Prey Revealed at E3 2016, Not a Sequel or Remake [UPDATE]

Prey Again.

[UPDATE] In a post-press conference interview, director Raphael Colantonio revealed more details about Prey. He said that it is not a sequel or a remake; instead, it's "a reimagining of the IP." He confirmed that the game won't be mission-based like Dishonored and will instead be one large area in which you can revisit areas and explore. Lastly, he revealed that you'll be able to play as either a male or female character. The original story follows.

Publisher Bethesda announced during its pre-E3 press briefing on Sunday that a Prey sequel is in development. The publisher introduced it with a debut trailer, starring a protagonist named Morgan, set in the year 2032.

Now Playing: Prey - E3 2016 Official Reveal Trailer

Developed at Arkane Studios' Austin office, Prey promises to be a psychological thriller set in a dangerous universe. The trailer shows Morgan in both a residential setting, presumably on Earth, as well as in an off-world location. The trailer implies that Morgan is a test subject in a psychological experiment featuring hostile environments.

A previous version of Prey 2 was in development at one point, only for it to be canceled. Bethesda confirmed the cancellation in 2014.

A rumor surfaced recently suggesting that a "completely reworked" version would be announced at E3.

The first Prey was released back in 2006 for PC and Xbox 360 by Human Head Studios, which has gone on to develop games like Dungeon Defenders II.

a "reboot"? that is rather disappointing. was really hoping for an actual continuation of the first game.

the native american tie-ins were pretty awesome in the original. hopefully this incorporates something on the same lines.

I really hope this release, continues with the AWESOME Sound work of the first Delivery, it was a really awesome game and underrated actually, but the sound, my god, it was gloriously delivered, I enjoyed so much the first game, Bethesda knows how to make good games, and don't disappoint, at all. please do a great job on sound, study the first one, enable EAX, even on headphones it sounded awesome....

So why call this Prey?

This has nothing to do with prey but Aliens...

That is so sad, because it might make newer gamers think this is a better vision of the original, which is a surprisingly good game.

Looks interesting, but if the game is walking through hallways shooting shadow monsters for hours, that's going to be disappointing.

@PETERAKO: Those games have always been big releases for EA every year though. Plus, FIFA at least is waaay bigger in Europe.

@Mogan: They certainly are big releases, but they are in no way E3 worthy.

@PETERAKO: I think being big releases is what makes them E3 worthy. Big release = big hype.

@Mogan: But there is no hype for fifa or nfl. Everyone knows they are coming every year and what they are about. There are no news and no one talks about them. It seems more like a corporate obligation.

I always felt that the Prey theme/setting could be utilized more than in just one game. (which was a great game btw)

How the FU ( K do you turn off the stupid auto-video player? I HATE that goddamn thing. Prey looks really cool. My disappointment over Prey 2's cancellation subsided when I saw this.

I Don't get how they can call it Prey if it has nothing to do with the original...

I mean, Prey was great because of what it was: Poltergeist, X-Files, and Quake wrapped up in a beautiful FPS package.

Now they're turning it into...something else? I don't know we shall see, still too early to jump to conclusion. The shooter action looked great but if it just a AAA version of SOMA in space I am going be disappointed.

@mrbojangles25: I think it's just a name change more than anything, I mean Prey 2 didn't look much like a "sequel" in the traditional sense anyway. It has been so long since Prey came out I just don't think they want to brand this as the second game in a series, instead just call it "Prey" so new people don't feel like they're missing out on the story, and fans of the original will know it's gonna be the same kind of game... at least that's my interpretation, time will tell!

I mean the trailer made it look quite different from the Prey 2 we saw glimpses of, but it doesn't look any more different from the original Prey than the 2nd one appeared to be.

@mrbojangles25: Yup i finished this on the Xbox 360 loved it so much i went for the full 1000G, although i totally agree with that point might still to early to tell but those reasons are what made Prey great.

@Xylymphydyte: a "remake" would be them just remaking the original game with same setting, characters, etc.

"reboot" is usually more on the lines of taking ideas from the original and taking a dump on them.

@elessarGObonzo: Semantics in the long run, it's harder to mock the director when you split that many hairs!

But otherwise we totally agree. Prey was probably the last shooter of its kind and will always be one of my favorites.

Kinda disappointed that they're ditching the whole off-world Cyberpunk setting. But even, the whole horror adventure premise doesn't look bad at all.

Prey was the original Portal, and in many ways it achieved and surpassed the technology used for Portal. The only game it could be compared to is Antichamber. I hope they keep up this IP and create a surreal experience with their level design

@shane33046: Prey was a generic FPS with no investment in its setting, get over it. This looks much more promising considering it's being made by people who understand how to make immersive sims in the vein of System Shock.

@Prats1993: sorry to offend your boyfriend. The setting is the same as every other damn game these days. The original was a great shooter, sometimes you don't need to invest that heavy in to setting to make it good.

So glad it's being made by Arkane, the closest dev we have to a modern looking glass studios. Supposedly it's heavily inspired by System Shock. Can't wait.

Looks scary as hell, hopefully its like alien isolation but with a bit more action. Limited ammo and monsters throughout the hallways, you must survive and find out what the **** happened on the space station.
