Pokemon Sword And Shield's Japanese Launch Event Is Cancelled

Simply because of "operational reasons."

The Pokemon Company has cancelled the Japanese launch event for Pokemon Sword and Shield that was due to take place in Tokyo next week. Lead producer Junichi Masuda, and game director Shigeru Ohmori, were both scheduled to appear at the event.

In an apologetic statement, the Pokemon Company cited "operational reasons" for the event's cancellation.

Both Masuda and Ohmori gave a round of interviews last month, with Sword and Shield's controversial lack of a National Pokedex being a hot button topic. "There were a lot of discussions about which direction we should take that in," Masuda explained in an interview with Eurogamer. "Ultimately we felt that, for the overall game, focusing on creating the richest experience we could within that game, leaving the Pokedex as we did was the best solution overall."

The angry discourse surrounding the National Pokedex's exclusion has hit a fever pitch this week as Sword and Shield leaks have begun to emerge, detailing which Pokemon would not be returning this time around. The topic has even been dubbed "#Dexit" by fans, in reference to the game's UK-inspired setting.

There's nothing suggesting fan anger led to the cancellation of Sword and Shield's Japanese launch event, but it wouldn't be the first time a scheduled event was called off due to potential threats. Square Enix was forced to cancel four Starwing Paradox tournaments earlier this year after several death threats were sent to the game's management team. A man was also arrested by Tokyo police after threatening Square Enix with an arson attack, stating that he would repeat the Kyoto Animation tragedy.

Blizzard recently cancelled an Overwatch Switch launch event in New York City, too. No official reason was given for the abrupt cancellation, but it seemed to stem from backlash the company received due to the actions it took against Hearthstone player, blitzchung, after he voiced support for the ongoing Hong Kong protests.

Pokemon Sword and Shield launches on November 15 for Nintendo Switch.

they were just stupid for giving out the list, what was the point?

i loved gale of darkness and colosseum where you could only get like 10 pokemon and even see only about 100. but it was a mystery what will happen and what will i encounter. actually i way preferred those games to any mainline games

this pokemon list is comparable to rockstar giving out a list of mission names with characters and weaponsinvolved. or from software giving a list of enemies and bosses. or so on.

if i had seen arcanine or gyarados i would have been excited. only after the late game i might have noticed that hey i havent seen any bulbasaurs. i might have then started to google online where can i find one, but i would have already completed the game and enjoyed it. but now i already know what pokemon i will encounter and what not

bad move. what did you try to gain from the list?

Has there ever been a Pokemon game where you can catch all monsters ever created (RYB-On) within a single generation?

Remember people the main audience that takes priority, are the kids. And they really dont care about having every pokemon from every game.

"There's nothing suggesting fan anger led to the cancellation of Sword and Shield's Japanese launch event, but it wouldn't be the first time a scheduled event was called off due to potential threats."

So there's "nothing suggesting" it was related to fan anger, but lets then, in the very next sentence, openly suggest that it might have been "death threats" from fans with zero evidence save for the wind whistling out your own butthole to support such a serious accusation. Ace hack reporting there, champ. Does this site even have editors anymore?

If they traded fewer Pokemon for a better game, I wouldn't have any problem with them cutting the national dex.

Instead, they traded fewer Pokemon for a NES quality curry cooking simulator.

@dancingcactus: Oh come now! They added more than just a curry cooking simulator! They also added more clothing options to their "prepubescent dress up" simulator, and added an additional mode that lets you take pictures of your 12 year old avatar in a variety of poses of your choosing! "Focusing on creating the richest experience", indeed!

On a completely unrelated note, I heard that the former Subway spokesman Jared, Pete Townshend, and the ghost of Jeff Epstein have all preordered their copies. They must REALLY like curry!

The anger about the national dex is really dumb. 99% of players dont even collect all of the pokemon.

@dacontag: You don't need to collect them all to know that cutting bulbasaur, squirtle, and every other damned starter from every previous generation save the charmander line(including the ones from the last freaking game) was a stupid, arrogant move. Why would we bother giving a damn about the NEW pokemon if new evidence suggests that we won't even get to keep them in the next game. There's nothing dumb about the anger at all. We were promised a REAL console Pokemon game, and they gave us another watered down gimmick. Worse still, it's an official generation release. If it was just another throwaway game like "Let's GO whatever" it wouldn't matter. Bait and switch is, and always will be, a garbage business practice worthy of scorn.

They f'd up and I hope it bites them in the ass.

@jerusaelem: I'm sorry this just comes off as really whiny and entitled.

Me and the vast majority of players are happy to get a new pokemon game with new pokemon to start over with. Most p the people pick up the game and capture like 50 or so pokemon that they like and beat the game.

Also this helps keep things easier to balance for the esport of pokemon because there are less pokemon in play.

@falkyn: Sure. If you like gassing yourself over numbers and pixels. But in the end, you'll just move on to the next pokemon game afterwards. It's a vicious cycle isn't it?

@evilish: for an outsider looking in, i suppose that would be your perspective. actually getting through with my name on that achievement is a worthwhile mark kept in history.

@falkyn: but if to get the “complete” dex you’d import creatures you already have in saves of other games, what is the difference between completing the 600 mon the game has versus completing the 600 mon the game has and transferring 400 more you did not catch in the game?

I mean, I can see the point of the national dex for competitive play, but for completionists it seems redundant

@MigGui: The difference is that in Sw/Sh you CAN'T transfer Pokemon in from other games. Nintendo and GF have outright said this. If the Pokemon isn't in the game now, you can't transfer it in. Period.
