PS3 Shipments Have Ended In Japan

No more.

After more than 80 million systems sold worldwide, PlayStation 3 console shipments have come to an end in Sony's home country of Japan.

This was announced in a notice posted on the Japanese PlayStation website, translated by Gematsu. It pertains to the 500 GB PS3 model, which was the only remaining system in the country. The page mentions that shipments for the console have "ended."

No Caption Provided

The PS3 launched in Japan (and the US and other markets) in November 2006. It remains to be seen when PS3 shipments will end in the US or other major gaming markets. We will report back with more details as they become available.

In 2014, PlayStation software product development head for America, Scott Rohde, said people were still buying PS3s, even after the launch of the PlayStation 4. He stressed that Sony would support the PS3 "as long as there is a good business there for us."

He noted that the PS2 had a very long sales tail, with supporting continuing for the console even as the PS3 gained traction. The PS3 is now negatively affecting Sony's bottom line, so it is no big surprise that shipments are ending in Japan; and the same could happen in other regions.

At the end of April, Sony announced that PS4 shipments had reached 60 million units. Sony is projecting to ship another 18 million units during the current fiscal year, which is down year-over-year. Intriguingly, there is a report of Sony preparing a next-generation PlayStation console to launch in 2018.

The next major gaming news event is E3 2017, which takes place early next month in Los Angeles. GameSpot will be on the ground at the show to bring you all the news as it's announced.

No surprise. You can still get new ones for about $100, so not surprised it kept selling. It's impossible to find decently priced new 360's these days in comparison (they're all $250+).

@KimCheeWarriorX: You mean "looking at you VITA games" because that's where the majority of them are coming from.

I'm playing Persona 5 on my big, fat PS3. And it's running smoothly without a hiccup, not even once. Talking about a great swan song for a great console.

I can truly say, being at the age of 39 and will be exiting my thirties this year, PS3 has been with me from beginning when it was $600 bucks all the way to the last slim model and their were some hardcore years where i went through some tough times and PS3 was right there for me... while PS4 has been a great edition, there is still something special about the PS3, it was my storage for movies, pics, music and alot more. Rest Peacefully and I'm glad i have those memories.

True, even uncharted 3 and TLou put it through its paces. It had a rough start, but after a year or two it really hit its stride.

@opt1mu5prime: Cheers to that, man. Same for me. I still got it and it's quite the time capsule to plug in once in a while.

@Foxhound71: its funny because i just recently sold mine. I kept going back every now and then because i owned marvel vs. Capcom 2 digitally and some others, but i bought a switch on launch and with my ps4 pro on deck aswell, I just didn't have room for it anymore. I wish ps4 or switch could get marvel vs capcom 2, but i know I'll feel the same about the ps4 next aswell lol

End of an era. It's honestly painful to go back and use the system after owning a PS4 for a few years. It is slow, comparatively feature poor, and the controller is way worse in every way except battery life.

But it had a lot of great games - my hats off to that.

First New Zealand, now Japan and now the countdown begins for the remaining markets. It had a REALLY rough start like the XB1 after it but amazingly managed to turn it all around with the Slim. I'm still not sold on PS4 and XB1 so still have PS3 as my main gaming console due to having so much backlog and still finding quality things for it. I also recently went PC so I'm not missing out on much of anything PS4 and XB1 have either. Will be a sad day when PS3 gets to RIP in every market. So glad Sony yet again kept their promise of 10 year minimum support for their console. I feel that may be the last time Sony does that for hardware given how much the market has changed.

Had a good solid run. People who purchased a PS3 day 1 definitely got their money’s worth.

Considering how well the PS4 is doing right now I would expect it to easily surpass these numbers in the same time frame.

@biggamerdude: i'm a fan of sony ip... so what?... i am simply supporting the platform that makes sense to me. the number of exclusive first party and third party games found on ps4 is staggering versus the competition. why would i even contemplate the idea of buying into an x1 at this point if none of their exclusive games appeal to me? support the platform(s) that appeal to you -- that is all that there is to it. i might pick up a switch once the price falls because the value isn't there for me yet, but i do want to play some mario kart 8. i also game on pc when necessary. i think you have a hyperbolic definition in your head of what a fanboy is. a delusional fanboy is someone who defends a company regardless of its errors or mistakes... and even defends bad games on the platform just to show support. that is not me. sony has made mistakes just like every other company. at the end of the day, i have always been impressed by the variety and quality of their first party output (since the ps1 days) and they have not let me down in that respect. they have earned my support over the past 20 years. microsoft has not. nintendo was great back in the snes days and to an extent with the wii/ds (which i own btw), but not much else aside from that. if the switch turns out to be a great platform, i will show my support when the time comes. this is not fanboy talk at all.
