Now Playing: Project Cars 2 - Difficult But Rewarding Racing Gameplay

Project Cars 2 developer Slightly Mad Studios is "impressed" with the Xbox One X hardware, COO Rod Chong said in a new interview. The Xbox One X version of the simulation racing game will have "enhancements," but Chong said he wasn't ready to get into specifics about those because the studio is still benchmarking.

"Unfortunately, I can't tell you that much right now because we are benchmarking as we speak," he told us. "We are impressed with the hardware but right now we are benchmarking. There will obviously be enhancements, but we are not ready to showcase exactly what those are yet. Other than it must be 60 frames per second or death."

Chong previously talked about why frame rate is so important for Project Cars 2, stressing that if the game did not run at 60fps, the experience would suffer.

People playing Project Cars 2 on PlayStation 4 Pro will also see enhancements, though specifics are unknown at this point. That console is available now, while the Xbox One X hits shelves worldwide on November 10.

The Xbox One X is a more powerful version of the Xbox One (and it's also beefier than the PS4 Pro). It supports the Xbox One games and accessories you may already own, and also plays Xbox 360 titles through backwards compatibility. Pre-orders for the Xbox One X opened last week, and they were a huge hit, apparently.

At Gamescom, Microsoft announced a list of more than 100 games that take advantage of the Xbox One X's power. The system has an eight-core custom AMD CPU that clocks at 2.3 GHz. The system has 12 GB GDDR5, a six-teraflop GPU, and 326 GB/sec memory bandwidth. The console costs $500/£450/$650 AU.

Project Cars 2 game director Stephen Viljoen recently said Project Cars 2 for Xbox One X will look "significantly better" than the PS4 Pro edition. "I can't tell you exactly what all the various sliders will be at when you're on Xbox One X versus on PS4 Pro, but obviously they'll be higher [on Xbox One X], so there will be a significant, a noticeable improvement, because you have better hardware," Viljoen said.

Project Cars 2 launches on September 22 for PC, Xbox One, and PS4. For more, you can check out all the cars and all the tracks through GameSpot's new videos below. Also linked below are recent news stories about the game.

digitalfoundry is the expert in the industry when it come to comparing games on ps4 and xbox and so far they have not found any major differences between games on ps4 pro and xbox x, the major difference is that you pay $100 more for the xbox x, remember gamers dont follow hype.

Avatar image for pcps4xb

@yukushi: some games to the eye might noy look like a huge difference but its there. Its pretty much guaranteed to run at a higher resolution. The pro will do great but the X will just do better. 😀

@yukushi: this is completely false, if you actually looked at Rise of Tomb raider there's substantial differences they said and miles more noticable without zooming in 25x like you had to with ps4 and x1 before

@yukushi: This statement is purely opinion. Digital Foundry clearly and numerously stated that the Xbox One X is in a league of its own and PS4 Pro is no match for it at all when it comes to hardware power. You do pay $100 more but not only do you get 40% more power you're getting a UHD 4k Bluray Player as well.

As for comparisons of games look at their recent Xbox One X vs PS4 Pro comparisons. Its a night and day graphical difference.

Avatar image for deactivated-5a807722de4ed

@yukushi: You're referring to a video and source that explicitly state the opposite of your argument and they have maintained their stance on this topic since their original unveiling of OneX. Comparing X1X with PS4 Pro is as nonsensical as comparing X1S with PS4 Pro. I bring this up because there's no need to lose sleep over OneX games being more "advanced" than Pro games because Sony will soon reveal PS5 that will be leaps and bounds over OneX but gamers, like you, will say PS5 games look better than OneX games.

The ONLY fair comparisons that can be made are between PS4 and original "brick" Xbox One, PS4 and X1S. There is no "equal" counterpart to PS4 Pro. One X is essentially Microsoft's "new" console with strict rules to not create exclusive games.

Sony should have not wasted their time, money and resources on PS4 Pro because original PS4 continues to do better and have games that look better than Xbox One. So, rather than ramping up their game strategy, Microsoft elected to focus on OneX to one up Sony, but they will not have a timely counter punch for PS5 so it's all for nothing!!!!

Avatar image for Kreten1

@caseyrybek: you are wrong, rise of the tomb raider they showed clear visual advantage unlike with ps4 and x1 before. PS5 won't happen untill at least there's 16TF GPU x4 more powerfull every gen. So when PS5 hits so will xbox 5 that will be more powerfull so what's your point? You hurt that x1X is better than Pro so you can't wait for next gen to start? LOL!

Just because Sony failed so miserably with newer consoles doesn't mean they are not competition PS4 vs x1, PS4 Slim vs X1 S, PS4 Pro vs X1X it's as simple as that no matter how much you don't like it that MS introduced much more powerfull hardware than Sony.

Strict rule not to create exclusives? What are you blabbering about? You mean extending userbase and not alienating people?

You do know that MS is already working on xbox 5 just as sony is on ps5, so what makes you think that somehow Sony will have next console and MS wont?

What would happen if Sony didn't have Pro, how would they compete with X1X? We heard that Scorpio is in the works before we heard anything about Neo.

Your dreams of PS5 coming out without competition is funny, ohh and again every console gen has been at least 4x more powerfull than previous so 4.2TF x4 is 16.8TF MINIMUM and 5nm architecture so keep waiting!

Avatar image for deactivated-5a807722de4ed

@Kreten1: before you went on your tirade, you should have clearly read my post. I AGREE that there are clear visual advancements on X1X games over PS4 Pro so you wasted your precious typing skills and time on your point about Tomb Raider. I agree captain tech, I agree!

I don't think Sony is sitting around shaking and thinking about PS5. They are still outselling Xbox One 2:1 and X1X, although "sold out" will do very little for Microsoft's gaming margins.

But, lets take a moment to reflect on what the real problem is. It's not the heated competition between both companies trying to one up each other with the latest tech. The underlying message here is, Xbox One was inferior from inception. There were countless failures; games like Quantum Break; the many games that were scrutinized for not handling expected FPS and resolution while PS4 was doing this easily with early games like Infamous.

So, rather than doubling down on games to make up for their stumble, Microsoft decides to enhance the console's capability to finally get games like Quantum Break at a level that gamers expect from these consoles. At the end of the day, it's Quantum Break. The game bombed for many reasons. At the end of the day, it's a 4K Gears of War or Forza 7. At the end of the day, it's Tomb Raider.....who gives a f&$# about these old ass games?

Between now and launch, what X1 game do you have to look forward to? During launch, what game do you have to look forward to? 1X1 is system that polishes turds. You however see it as a vehicle to extend user base. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe most gamers don't care about new games or exclusive titles. Maybe they are more interested in playing enhanced games from 2-3 years ago or backward compatibility games from 2 decades ago.

What do you suppose X1 owners are going to do today? Most likely update their system because updates are pushed every other day it seems.

What do you think PS4 owners are going to do today? Continue playing Lost Legacy....Law Breakers...or, maybe they'll download Absolver. Many options. What they are not doing today is searching for the latest tweets on an updated tech because PS4 owners don't need to concern themselves with what's down the road because they are very comfortable with their current situation.

@caseyrybek: You can't even make exclusive games on it if you tried too. I know a thing or two about developing games. It's not powerful enough to take that true leap into next gen, and if they tried, what ever game it would be probably would struggle. Literally every game that you would build on it can in fact be graphically downscaled to be played on the current based consoles. Why is that???

LAW OF DIMINISHING RETURNS. With games in the double maybe even triple digits for polygon counts with characters, its becoming harder and harder to distinguish the graphical difference now. You could look at a object with 30,000 polygons then look at the same object with 60,000 and not even be able to tell a difference from certain distances.

It is how a guy with a 10 year old PC can play a game like GTA 5 on low graphics settings, while a guy with an up to date beasty highend PC can play it at 4k Ultra Settings. These games with their current graphic status will always be able to downscale graphically. At least for the time being.

@caseyrybek: I highly doubt PS5 will be announced before 2019 E3 with a 2020 fall/winter Release. Xb1X is only impressive because of how they optimized the hardware. If you took the same hardware, and built a rig your self the results would be vastly worse, and has been proven hence the naysayers before the actual DF interview. With that said I do not think the PS5 could be alot more powerful while hitting the sweet spot on pricing until about 2020 when a few new Gpu's models have been out for some time. Microsoft really did go all out with their engineering on the X.

The next few years will be interesting. With bit coin farming gaining even more traction Gpu's are going for insane prices, and there is no end in sight. This makes is difficult to build a pc on the cheap. If Sony, and Microsoft can bulk buy their cards, and sell 4k consoles for around 500$ or under this might take some gamers away from pc.

@yukushi: Digital Foundry: "Regardless, the fact is that both Rise of the Tomb Raider and F1 2017 are adopting native 4K rendering in situations where PS4 Pro is checkerboarding instead, and that's a comparison point we really didn't expect to see. After all, this represents is a 2x increase in the native rendering resolution between Xbox One X and PS4 Pro, from hardware with a 43 per cent increase in compute power and a 50 per cent uplift in memory bandwidth".

Avatar image for deactivated-5a60f921620ed

@khanwashere: Native 4k, better texture enhancements, better lighting, better colors, anti-aliasing, smoother frame rates, and dolby atmos. That doesn't "excel over the Pro by a large margin"? Not sure what you are smoking, but you need to share!

For people who want to get an idea of performance across the systems, I've seen this on other sites, DF comparing Tomb Raider on X1X & PS4 Pro: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2017-how-rise-of-the-tomb-raider-on-xbox-one-x-improves-over-ps4-pro

Unfortunately some intentional blurriness (depth of field and also motion blur) is disabled on X1X, so it's automatically sharper due to the effects being turned off on that system. Due to that it's difficult to compare the two equally but we get an idea.

Avatar image for khanwashere

@girlusocrazy: I played Rise of the Tomb Raider first on Xbox One when it launched as an exclusive. I had several issues with it in regards to the image quality not being very good, Quatum Break in particular was unplayable. I was on a 70" 4K TV at the time so practically everything on Xbox One was shit and I sold it. Got the games again on Steam and played them in 4K from the PC, was mind blowing how much better they were visually. The Xbox One X Tomb Raider looks shockingly close to how I remember the PC version. I'm looking forward to the X. I know some developers will drop the ball and not do things properly and that's where PC comes in. For the games that devs put their hearts into and take seriously because their reputations are on the line, the X will be the go to console for the next few years. The Pro is great but the X will be better, and we all want better.

Avatar image for girlusocrazy

@khanwashere: It does look close though at a lower frame rate, but if you have a PC that can do all that why even get the X1X?

Avatar image for khanwashere
KhanWasHere

@girlusocrazy: My PC is loud, it generates a lot of heat, no pretty UI and I can use game disc's at a lower price again. I can list more reasons to go with consoles than I can PC. My PC needs the past couple decades have been purely the graphics, which now consoles are coming close enough that I don't really care anymore. I'm very critical and demand a lot of quality for my time and money. If consoles are going to give me the kind of gaming experience the developers meant to deliver without all the sacrifices made to get it to fit onto a console then I'm cool. the whole ridiculous 30/60fps debate doesn't phase me, I'm not a super obsessed ADD online competitive multiplayer fanatic. I prefer quality gaming over the toxic behavior that is drawn to the never ending looping of spawn, run, gun, die, spawn mentality. Those people demand more frames because their heads will explode otherwise. Give a gamer jacked up on a case of Mountain Dew 30fps and watch them lose patience and go online and rant about console and games sucking.

This is NOT promotional material. This is just their professional opinion. If you were following PCars2 closely, you would've noticed that all public presentations of the game on console are done on the PS4 pro as SMS wants to showcase their product at the best hardware at the moment. It is fair to assume that the X version will be the best console version of PCars2. The vast majority of videos on Youtube are on PC though.

@toonarmy20: Devs always praise the newest hardware, unless it's Nintendo. It isn't till about a year in when they realize the reality of the consoles limitations and start backing off on their expectations and enthusiastic support. Devs even started dumping support for the original Xbox One and focused on PS4 and PC instead after initially praising it. Luckily, the One X is the real deal and should be the tipping point that takes game development a little further than it has because of the current console markets stranglingly low overhead.

Regarding the system, I hope they are able to get the game running at 4k (isn't that the point of the system...?). I hope they do something like the Tomb Raider game, where there was multiple graphics modes... like 4k, with some grfx options turned down... or choosing a lower resolution with 'enahancements.' After playing the Forza games on my PC with 4k resolution, it looks just horrible going back to the consoles 1920 x 1080... Being able to see clearly down the road really helped me be a better driver.

@Daveof89: Oh, absolutely! For proper context, I should have also added that I output to my 65" SAMSUNG 4k Panel. At this size, you can strongly tell the difference between 1080p and 4k, especially when you're on your couch only about 5-6ft away from the screen.

Avatar image for darkelf83

@Daveof89: Really. That is what MS is marketing this console as, a 4K machine. MS is pushing the native 4k thing and people are going to expect it. It puts a lot of unfair pressure on developers.

@Daveof89: Really bro, hold on, its not quite that easy!! Here's a link to page that gives charts and graphs cause we all love charts and graphs.

http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/by-size/size-to-distance-relationship

So really you can have a smaller screen and still see a difference at the proper distances though to me its a much smaller difference than going from 30 to 60 fps. And less people are sensitive to changes in resolution than the difference between 30 and 60fps so your probably right on the it not affecting your gameplay. But 4k is a nice sales pitch!!!

It s gonna look little better on XBX than on PS4 Pro. Gameplay will be the same across all 3 platforms and the best version will obviously be on a PC.

You see something kids, rFcator 2 is the best simulator on the market, the only other game that comes close is Automobilits because it uses same ISI simulation engine used by real racing teams.

The point is, people dont play either game because they look good, no, they dont look good and compared to current racing games they look somewhat crap but people play them for the best simulation and for best AI in a racing game as well as the best online league racing.

Both consoles will get exactly the same core game while one will look better in some areas. Probably distance rendering and such, but when im racing at high speed i keep an eye on the racing line so better looking trees and mountains in the distance are useless or even certain track side objects, no one looks at that, its not what racing games are made for.

Avatar image for cyrribrae

@dudebropartyyo: Correction: It's not what the racing games that you, personally, enjoy playing are made for. There's a reason Forza and GT have always tried to market their games as having great fidelity to the feeling of racing, without necessarily burdening millions of would-be players with the specifics of millimeter perfect braking. The point is: people don't buy racing games (or shouldn't) because they're perfect simulations. They buy racing games because they're FUN. For you, fun is knowing that the game's physics are accurate. That's great. For millions of others, having just enough realism in a Forza or GT and a fair dose of arcadey silliness is exactly what they're looking for. They're not wrong, either.

Different games for different people. I'm glad the 1X is making the experience better for everyone on the spectrum.

Avatar image for dudebropartyyo
DudeBroPartyYo

@cyrribrae: I know that, that wasnt the point. I play everything from old school arcade racers to top notch hardcore sims.

The point was, people are once again obsessing over which version will look better in some probably not so important areas when both will play the same and provide same physics experience. The reason i mention rFcator 2 looking average is because people who care about the physics dont often care about that much about the graphics.

And lastly of course its good that 1X is pushing. PS4 kicked Xbox One's ass which made them release a better upgrade system which will push Sony even further next console cycle. Personally i think consoles need to do much much more quality wise :)
