PS2's Onimusha: Warlords Will Release As Remaster On PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, And PC

Time to dust off your katana and take another slice at this remastered PS2 and PC game.

Onimusha: Warlords is the game that officially kicked off the Onimusha series, spawning many sequels to the fantasy action game. Now, the PS2/PC game is returning in remastered form, and will release on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC at the start of the new year. You can get a look at the new version of the game in the announcement trailer above.

The action game, first released in 2001, follows samurai Samanosuke Akechi and ninja Kaede as they fight to rescue Princess Yuki. Set in feudal Japan, the two must save Yuki from mysterious demons that have invaded her castle while uncovering the fiends' plot. Players wield katanas and other weapons as Samanosuke and Kaede battle their way to the castle.

The game is receiving a high-definition graphics overhaul of its characters, environments, and cinematics, and Capcom is adding widescreen support as well that allows for quick changing between widescreen and classic display modes. The studio is also adding support for analog sticks to boost movement accuracy during combat. Unlike the original Onimusha: Warlords, Easy Mode will now be available from the start of the game (whereas you had to fail a battle several times before it would unlock in the 2001 version). Lastly, a new soundtrack is being added to the game after the original game's composer was found to be using a ghostwriter (and possibly even faked being deaf).

Onimusha: Warlords HD will release on all systems on January 15, 2019 and will cost $20. In North America, you can already pre-order a physical copy of the game, with a digital pre-order coming soon. Players in Europe will be able to buy the digital version only.

This makes sense it was ported to the original Xbox so a new HD Port seems feasible. The PS2 original had terrible scan line issues. A $20 dollar price tag is perfect. I'm sure it'll sell great. Thanks Capcom!

UPDATE: Changing the score seems like a bad idea. I really liked some of those tracks. I hope PC gamers can swap out some audio files and restore the original music.

What happened Capcom, Resident Evil 2 Remake gets the special treatment, but Onimusha 1 only gets a paint job. I wonder if this will be the XBOX version with the doll... Liked the music on this game, but who actually composed the music :)

The first Oni game was in the Guinness world records for having the most instruments used to make a video game soundtrack.

"Capcom is adding widescreen support"

Right.. They can't even add widescreen support to their modern games. Let alone proper KB/M input.

@DAOWAce: Who would play a game like that with keyboard and mouse? Why not use a driving wheel instead?

@johno357: At the very least make cutscenes skippable so we don't have to sit through them every time we die.

Holy balls...how did I miss this article until now?! Day one purchase. No questions asked!

I can guarantee Capcom is using this as a litmus test of popularity to gauge whether remastering the remaining titles is worth it. And I sure as hell hope it pans out. Because I could totally go through the entire series again in HD glory.

@R34Vegeta: Well said, I hope they do as quality a job of remastering this as they did the remaster of REmaster. I also hope this means that Capcom might revisit other old titles and play with the idea of reviving them. I'm still pretty sore about them cancelling Mega Man Legends 3 for instance!

Definitely will be getting this. Although, I'm a bit disappointed they didn't remaster the entire series. Good stuff none the less!

I remember the original version having prerendered visuals for scenery, and wonder if this remaster will either go fully 3-D or just upscale said prerendered graphics.

@Sevenizz: It is a hack & slash Resident Evil set in feudal Japan. There were four main games, a fighting/melee game on the PS2 and a tactical game on the Gameboy Advance.

A similar, earlier game from Konami was Soul of the Samurai on the PS1.

@Sevenizz: It doesn't play like Resident Evil. Uses a lot of the same perspective and item management systems, but the swordplay makes it quite different.

The later games play more like stylish action games.

@gamerboy100: You're right, I own Onimusha Blade Warriors too, but I don't think it was so great to deserve a remaster, I'll be happy if Capcom remaster just the 4 main games.

Now we just need to talk about getting the series continued.

@CeltaVigo: EXACTLY! They enhanced the original game in such a spectacular fashion its ridiculous, played the shit out of that on my original Xbox back in the day. At the very least they should make that BC with the Xbox One
