Now Playing: Sony Won't Have An E3 2019 Press Conference - GS News Update

PlayStation 4 is celebrating its fifth anniversary today, November 15, and to mark the occasion Sony has shared some notable stats and thoughts from some game developers. Those include some new sales data among light-hearted points about popular controllers.

An infographic on the PlayStation Blog tells the story. The PS4 has sold 86.1 million hardware units, along with 777.9 million software units. The system has also received 11 major software updates amid countless smaller "stability updates." The data also shares some popular games, but lists them alphabetically rather than ranking them against each other.

Best-Selling Games:

Most Popular Games:

Most Downloaded Games:

In terms of hardware, the top DualShock color schemes are flat black, blue, red, white, and camo. Finally, the rarest PS4 is the PS4 Pro 500 Million Units Edition, which was limited to just 50,000. Sony also announced a brand-new PS4 bundle, which includes Black Ops 4.

Sony also released a lengthy blog featuring favorite games of top developers from studios like Guerrilla, Insomniac, Sony Bend, and Naughty Dog. Lots of PlayStation 4 exclusives like God of War and Horizon: Zero Dawn were named as standouts from fellow developers, along with a healthy selection of third-party and indies like Red Dead Redemption 2, Bloodborne, and Inside.

Those lists kinda show how light this generation has been on must have exclusives. The difference between a PS4 and an Xbox One is just a handful of games you might not even have enough time to play because of all the great multiplatform releases.

I've had both systems for most of this generation, but since I haven't touched my PlayStation in over 6 months, and everything I play on Xbox is multiplatform, I think I'm going to consolidate down to just an Xbox One X. The only two things I know I'll miss are maybe replaying God of War one day, and the Medieval remake next year.

@Mogan: a handful? You haven't been paying attention much. Lasy yr alone i played about 15. But do get the X also

@Mogan: Great multiplatform releases? Like what? Fallout 76 and your yearly installment of Assassin's Creed/Call of Duty/Battlefield?

If it weren't for Nintendo and Sony exclusives, alongside a FEW great multiplatform ones like Divinity OS II, Nier Automata and Red Dead Redemption 2, I'd have nothing interesting to play this gen.

@Berserk8989: That's an ads backwards way of looking at it, seeing as the ps4 is DOMINATING. Casuals buy the cods and fortnites, which helps sales of course. Exclusives sell consoles to the less casual (hardcore) and casuals. You need both for a successful console, ps4 is perfect proof of that.

@Berserk8989: That’s a shame. I’m rolling in sweet multi platform games over here.

Utterly bizarre that none of the top games are the exclusives....

Well popularity is usually inversely proportional to quality&intelligence.

@Pyrosa: Same reason why everyone lines up to see Transformers + Fast and Furious.

Interesting that the most popular / best selling / most downloaded games have absolutely nothing in common with any of the developer picks on the linked blog article. Says a lot about the player base when the games that the developers list as being their highlights for the console have no crossover with popularity. Not entirely surprising, but it's a little sad, and shows the mentality companies like EA have picked up on when they decide to stop making decent games and just churn out the same product with a slightly different gloss every year.

Avatar image for Pyrosa

@Hak: Agreed. My PS4 is only for stellar exclusives.

Case in point: Journey is perhaps the most memorable, impacting game I played on PS3. (OMFG those weren't NPCs?!?), and Fat Princess is STILL actively played by my kids. Demon's Souls is the reason I have one at all.

All were highly loved, but very unpopular games.

Now we know who's been playing Fortnight and buying GTA V so much! Damn PS owners 😋.

Avatar image for Tidus1012

So the best selling and most popular are trash games except for GTAV, yeah, seems legit.

Avatar image for Berserk8989

@Tidus1012: GTA V is great, yes. But GTA Online is trash. And you have to acknowledge that GTA V is still in the best selling list because of the trash online component most likely.

Mafia 3 is one of the top downloaded games?

Avatar image for GTR12

@olddadgamer: No, GS makes mistakes all the time and omits vital words which is for clickbait.

It should say: Most Downloaded PlayStation Plus Games

Mafia 3 was a good game, and the previous 3 months had very lacklustre games released, so people needed something to play. This data is a bit skewed as it relies on previous months' lack of releases.

@GTR12: I know it has the "+" symbol between certain words, but was that Call of Duty ever a Plus game? Or Mafia 3? I've has Plus since before PS4 and don't remember ever getting them. I could be wrong and may have just added them to my library without downloading. It is confusing how it's listed on the blog. By looking at it I just thought they threw a symbol in there for the hell of it. You may be right though.

@Vodoo: The GS list is just wrong, its got so many mistakes. Click the PS blog link for the actual stats.

BLOPS 4 was the best selling, not 3.

The numbers are WRONG, its not the best, its just listed alphabetically (check the blog, it says so)

BLOPS 3 was given free during e3, there was even tons of ads saying its free, no wonder its on the list.

Mafia 3 was free for PS+

Avatar image for gusbr

@GTR12: aside from the ridiculous AI, mafia 3 is pretty nice.

Avatar image for Vodoo

@gusbr: Eh... I definitely liked the 2nd one much better. Mafia 3 was a drag that I had to literally force myself to finish. I invested so much time that I just kept wanting it to be over. Felt like an uninteresting, slooow paced GTA game. The opening was great though. I think a lot of reviews got it right with this game. Far from the quality of the last one.

Avatar image for gusbr

actually, besides the dumb AI the driving mechanics sucked too. sure mafia 2 was waaaaay better!

And still nothing about the censorship power trip Sony has been on for the past couple of months.
