With Guitar Hero: Aerosmith and Guitar Hero: Metallica already out, and Guitar Hero: Van Halen widely rumored, the search is on for the next big musical act to get its own game in Activision's rhythm franchise. One title people can knock off the list is Prince, the rock-funk legend behind such multiplatinum albums as Purple Rain and Controversy and such hits as "When Doves Cry" and "Kiss."

No Caption Provided

Appearing on PBS's The Tavis Smiley show, the artist formerly known as "O(+>"--real name Prince Rogers Nelson--revealed he had been approached by Activision to license parts of his catalog for the Guitar Hero franchise. By his account, he turned them down outright on principle.

"Well, I ain't mad at them. I hear it made, like, $2 billion and they came to us and offered us a very small portion of that," explained Prince. "But I just think it's more important that kids learn how to actually play the guitar. It's a tough instrument--it's not easy. It took me a long time, and it was frustrating at first. And you just have to stick with it, and it's cool for people who don't have time to learn the chords or ain't interested in it, but to play music is one of the greatest things."

God I hate the "pick up a real instrument" crap. Its a GAME something that you can just pick up and have fun. what sounds better to you? "Hey guys wanna play a few songs on RB/GH?" or "Hey guys wanna spend years and hundreds dollars managing and learning complex instruments which vary often for guitar/bass, then spending weeks remembering some songs? oh yeah, the good instruments cost over 200$ by the way, not including amps and lessons(if you can find any)" I play real guitar too, and I can play some riffs to some songs here and there. but I play music games because, really... How long is it going to take me to play "Battery" by Metallica on real guitar?

I think there's lots of people here that are missing the point. Its a game - that's why we're all here. If people want to learn to play guitar, good on them. GH & RB are games and people play them cause they're great fun. I don't hear the argument of - if you want to shoot a gun, join the army.......pfft! As for Prince - pity, he's a great guitarist and has some great songs, though hearing some people sing prince songs...........

I think it's a census of what we've been dubbed as the "Guitar Hero" Generation, which I've heard older people peg people my age for. Essentially, the "Guitar Hero Generation" is a knock on us, which it seems Prince buys into. That we don't want to be anything. We just want to pretend to be. Ie: not be an actual guitarist, just pretend to be one. I think it's a little harsh and unfair, but whatever.

Now a GH Led Zeppelin would be lights out! I ain't mad at Prince, he earned the right to have control over his music. But I would think that it would be funny to see my 8 yr old daughter trying to sing "Uptown", "Darling Nikki", or "Controversy."

"and guitar hero did give him the cheap end of the deal so wooh go prince." we don't even know how much they offered him..it might've been a lot more than a "very small portion" to other people. anyway, like a lot of people here have said, guitar hero actually inspired them to play the guitar so i think it's the money. all he had to do was say yeah you can use my songs and he would've made money.

Playing a video game and learning an instrument are two completely separate entities. Just because the controller is shaped like a guitar, you should not assume correlation with what its emulating. It is completely different and people should understand that people play GH because its fun, not because they don't feel like playing the "real" thing. You don't see people telling others to play real sports or use real guns; this genre shouldn't be any different. I understand what Prince is trying to say, but I believe its a bit misguided.

joshzen Posted May 2, 2009 11:58 am ET True that Prince. Good for him standing up for his principals... GH is definitely not playing guitar although it does grant you good finger dexterity. I don't buy the "I don't have time" to learn an instrument... let's be honest, you don't want to SPEND the time learning, you have it, otherwise you wouldn't play video games. i agree

i actually wouldn't mind some prince, but seriously? when will people realize that GH and real guitar are two different things? I've played guitar for 10 years in several bands, drums in one now, and that's absolutely great, but it's a lot of work, and hardly worth it. even after our practices we usually play a few GH /Rock band songs now, between halo 3 and smash bros. it's completely different. How long did it take you to understand how to play at least well enough to pass a song on medium? maybe an hour? just like someone says below, it's about that quick rockstar fix, just to 'feel' like you're there. Of course real music is more rewarding, but most don't have time for that. and the ones that do will move from GH to real guitar or drums. what are you proving, prince?

Well, were better off for not having Prince's arrogance to groove to in Rock Band anyway. Wii wouldn't have been able to re-create his name (symbol) accurately anyway.

Guitar Hero Prince would have been ok, IMO Guitar Hero got out hand when they made World Tour. Can't they just go back to the good old days of GH2?

I think these themed Guitar Hero games are getting a little out of control. Why not make them downloadable content for current and future Guitar Hero games? I think it's good that he turned it down. Playing a real guitar is so much better than the clunky plasic poser model.

Why are alot of you guys jumping on him just because he refused to put his name on a GH game? The man can do what he wants and it's pretty admirable seeing that he turned down easy money. That said, he's probably got more than enough already.

So let me get this straight.. lol.. "Prince" thinks he's too good for GH/RB games(or better yet.. wasnt offered enough money).. but were about to see a "Beatles" endorsed Rock Band game. So.. yeah.. in terms of support from those with musical integrity and "relevance".. which side is winning that battle?

I've been playing the guitar for 8 years now and I think guitar hero is great. It's gotten people more interested in actual instruments and its a fun party game. I don't even consider it in the same category as "Musical Instruments". That's not really what it is shooting for though. It's like an interactive CD or DVD. Something to do with your fingers while you listen to some good music.

Amen Prince! I never thought anyone would take my side in this argument. I can play the guitar and know some music theory,I don't suck at it like most "guitar players". I suck at and do not enjoy or appreciate guitar hero. Guitar hero is fun to play your favorite songs with but as far as music goes it is pointless.Bravo on making something popular and money making though

prince may be weird, but he is in the top 100 best guitar players ever, and he did go to the same guitar school with slash so he aint a no body. and i do agree with his statement, instead of spending all that time playing guitar hero go and play the real thing it is much more enjoyable and rewarding.

What I've found, being a wannabe guitar god and a GH player, is that guitar playing is a lot of hard work and what drives you to become a good guitarist is primarily "that feeling" that you imagine yourself having if you could rock like your heros in front of people. GH lets you get to that spot much more quickly, i.e. it satisfies our desperate need for a quick fix, GH takes some skill and patience, but the whole time you are working on it you are "living the rock star life" so to speak, so it is very satisfying. Whereas, spending all your youth trying to master the real guitar with the slim hope that you'll make it big so you can get that feeling for real is a much much much larger investment than going the GH route. I love GH (though I rarely play it) because it lets everyone feel what it's like to be a rock star, which is a great feeling that I recommend for everyone, and with none of the drawbacks of actually making it your career.

I know what he's getting at...but it's sorely misplaced. He doesn't seem to understand that maybe, just maybe, people's love of Guitar Hero could lead to those, who don't actually play guitar, to wanna go out and learn it, for real. It can be a means to an end and he, himself, will get some ends out of it, feel me?
