Project Scorpio Will Support Xbox 360 Backwards Compatibility

Project Scorpio now has more than 250 confirmed games.

Microsoft's Project Scorpio console will play all your Xbox One games and even some Xbox 360 titles, it has been revealed. Engineering lead Mike Ybarra confirmed today on Twitter that the new console will "of course" support the Xbox 360 backwards compatibility program.

This is not much of a surprise. Xbox boss Phil Spencer has spoken frequently about his ambition to create a gaming ecosystem with Xbox that goes "beyond" console generations and allows you to play your games on a number of devices. Another Xbox executive, Albert Penello, said this should help ease some of the "disruption" that can happen between console generations.

Backwards compatibility support for Xbox 360 games came to Xbox One in November 2015 as part of the console's New Xbox Experience update. There are now more than 250 Xbox 360 games playable on Xbox One; the newest addition was Blue Dragon, which arrived today.

Project Scorpio, or whatever official name Microsoft ends up giving the console, goes on sale in holiday 2017. Pricing has not been announced, but Microsoft has repeatedly referred to it as a "premium" device, so it likely won't be cheap.

Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro, a new, more powerful version of the PS4, launches on November 10 for $400. Microsoft has said Project Scorpio is more powerful than Sony's console by a significant margin.

Now if you can play 360 games in 4k- that would be a sweet deal.

How do we know it supports Xbox One games, as a lot of people in the comments are implying? All the tweet said was:

"360 Backwards compatibility will of course work on Scorpio. #xbox"

I'm guessing that all this means it that the emulator, which is required to play 360 games, has been ported to the Scorpio. Have I missed something though? Here is what Sony's lead architect, Mark Cerny, said about the difficulties of having existing games running on a different processor:

"Moving to a different CPU - even if it's possible to avoid impact to console cost and form factor - runs the very high risk of many existing titles not working properly," Cerny said. "The origin of these problems is that code running on the new CPU runs code at very different timing from the old one, and that can expose bugs in the game that were never encountered before."

So, could somebody link me to an article that supports the fact that Xbox One games will work too?

@s_moreta: http://www.gamespot.com/articles/console-transitions-can-be-super-disruptive-xbox-s/1100-6442853/

It's linked right there in -this- article.

"Whatever the case, "you can't go wrong," Penello said, because all the games and accessories will work across devices"

Scorpio will basically be scaled-up Xbox One hardware, and thus will run all existing Xbone games. The same way PS4 Pro can play all existing PS4 titles. Not sure why this is even a question, they've been clear since they first announced Scorpio that it's in the "Xbox One family" and all software and accessories will carry over.

@Spartan_418:

"Not sure why this is even a question"

No need to get moody just because someone on the internet hasn't been following every single announcement since the Scorpio's reveal. It was a legitimate question and you didn't have to taint your welcomed response by attacking my motives.

Of course it supports BC, because it's the SAME OS. It's a Win10 PC, just like the current Xbox One.

That's the whole point! These are just consumer-grade gaming PCs for the living room now.

Why wouldn't it? I never thought it was a possibility until today, especially when Phil touted "no games left behind going forward!"

Meanwhile only 1 out of 250 works well and its Red Dead Redemtion.

Other games stutters, freezes, and have sound issues.

@Zeevs86: Clearly you don't have many BC games. I have 3/4 of the list, and I've played more than half of them in the last year. A vast majority run fine. Even a full squad of 5 in Gears3 MP or Horde is pretty damned stable. A few frame rate drops at its worst.

@Zeevs86: BC is getting better in that regard, and Scorpio having more raw graphics power should allow it to more easily run the 360 emulator without performance issues.

Keep in mind the existing Xbone hardware was designed before MS planned to make BC happen, which won't be an issue with Scorpio.

Folks love to play old stuff on next gen hardware for some reason, so guess its a smart move. Guess that says a lot about the next gen games.

@Triton: it's more practical, as shelf space (and HDMI ports) are at a premium. Plus next gen consoles have faster and easier interfaces, making more appealing to play classic titles. And you gotta respect not having to double dip.

I almost feel sorry for Sony. They messed up so bad. That PS4 "Pro" is borderline pathetic. I'm anxious to see the difference between the two.

This is a smart move because the only games worth playing on X1 are 360 titles

There's no way that it wasn't going to support Xbox 360 backwards compatibility. This was set in stone as soon they figured what kind of mid gen system they were going to do

Usually I'm trashing MS...for various reason, but I have to say their BC has been far more palatable than Sony with that PSNow Streaming Cash Grab Trash.

Uh it better not have missing features from Xbox One, especially if it's an extension of the same. Did anyone really think that was going to be the case?

@sellingthings: Well it might not piss off One owners seeing as 360 compatibility was a bonus and never promised.

On the Sony side I wouldn't be pissed if PS4 Pro had PS3 emulation and PS4 never got it. (I don't think PS3 emulation will happen, for the record)

Then again I guess some people are pissed you have to get a New 3DS to play SNES titles.

Wasn't that a bit obvious?

They keep telling it's not meant to be a new gen so of course it has to bear with all the current gen can do and THEN some...

@almatha: It's great to be able to play your old games or pick up good ones that you missed. I'm playing Lost Odyssey now and loving it. It really expands the library of games available on the platform. Does anyone complain when Steam adds old games? Also MS can offer more 360 games as free GwG every month.

@cfscorpio: It's a very underappreciated feature for a console these days. Don't know exactly when the change of opinion happened. I love the option to play already paid for games on my current system & controller, and it's one more way to keep a game accessible for the near-far future.

I suppose it's not as big a fuss as it should be since 'remasters' are releasing so often & with lots of discussions around them. I buy the occasional, well made remaster, but never to simply have the opportunity to play the game again...That's what bc is supposed to be for, at least when publishers don't block it to sell us a new & prettier version. Shouldn't that option lie with us? Shouldn't the 'remaster' be able to sell itself without eliminating all other options for people that no longer own their older consoles? Steam is excellent for this, and at least MS are making the effort to acknowledge this for their own platform.
