With Guitar Hero: Aerosmith and Guitar Hero: Metallica already out, and Guitar Hero: Van Halen widely rumored, the search is on for the next big musical act to get its own game in Activision's rhythm franchise. One title people can knock off the list is Prince, the rock-funk legend behind such multiplatinum albums as Purple Rain and Controversy and such hits as "When Doves Cry" and "Kiss."

No Caption Provided

Appearing on PBS's The Tavis Smiley show, the artist formerly known as "O(+>"--real name Prince Rogers Nelson--revealed he had been approached by Activision to license parts of his catalog for the Guitar Hero franchise. By his account, he turned them down outright on principle.

"Well, I ain't mad at them. I hear it made, like, $2 billion and they came to us and offered us a very small portion of that," explained Prince. "But I just think it's more important that kids learn how to actually play the guitar. It's a tough instrument--it's not easy. It took me a long time, and it was frustrating at first. And you just have to stick with it, and it's cool for people who don't have time to learn the chords or ain't interested in it, but to play music is one of the greatest things."

I can't help but say that I'm a little disappointed. The song Purple Rain is an epic of guitar melody!

I'm of the school that Guitar Hero and Rock Band are good ways to get kids to pick up the real instruments, so I disagree with Prince on that count, but man, a bunch of you suckers clearly have no idea what you're talking about: Prince is an *unbelievable* guitarist. I can only imagine the emo garbage some of you must listen to.

you can look at this game like a simulator, why play a racing game with a wheel when you can drive you're own car? and if you say its racing its different.. well then you go and pick up a guitar and play metallica, i'm sure you'll land every chord. took me a month to beat expert, and prob will take me 10 years to master any of those songs on a real guitar, its a game, if i wanted to spend 10 years of my life to get that song right, well then maybe i would do it, but its not my thing and its why i have all the guitar hero's. period.

Somehow when I think of the guitar gods that would make me want to play the instrument, prince does not come to mind. From Kirk Hammet (metal), to Eric Clapton or Jimmy Page (Rock), there are really great guitarists for people to be inspired by. Perhaps someone needs to explain what a party game is to this guy. Is this the same kind of person who thinks FPS's are both a murder simulator and a training tool?

I'm teaching a guy to play guitar because he started playing Guitar Hero and wanted the real deal. I don't think GH or RB has stopped anyone picking up a real instrument, instead, I think it has encouraged them

See that is exactly what I have been saying. You want to play a Guitar, get a real guitar and learn that. These games are what's wrong with the game industry, it is slowly killing the original games for crap like these and sequels way too many sequels.

I respect his decision. But I have three friends who were inspired to buy a real guitar and learn because of Guitar Hero. One of them is actually pretty good now (at both the game and the instrument).

Yeah I agree with Avalanched, Prince is very talent, but he has always been funny about his music. Remember Weird Al wanted to do one of his songs and was turned down.

I can't get mad at prince for saying that. He is a truly gifted guitar player. It's a little different when it's chad kruger from Nickleback saying what prince said though. Since I've started playing with a band, I have barely touched Guitar Hero. I only sing when I'm at a friends house.

well people just play it for fun most people just dont have the patience to learn an instrument its messed up that you would deny activision based on that. Especially since GH and RB have really inspired alot of people to pick up real instruments. Why does everybody assume that people who play GH think its the real thing because they dont.

It's not like Guitar Hero is destroying anyone's chances of becoming a guitarist. Hell, there maybe some kids who like Guitar Hero and/or Rock Band so much that they are inspired to learn how to play a real guitar.

Too bad, a Prince game would have been the first time I bought a rhythm game. But as a fan, I would have already guessed he would not do it. He is hardcore about his integrity. I also assume that is why I have never heard his music on American Idol (I also think I heard him diss that show once as well). Props to him, and the people who have recognized his talent in these comments. LOL at the people who obviously don't know who he is ("What songs would even work?" "He hasn't been relevant in 2 decades." "I have never even heard a song by him").

playing an actual instrument (not just guitar) is frustrating but far more fulfilling. the fact that he turned this down on principle doesn't really say much to me other than that he's just so flippin' rich that he actually can. who knows though, a prince guitar hero might have actually made me want to get into the series finally. oh well, good call, somebody with some sway needed to say it.

Good move, Prince! It's not that there is anything wrong with Guitar Hero, but if people are really into music they should try to learn to play a real instrument instead of playing that insanely difficult guitar toy. After all, there isn't much to choose from in the way of good rock music (being produced) these days, and it would be nice to know that the next generation will have more to listen to than hip-hop and pop.

apparently they asked someone behind led zeppelin and they said the same thing. they said something along the lines that their music was so carefully thought out with passion that they dont want people just playing it with a couple of buttons on a plastic guitar. i dont understand why these artists dont want their music on these games. this is no different than any other media using their music. watching a music video, listening to the song on a cd or itunes, listening to a song while timing strumming along on a game. its just another way to enjoy music. for any kids that think if they can play guitar hero they can play guitar, then they have problems. not the bands who made the music. i personally play guitar and guitar hero, and i have to agree with the guy below me. guitar hero made me faster on guitar, and my hand eye coordination improved some as well.

read between the lines here people "it made, like, $2 billion and they came to us and offered us a very small portion of that," this translates to "I'm Prince .... you need way more money to get my name & music Activision"

I respect his opinion, still Guitar Hero opened me to a lot of other musicians I actually never thought I'd like. Guitar Hero may be plastic music, but for people who would just like to play music with friends and have a lot of fun with it, it may also be "one of the greatest things."

first off playing guitar should be differentiated with playing guitar well; the former is not that difficult , the latter is and takes real skill; but either way the only two instruments actually worth learning if you are gonna play an actual instrument is violin and piano, those are gentleman's instruments; guitar is just something alot of people try for a little while to impress someone but thats all besides the point, guitar hero is like wii games; people dont actually want to do the real thing, the game provides a nice and "easy" alternative to kind of half *** something you are interested in but not to that degree; i really doubt anyone picks up guitar hero thinking they will learn to play guitar from it

I don't think Activision or Harmonix have the evil plot to overtake the music industry with its rhythm games. It's just a fun alternative to jam to our favourite songs. I play real bass and spend some of my spare time playing GH and sometimes RB. I take the bass seriously and I'm actually in University taking music courses. GH is nothing more than that but it's still fun to pick it up every once in a while. Although, I gotta give credit to GH though as it improved the speed and stamina of my fingers. So there was benefit for me on either end.

MissMorphine Posted Apr 30, 2009 9:42 pm CT GH: Prince?... whats next... GH: Hanna Montana?

She doesn't even play a musical instrument. Now GH:Jonas Bros on the other hand... I'm not a fan of theirs I'm just saying.

Prince was from my childhood.Whenever I hear "When the doves cry" I can't help but think about his movie I don't remember the name.

I still find it hard to believe that he renamed Tara Patrick, Carmen Electra and that she still goes by that to this day and not her real name. As for the comment on the drums I would think they'd have to go with Sheila E. since she was his drummer.

I would love to see the stats on how many people that play a real guitar (and I mean play) actually have this game and play it frequently. I for one played it awhile and got bored with it. I am sorry but a guitar hooked up to a nice amp turned up makes playing guitar hero seem...yawn. Hey, its a cute game thou :)
