, like us, will associate consoles with games and games with consoles, which should guarantee that consoles will be around for a long, LONG time.

And I, for one, am very happy about that.

@olddadgamer: Yup! My kid started on tablets because he couldn't get the hang of navigating with a controller, even when we started him on simple classics and even with game genie codes.

But then he got into the Lego games which really caught his attention because of the various movies and toys he already enjoyed, and now prefers that to tablets, even though he has Lego games on his tablets too.

There's something that's tied to the power and spectacle of a console game, and the controls that a gamepad allows, that aren't matched on other devices. Even the 3DS games don't live up to what they can do, and there's no split screen multiplayer like on console.

The social aspect of viewing the same thing on the couch and being able to cooperate on the same screen, the wow factor, and the quality of gameplay keep us preferring that format.

@girlusocrazy: Amen, dude. And they've figured that out. I mean, they don't even say ipads are for games. They associate ipads with netflix and stuff, but I haven't seen my kids play a game on an ipad in forever, unless you count the reading game my kindergartener got from school, which, frankly, turns my older kids off of tablet games even more.

And I'm with you on split screen. Now that they're getting to the age where they can play stuff together, that's it. Consoles all the way. And hooray!
