Possible Xbox One Hardware Upgrade in the Pipeline, Says Phil Spencer

"You'll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation."

Microsoft has said it is building towards a future where its games consoles will be upgradable, allowing the company to keep hardware viable by incrementally increasing its power instead of replacing it with an entirely new device.

Speaking at a recent media event, as reported by Polygon, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said he believes that Windows 10 could be used as a ubiquitous operating system that unifies all its devices, while the various hardware it runs on evolves, similar to the way PC are upgraded.

"We see on other platforms, whether it be mobile or PC, that you get continuous innovation that you rarely see on console,' he said. "Consoles lock the hardware and the software platform together at the beginning of the generation. Then you ride the generation out for seven or so years, while other ecosystem are getting better, faster, and stronger. And then you wait for the next big step function."

He continued: "When you look at the console space, I believe we will see more hardware innovation in the console space than we've ever seen. You'll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation allowing the same games to run backward and forward compatible."

Since Microsoft has "a Universal Windows Application running on top of the Universal Windows Platform," it will be able to improve hardware "without invalidating the games that run on that platform."

It is not clear whether this means second-gen Xbox One games can run on first-gen hardware.

He continued: "We can effectively feel a little bit more like we see on PC, where I can still go back and run my old Doom and Quake games that I used to play years ago but I can still see the best 4K games come out and my library is always with me.

"Hardware innovation continues while the software innovation is able to take advantage and I don't have to jump a generation and lose everything that I played on before."

You'll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation

Phil Spencer

Asked to elaborate later, Spencer noted that Sony is doing something similar to this in the way it is adding VR capabilities to the PS4. When PlayStation VR launches, it will include a standalone device with its own processor to handle computation for the device.

"Sony is doing this with VR and adding VR capabilities mid-cycle to the PlayStation 4 and they are doing that by adding another box. I don't mean that as a negative. But it's not changing what the core console is about.

"For consoles in general it's more important now than it's ever been, because you have so many of these other platforms that are around. It used to be that when you bought your console you were way ahead of the price performance curve by so much, relative to a PC. But now PCs are inexpensive and your phones are getting more and more capable."

Despite all this, Spencer did not provide any concrete details on whether Microsoft plans to upgrade the Xbox One, or introduce a whole new platform in the future that can be iterated on in the way described above.

"I'm not going to announce our road map for hardware," he said. "I want to make sure that people see that what we are doing enables us to be more committed to what consoles are about than we've ever been and innovate more consistently than we ever have. That's the key for me."

More clickbait from Gamespot. That is not what Phil Spenser stated. And it's obvious this is whole new level of desperation of Microsoft to try to get gamers and developers on Windows 10. The Xbox One is trash and it's obvious you should just buy a PC if you want Microsoft exclusive. The Xbox console is dead and Microsoft is trying to escape to PC as a desperate last resort.

@xboticon: Why are you stating nonsense as fact? Both the Xbox console and brand seem to be doing fine. It seems the only problem here is your comprehension of the fact that second place doesn't equate to failure.

@xboticon: As long as people buy Xbox and Xbox games in the millions, it isn't going anywhere.

It's called consumer demand, it's how things work.

Words are cheap, actions are not.

I don't think Xbox one is capable of such features ( adding significant power ) as it stands.. We'll see, I'm all for it if it's possible. Be nice if when they designed these consoles- to have one video card capable of operating in SLI or dual that you can later purchase and hook up thru an outer slot/slide.

I called it! Years ago!

Can't wait to see this get implemented. I loved how easy it was to upgrade the HDD of the X360, and thought someday that same principle would apply to other parts.

@skyhighgam3r: I was thinking the same recently, bet they have swappable gfx modules and ram carts like some older systems had. I also bet they name it the X10 to show the unification of Xbox and Windows 10.

@suicidesn0wman: Except this would require an entirely new console over the current Xbox One since the current X1 doesn't have these magical connections for GPU's and RAM chips you think exist at all let alone as externally connectable parts.

@suicidesn0wman: Maybe yours was, but I don't think that's what is alluded to in the article. Sounds like to me he's talking about a new revision of the current X1 with upgraded hardware built in, not externally plug and play upgrades.

I don't think you will ever see a console with external plug and play upgrade modules for things like GPU/RAM/CPU etc. In order to pull that off you have to run some sort of data bus/traces from the motherboard to external connectors which would significantly increase the cost of manufacturing the unit. Not something I think they would find acceptable in cheap commodity hardware at the $300 price point.

@mikemurphy80: And I was replying to someone else, not specifically to the article itself. Your assumption is your own mistake.

Also these consoles came out at $500, wont be surprised to see next gen start at 500-600 as well. Also, I never said CPU, I did say GFX and RAM though. I already know how I would tackle modular GFX cards, and RAM Carts have been used on older machines in the past, so it isn't a new idea.

I think you just lack imagination and therefore can't see the possibilities...

@suicidesn0wman: My imagination has nothing to do with it.

Yes, they could do external gfx module if they wanted to. Those exist today, albeit in a pre-production form running over the newest external thunderbolt bus. But they don't work that well yet and this means they would have to separate the GPU from the CPU like its currently configured in the X1/PS4.

External RAM carts as you call them would be harder to do. The old one's in the past you are thinking about weren't "system RAM". They would be the equivalent to a external hard drive today as that's where you store your game saves/patches/game storage itself etc. The system RAM for a computer (in this case a console) requires tons of motherboard traces directly to the main system chip (CPU/GPU in this case since this RAM is shared by them on consoles). In order to somehow get the same amount of bandwidth and speed required for system RAM... esp DDR4/5 out of some external plug is not possible today. So you're stuck with trying to figure out how to get those mobo traces out to an external plug, which again will INCREASE THE COST OF MFG SIGNIFICANTLY. Like well beyond making the console cost $500.

So unless MS gets into inventing new hardware standards for the entire industry, it ain't gonna happen.

@mikemurphy80: Lets just agree to disagree on what is and isn't possible and at what cost. You'll hold your stance that it can't be done cost efficiently, I'll hold mine that it can be done, and done for $500 or less. Deal?

If you want your console to be scalable, it'll need to be scalable right out of the gate. Maybe they're planning something like "Xbox 1.5", an upgrade-ready slim version or something like that.

@FBohler: If they do this during the current gen, they'll have to figure out how to support the consoles already out in the wild. Most likely would have to go through the USB3.0 ports or the custom Kinect port on the back(probably have to create a pass-thru adapter).

@suicidesn0wman: It would be insane to deal with the installed base, and even harder to persuade developers to out "X1" and "X1.5" versions of the same game, fully optimized to each system. So yes, it's a monster challenge to make something like this run smoothly to customers and suppliers.

@FBohler: Yeah, it would be a challenge, though many of the developers are already dealing with even more of a challenge with PC hardware. And I'm sure MS would try to use DX12 and Win10 to make it easier to run the game on multiple platform configurations. So long as they're not switching between Nvidia and AMD it shouldn't be that bad.

@suicidesn0wman: USB 3.0 doesn't have enough bandwidth to handle the kind of workload you're talking about. If it were just an external hard drive then fine. But if we're talking about upgraded GPU/RAM etc then nope. Maybe USB3.1 or the most current thunderbolt. But the current X1 has neither of those.

They should allow the new version to have Sata 3 so that you have the option of using an SSD properly with the console, also they should remove the disc drive to make games digital only and find a way to improve the appalling download speeds that both the consoles currently have.

If MS goes the "upgradable console" route I will ditch them so fast their heads will spin and run straight into the arms of Sony. Fact.

@boardsport311: there was a rumor that sony is thinking the same thing. and why? what is the problem when you don't have to upgrade and the new game plays on both versions? its not the n64 memory card thing where you are locked out if you don't hvae the upgrade.

so every 5 years you would rather shell out $400+ dollars and be locked out of your old games or pay $200 every 3 years and have full BC.

I would think doing the first option is downright stupid.

@bob15x: Last gen lasted 8 years, not 5. Yes I'd rather shell out $400 every 8 years than $200 every 3. Hopefully that math doesn't go over your head.

I prefer to buy a console and not have to worry about buying this or that for it, if I wanted to upgrade I'd buy a PC. That's why a console is a console, so you can buy it and be all good. If MS goes this route they are blurring the lines between console and PC, when their should be a clear distinction.

Upgrading consoles mid-gen makes no sense anyway as it usually takes devs a full gen cycle to maximize the available hardware.

So yes this is a terrible idea and I hope it fails.

Still they need to make it so we can spend the cash on our MS account to Xbox related products instead using our credit card. That's one of the things they need to consider. I have like $43 from the MS VIP points and I don't see nothing to spend it on, so I want to pimp my avatar lol but I aint gonna spend my credit card for that.

Consoles are behind though, seriously. When u here sony having 8 cores and they have to unlock the "seventh core" to get more performance. It's bad. Then ps4 players jumped up like yay! 7th core is released. I'm like wtf! This isnt naruto. If it's like that the headline should've read: sony unlocks 7th gate: Gate of wonder

@beantownsean: Which brings us back to my original point, console or PC?? Console gamers don't like all that upgrade shenanigans that PC gamers have, Microsoft just need to be confident in their product and bring us good AAA exclusives and as long as the specs are decent for a console then you shouldn't have to keep upgrading, it's one of the reasons some prefer gaming on a console over PC gaming! You didn't get my original point so I doubt this breakdown will do any good, Man you must be stupid or something.

The difference between the Turbo Duo and Segas CD was that actually NEC and HudsonSoft brought tons of CD based games for it.

I don't know how I feel about Microsoft releasing a 2nd, third, fourth...etc gen. iteration of their platform within the same console lifecycle. I personally dont see the point since they have already offloaded the vast majority of Xbox One exclusives onto the PC. I know consoles are more user friendly towards people who dont want to build their own computer and worry about gaming specs, but if consoles release upgrades of themselves multiple times in a lifecycle, I think id rather just build a nice computer and not have to worry about upgrading my Xbox.
