PS4 augmented reality experiments demoed by Sony

Sony releases new videos showing off the AR tech it's developing.

Between Oculus Rift and Sony's own Project Morpheus, the big craze of late has been virtual reality. In addition to VR, Sony has been working with augmented reality technology for several years now, and today it released new videos of PlayStation 4 tech demos showing what it's been up to.

On PlayStation's Japanese website (as spotted by NeoGAF), two videos were released to show off the AR lighting technology it's developed which presumably makes use of the PlayStation 4 camera. The first of these shows a man holding up two squares with pictures on them that cause box-shaped fishbowls, of sorts, to appear on-screen. He proceeds to "pour" the water (and accompanying rubber duck--Sony loves its rubber duck tech demos) from one into the other before pouring it onto the ground.

The other video shows a person moving a flashlight back and forth over a dinosaur and then Japanese character Hatsune Miku. This creates a shadow on the on-screen floor that moves based on the position of the light and the character.

Lastly, shown only in the form of a single screenshot was PS4 "trading card recognition" technology reminiscent of the PlayStation 3 game The Eye of Judgment, albeit with Hatsune Miku in place of monsters.

Sony is not the only company exploring augmented reality tech. In 2012, it was rumored that Microsoft was developing augmented-reality glasses, known as "Fortaleza," for release in 2014 on the Xbox One. Meanwhile, former Valve employees raised more than $1 million on Kickstarter last year for their augmented reality system castAR.

Sony, like Microsoft, has not made any formal announcements regarding plans to release any augmented reality gaming technology, meaning we may never see any of this put to use.

Does augmented reality technology interest you more than virtual reality? Let us know your preference in the comments below.

it looks cool but its not mind blowing. AR and VR still have long way to go.. maybe in 10 years it will be where it need to be but right now this is the age of beta for this generation.

Both AR and VR seem kind of gimmicky in their current states of prototype. They'd be fun to do occasionally but it's hard to sustain gameplay that way.

I think gamers made it abundantly clear, through the last generation and the current one, that they still prefer the classic gamepad and screen.

That being said, it would be really annoying to turn you head just to look sideways in the game. Imagine doing that in a game like Deadspace. Sprains everyday.

CastAR looks like the only real compelling AR technology being displayed. I've never liked the idea of capturing the environment and then displaying it on the screen. AR only makes sense when the graphics are overlaid on the actual environment.

i guess my daughter would have fun playing with this... i just dont see major game devs to put this into real use in "normal" games... but you never know what the future brings... but for now i have no reason to buy the camera for my ps4...

With any new tech confusion among the masses is a normal thing. I see a lot of promise with ar and headsets but not with standard tv viewing as it is now though. I say keep up the work sony you may be on to something here just don't rush it let it cook for awhile.

I didn't see anything there that had to do with what OCULUS is doing. We already don't really care for the Kinect so why show us what the eye can do? I'm pretty sure the OCULUS will destroy this thing.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I'm sure now you have made this comment Sony will miraculously get it's studios to create AAA titles that take years to make much quicker just to please you. Seriously, surely you could have read up on the release schedule for PS4 titles before you bought one. If you don't think there are enough games to play between the retail releases and all the free PS+ games why didn't you just hold off getting one for now.

The second video is actually pretty impressive if it works with an light source (and it's not just another peripheral)

So basically this is Sony way of getting people to buy their stupid eye camera. By using in conjunction with Morpheus.

I'm a little confused as to why they are developing this technology. AR requires real-world components to interact with the computer, and I can't see too many people rushing out to buy cardboard equipment made by Sony in order to play on it. As far as the lightsaber theory, they could use the camera and the Playstation Move hardware to create the same effect, with less money and less hassle, so why go into this?

None of this interests me. AR is a fun little distraction that I wont buy a PS4 camera for, and VR is just a way of mangling your vision (or whats left of it) it looks like a funny little thing I'd try in an arcade then never again.

Fad isnt really the word I'm looking for, because these things will be around in the long run. I like to see games played with controllers though, so hopefully AR/VR doesnt take over E3 while games (and the Vita) are ignored, to make way for descendants of the 3D craze Sony so quietly snuffed out a while back.

Done so many times in the past... it is never good and suffers from the same problem as Kinect, it only allows for two axis.

FYI, My android phone has had apps on it that work like that for a couple of years now. Just type Augmented Reality into the play store search. A really good AR app is Google Sky.

I don't know. I don't really get what it's FOR... I don't understand what you would do with this. Researching an idea is great though, and if they can make something really cool with the tech, then good for them.

I wouldn't sink any money into this if I was Sony or anyone else. It's not very exciting. Keep pushing VR so I can live out my Ready Player One fantasies in the Oasis.

Unfortunately it's obvious this technology is still in its infancy even after many years of development. Maybe our grandchildren will be able to play with photorealistic augmented reality tech but it doesn't look like we will any time soon. :( But I guess unrealistic, juddery, cartoony graphics is better than nothing.
