Pokemon Sword And Shield Sell Big In Japan In First Week

It's a Gigantamax-sized debut for Pokemon.

Pokemon Sword and Shield are, perhaps unsurprisingly, off to a strong start in Nintendo's native Japan. According to Famitsu (via Gematsu), the pair of Pokemon games sold a combined 1.36 million retail copies within their first three days. That makes it the best-selling opening week for a Switch game in Japan, surpassing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's 1.23 million.

That number is already a strong debut, but even stronger when you consider that the figure only includes physical game copies and download codes, not digital sales directly through the Eshop. When Nintendo factors digital sales, as well as those from other territories, it's bound to grow substantially.

Those strong sales make it likely to appear on a future edition of Nintendo's all-time sales charts. Pokemon games tend to make appearances on those charts. Currently Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee occupy the #5 spot for all-time Switch software sales, with 11.28 million units. For a look at how dominant Pokemon can be, though, the 3DS chart shows a Pokemon game occupying three of the top five, bested only by Mario Kart 7.

If you've picked up Pokemon, be sure to claim your free monsters while you can. Plus check out our guides to Gigantamax Pokemon and Eevee evolutions.

"In collecting, battling, and exploring, Sword and Shield cut out the bloat and focus on what makes these pillars of the Pokemon games so captivating in the first place," Kallie Plagge wrote in GameSpot's review. "You're not held back by overly complicated back-end systems or hoops to jump through; from the outset, you can start wandering the Galar region, seeing its new Pokemon, and trying out its new battle strategies with very little in your way. This leaves you free to enjoy what Pokemon is all about, and that makes for an incredibly strong showing for the series' proper debut on Switch."

I bought Pokémon Shield and myself as well and my kids love it. I honestly don’t understand what the people who are whining and crying are talking about. This is a great Pokémon game and a great start for future, real Pokémon games on consoles. It’s long overdue.

@ZIMdoom: because it’s a multi billion dollar franchise and this game has less polish by far than Pokemon lets go . . . Plus the devs lied on their reasoning for why but I’m guessing idiots at the top wanted it out quickly for the holiday season

It’s also a smack in the face of devs whose games don’t sell well but put more polish and effort into their games but oh well just consume don’t expect better from the people who should be leading by example eh

@uchihasilver: none of that means anything and your feeling a of personal slight are meaningless. Meaningless to the audience these games are for, meaningless to people who have wanted this game on consoles for years and meaningless considering its selling huge and people are loving it. The game is good and deserves support. To argue otherwise is just whiny feelings being put ahead of actual reality.

@ZIMdoom: actually feeling the need to support half baked products is the whiny feeling you are putting forward . . . I couldn’t care less I’m just pointing out the truth user reviews would say otherwise to people enjoying it and loving it but oh well keep defending those multi billion dollar corporations bro

Oh and there’s a difference between wanting a console version and wanting it done right . . . Again we got a console Pokemon with lets go which was far superior in almost every aspect and just to make things clear I don’t care about the national dex I always use new Pokemon because what’s the point in playing it if you don’t? Sure it’s nice to have them all but meh I’m talking about general polish and the likes he’ll there are literally pictures showing ocarina of time N64 has better tree textures . . .

For reference of how a switch game should look take a look at Mario odyssey or breath of the wild =/

@uchihasilver: whatever you say champ. You can’t gaslight me. Reviews for Sword/Shield are better than Let’s Go. So objectively you are wrong about which is better. I honestly couldn’t care less about your take or your whining. You don’t like the game, don’t buy it. Easy. Problem solved. The tons of people who will buy it and enjoy it will be more than happy with the product as reviews have said. But please keep ranting about corporations lying and pretending nobody can honestly enjoy the game because you feel the tree textures aren’t up to par. If there is one thing everyone really truly cares about in their Pokémon games it’s tree textures.

@ZIMdoom: as I said not whining I couldn’t care less xD I just understand people’s issues with it I’m not blinded by fanboyism also you mean critic reviews are better? By that logic every call of duty is a master piece and halo master chief collection worked perfectly on launch xD but keep telling yourself a franchise bigger than Disney can’t do a million times better

@uchihasilver: I never said it couldn’t be better. I said myself and my kids love it and I don’t understand the people who are complaining. Just like how I don’t understand why you are complaining because I’ve played the game and it’s really good. But using “it could be better” as an excuse to complain is ignorant. It’s called making the perfect the enemy of the good. I also think people need to come into this not as the 37th Pokémon game, but the first real Pokémon game for consoles. Which it is. And it will likely only continue to grow and get better from here. But silly me, acting like and adult instead of just crapping on everything and complaining like a “real gamer”.

@ZIMdoom: I’m starting to think you are just a teenager since you have no idea what ignorant actually means . . . For instance you are being ignorant to the glaring issues the game has why? “Cus Pokemon” is why . . . And no you are not acting like an adult you are literally acting like a child getting upset that people have genuine issues with a game made by the most profitable franchise ever made one of the best selling games ever made not making an effort I’m not trying to downplay you have enjoyed it by all means do so that’s up to you but Jesus Christ stop acting like you own the damn company it’s pathetic how gamers rush to aid these companies that couldn’t give a crap lol

@uchihasilver: wow, are you ok? I can’t believe how triggered you are over the idea other people may genuinely enjoy a game. You are so mad right now that this game is doing well and literally just trying to gaslight all the people who are having lots of fun with it. All I posted is The game is great and I don’t understand the people who are whining and crying...and you’ve now come at me multiple times, making baseless allegations, Flat-out denying objective facts, desperately twisting everything I say and putting words in my mouth. Yep, seems like a grown up having a perfectly normal one all right. Oh, and while we are talking about definitions for words, I suggest you look at an actual dictionary for the word “ignorant”. It has more than one single narrow meaning. But you won’t, of course, because it’s pretty clear you have some other motive here other than rational discussion. Good luck to you and get well soon. I have no interest in wasting my time with you.

@ZIMdoom: lmao triggered? Hardly as I said you can enjoy the game I also enjoyed the game I just don’t feign ignorance on glaring issues the games have but okay and exactly what objective facts have I denied? That the game has an awful user score? Why would I take critics seriously when it comes to Nintendo they rated hyrule warriors very high despite always giving the actual musou series bad scores xD literally GameSpot’s used “Zelda skin” as a pro But either way I’m not angry more amused by how much people defend something that has no right to be defended as I said you can enjoy the game and you are more than welcome to buy it no one can stop you but that also doesn’t mean you shouldn’t bring up the issues it has or excuse them it’s not that hard of a concept and I also wasn’t making an accusation I was merely pointing out the way you staunchly defend this game does not make you come across as an adult it’s more a child’s attitude that’s normally a trait of Sony or Xbox fanboys on the extreme ends

@uchihasilver: yes, someone saying “I think the game is great and I don’t understand what the whining and crying is about” is a fanboy but the person who responds with “they lied and you are just desperately defending billionaire lying corporations because you think this game is perfect!!!!” Is the sane one? Seriously, what are you even talking about anymore? You felt the need to get angry and prissy. You responded to ME and kept on doing so despite my reasonable responses defending myself. And now you insist on getting the last word in rather than just accepting you were in the wrong and acted irrationally. Sorry, but that isn’t normal behaviour. You are either triggered or trolling and neither is defensible.

You keep accusing me of all kinds of BS. And you can keep pretending that the “user reviews” are a fair measurement but they aren’t. Sorry. I don’t care what the medium is - games, movies, etc- user reviews are garbage 9 times out of 10 and are prone to far more bias, fanboyism, “feels over reals” and misleading and misrepresentation than critic reviews. Like it or not, this is fact. I’ve played about 10 hours or more of shield so far and honestly haven’t noticed any of the issues the bad user reviews claim. That is the truth. So IF they are there and as bad as these users claim, I haven’t noticed so they clearly aren’t major. Neither have the actual game critics as not one review I’ve read yet has mentioned them. I will trust the actual critics over anonymous Internet loudmouths any day. And anyone who unironically bashes critic reviews while believing user reviews are more accurate representation of a product clearly has no clue how reviews work or what their purpose is.

But here is the best and most genuine question I can leave you with. The “user” score on meta critic for this game is 3. Seriously...3. Do you honestly think this game is a 3? I mean, you support the user score so much, you must think this game is a 3 or basically borderline broken garbage. Is this your position? Is this the wise and totally NOT ignorant scores you are willing to defend as accurate and reasonable rating of the game?

@ZIMdoom: Lol you say I’m angry yet you are the one who got angry for me giving you the reason people are upset? As for the 3 you realise devs rarely listen until they are review bombed while I don’t agree with people giving 0’s or 10’s for that matter since both are usually lies we are talking about devs who had every opportunity to delay and finish the game properly but chose not to because god forbid they miss the holiday season even though they outright confirmed they knew people weren’t happy we are talking about two companies here Nintendo of which constantly boast how they delay games to make sure they are done properly (of which they own a fairly large stake in Pokemon shares)

As for you not noticing these issues it’s because you are ignorant to them from missing backgrounds to poor animations and awful textures huge amounts of pop in and everything in between

And again I’ll point out critic reviews you so love give CoD every year huge scores including this year when people have complained to no end how broken that games multiplayer is or when every site was plastered with master chief collection ads prior to its release and many have it 7+ scores despite the multiplayer not working at all and the campaign being broken with crashes and much more hell people were confused as to why days gone on this very site got a poor review since the review sounded over harsh for people then then notice the reviewer on twitter ranting about “white zombies” and complaining about parts of the game which is from genuine biker culture

But again you say I’m angry but like I said you can buy the game and you can enjoy it that’s your personal opinion you were the one talking about my “personal slight” it wasn’t my personal slight it was what the fan base has issues with at no point have I said you can’t enjoy it I’m not the one trying to mock and disregard people’s opinions I enjoyed the game but again doesn’t mean I haven’t seen or understood others issues but keep thinking I’m angry xD because I point out facts the only one who’s argued with personal feelings is you . . . And yes pokemon will sell well it always will because parents buy it for children so people will review bomb because they certainly can’t outvote the masses of parents with their wallets unfortunately I’m not angry at anyone I just don’t agree with dismissing a large amount of a player base because of personal feels

I’d even argue outrage sometimes is good for gaming as a whole battlefront 2 would have still been pay to win we wouldn’t have likely gotten Jedi fallen order, FF XIV would have still been a dumpster fire, anthem is supposedly getting redone etc. People will complain because they care about a given franchise no one wants to see pokemon fail we want them to do better the previous console Pokemon titles were vastly superior to what was on handheld (coliseum and xD gale) so why isn’t this one? You cannot genuinely tell me sword and shield are by far better than X and Y, ruby and sapphire remakes and sun and moon? Because feature wise and everything they are pretty much equivalent with the only real difference being the dex cut

As for the national dex honestly they probably should have just cut the whole thing and had a fresh new 150 or son pokemon as if a clean slate for this first outing at least and it probably wouldn’t have been as big a deal but who knows

@uchihasilver: no, I’m getting angry because you continue to try and gaslight me, misrepresent literally everything I say, lie and make false accusations toward me. And your endless responses are nothing but goalpost moving, ignorant apologetics with absolutely zero logical consistency and therefore are nothing but bad faith arguements. Clearly your only objective here is to crap on the game and people who like it solely for the sake of your own perceived victimhood.

But fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. I said I was done and made the mistake of assuming you could be reasoned with. Clearly I should have known better. I’m done.

@ZIMdoom: how am I trying to gaslight you xD again not even trying to crap on the game I enjoyed it doesn’t mean to say it doesn’t have issues also victimhood? I’m just having a conversation dude O_o I think you might be looking into this more than you should doesn’t bother me wether the game does well or not clearly people wanted the game I’m just hoping more than anything this backlash pushes them to do better next time how is that a bad thing also what exactly am I lying about? Like I said I only pointed out the issue not sure why you got so hung up on it

Just goes to show that you can cut corners and lie to your fans but they will still buy it.
