Project Spark does not require Xbox Live Gold

Microsoft confirms Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Windows 8 game will be free on all platforms.

Microsoft's game-building tool Project Spark will not require an Xbox Live Gold subscription, the company confirmed in the Xbox One Reddit forum this week (via Polygon).

"You do not need an Xbox Live Gold account to play Project Spark," community manager Mike Lescault said. "You will not need a Gold subscription to play Project Spark for free on any platform."

Project Spark was announced for Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Windows 8 during Microsoft's Electronic Entertainment Expo briefing in June. A beta for the game will begin on PC this month and on Xbox One in January 2014.

At Gamescom 2013 in Cologne, Germany this summer, Microsoft announced new voice and motion capture features for Project Spark.

Creators can record their face and apply it to an in-game character, as well as perform a full-body motion attack or gesture and have it replicated in the game. Users can also record audio--including their own voices--and then modulate it in a "variety of ways."

Completely free? As in completely free from all types of payments apart from a spot DLC every few months? It's a welcome change for Microsoft. The only question is can it stand toe to toe with Little Big Planet and all the game editing tools on PC?

Sounds good doesn't it.

The thought is of course that this is a game creation tool. From what I understand you can create pretty much any type of game within it. It's pretty amazing and also the reason it's free.

Instead of paying, users will give away all their rights to the games they create. MS can then cherry pick the good ones.

@George Jones its not an insult, its facts and the facts are there too many paywalls for people who may not be able to afford them. especially when you just spent 500 on a console and wouldn't be be able to do much of anything with that console if you don't have live. how can you not agree, i mean why would you agree if you pay for love film why should MS charge you to have access to use that?

<< LINK REMOVED >> I really hate the paywall for non-MS services, it's really unfair and I don't see the justification. Is MS funding the development of the apps? Are they providing services for them? Even if they were, there should still be an opt-out, because the Xbox One should just access the internet like any other device and use whatever internet services other companies provide without needing to pay MS.

It makes me think of like old AOL or something, where you don't have "real" internet access. You're Xbox One (without Gold) is on the MS version of the internet which doesn't include access to certain services.

you see its great that MS has finally given something for free thats not behind a paywall but the fact you can use a 360 kinda makes this unimportant in terms of xbone importance, ill admit its one of the more interesting things but the fact of the matter is it don't really improve MS's standing in there much needed paywalls for anything.

Yay, it's coming to PC! We already have lots of games that are moddable, but this sounds like the next step to customize a game. It would be fun if Projekt Spark itself was moddable. Modception, lol.

Onlya few things I need to know regarding this game, that will affect my decision to play it.

- Does it require Kinect / webcam to function on the PC?
- Can you use a mouse?
- Just exactly how "free" is this game? I'm worried important features will be locked and require purchasing.

Or PC.

Wait, they said Windows 8, doesn't that include tablets and phones too? Providing you want to go with Microsoft in any of those areas. Although if you want to game on PC, you'll have to use Windows.

First of all this is not a game, but a game creator.

Second, this looks fucking amazing, its free and there will be microtransactions.

Third, give it to me right now.

Fourth, go check sincityspartan's videos on youtube about this game (5 minutes recaps of hour long streams)

Like LBP and such titles, you don't need to create anything, you can simply just play the games other people have made. It is still a game first and foremost.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> If no one makes game, you can't play anything, so... there's no ''project spark'' game . In LBP, you still got the campaign, which is a game in which you can create things. Project Sparks is about creating things and playing stuff other made, but its not a game by itself.

@Solace427 @spartanx169x

LBP is still a game, despite being able to create levels, or even all new games.

Project Spark is similar in that you can just play other peoples creations if you want, without ever touching the creation tools.

I admire the hook M$ but even as a Xbox owner and Gold member I'm quite sure this will require gold for many features. God I wish companies would just stop this "free" stuff its just pisses me off as a gamer/consumer.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's a Microsoft Studios release, so fat chance of that being on PS4. You can use a Windows 8 PC or a Surface Pro Tablet to play Project Spark though. It's a free game where you only pay for prop packages if you decide you need them.

In all honesty this looks like a game that Media Molecule would be working on. I am sure something like it will be coming out on PS4 around 2015.

Though this is a GREAT looking game.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> LBP and Minecraft are nothing like what Project Spark is. Project Spark is closer to a game engine tool set for making games to share. You can create just about any game genre you want, choose how the game controls work, and has cross platform play. Comparing those two games to Project Spark just doesn't really make sense.

This is something I'm really looking forward to. The Xbox Live subscription requirement wouldn't have been an issue as I've never had a problem with it.

If the only use the Kinect gets is me stomping around my lounge hamming it up then its money well spent!
