Following the announcement of Pokemon Sun and Moon's starter Pokemon, The Pokemon Company today revealed the Legendary creatures that will appear in the game.

These powerful Pokemon are called Solgaleo and Lunala, and The Pokemon Company teased today that they will play a "crucial role" in the story. Solgaleo's signature move is called Sunsteel Strike, and it's an attack that "charges at an opponent with the force of a meteor." As for Lunala, its signature Moongeist Beam attack shoots out an "ominous beam of light."

You can see Solgaleo and Lunala in action in the video above. Additionally, full descriptions for both are available at the bottom of this post.

The Pokemon Company also shared some further general details about Pokemon Sun and Moon today. The game is set in the Alola region, which "centers around four tropical islands and one artificial island."

The story picks up after the hero moves to the region. You can play as a male or female, while you can also name your character and customize its appearance.

"Professor Kukui is the Alola region's Pokemon professor. The professor is passionate about his research into Pokemon moves and has sometimes taken direct hits from Pokemon if there was something to be learned from it," reads a line from the description. "Sporting a white lab coat, Professor Kukui has his own unique style."

Additionally, a "mysterious girl" named Lillie will assist the professor. "She's not fond of making Pokemon fight in battles, but she loves reading and has read a great number of books," reads the description. She will apparently play a big role in the game.

Another new character is Hau, who is described as a "Pokemon-loving young boy with a big appetite. He has a real weakness for malasadas, a famous treat in the Alola region, and is always in search of malasada shops. Hau is a big-hearted boy who really loves Pokemon."

The Pokemon Company also confirmed today that Pokemon Sun and Moon will include QR scanner functionality to register Pokemon and find new ones.

Additionally, Pokemon Sun and Moon will apparently be featured in Nintendo's Treehouse Live event at E3 later this month, according to the Pokemon website.

Pokemon Sun and Moon are due to launch on November 18 for 3DS. The last mainline games were Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, which came out in November 2014.

Also launching this year is Pokemon Go, a free-to-play mobile game that lets you catch Pokemon in the real world.

Pokemon Sun/Moon Legendaries:

  • Category: Sunne Pokémon
  • Height: 11'02"
  • Weight: 507.1 lbs.
  • Type: Psychic/Steel
  • Ability: Full Metal Body

"Honored as an emissary of the sun since ancient times, Solgaleo is referred to with reverence as 'the beast that devours the sun.' Solgaleo's body holds a vast amount of energy, and it shines with light when it is active. It has a flowing mane with a remarkable resemblance to the sun.

Its signature move is Sunsteel Strike, an attack that charges at an opponent with the force of a meteor, disregarding the target's Ability. Solgaleo's Ability is Full Metal Body, a new Ability that no previous Pokemon has had. With the Full Metal Body Ability, a Pokemon's stats will not be lowered by the effects of an opponent’s moves or Ability."

  • Category: Moone Pokémon
  • Height: 13'01"
  • Weight: 264.6 lbs.
  • Type: Psychic/Ghost
  • Ability: Shadow Shield

"Since ancient times, Lunala has been honored as an emissary of the moon. Referred to with reverence as 'the beast that calls the moon,' Lunala is constantly absorbing light and converting it into energy. With its wings spread to absorb the surrounding light and glittering like the crescent moon, it resembles a beautiful night sky.

Lunala's signature Moongeist Beam attack releases an ominous beam of light that disregards the target's Ability. Lunala's Ability is Shadow Shield, a new Ability that no previous Pokemon has had. With the Shadow Shield Ability, a Pokemon will take less damage from an attack that lands when the Pokemon has full HP."

Solgaleo looks awesome. So hype for this game!

The new legendaries seem like they could be interesting...and the new Pokedex can talk too! I don't think we've had talking Pokemon since the first gen, and for the first time ever, the professor is our own relative. The new games seem promising enough, so November can't come any faster.

I lol'ed at "a new Ability that no previous Pokemon has had": Full Metal Body = Clear Body & Shadow Shield = Multiscale. Those abilities already existed, they just renamed them.

@DarkNeoBahamut: You're mostly right, but things actually look even worse than that. These abilities are possibly nerfed versions of the ones you mentioned. Full Metal Body prevents stats lowering as a result of attacks, but not from other sources, meaning that Solgaleo can still suffer the effect of Intimidate. As for Shadow Shield, the description we have doesn't say how much the damage is reduced, so we can't say for sure if it's the same thing as Multiscale, but it may be a nerfed version of it as well.

I like the looks of the legendaries, but I can't unsee zigzagoon's face being on the sun legendary.

I was speculating that Lunala might be Dark/Flying type Pokemon and Solgaleo Fire/something but seeing them both are Psychic type Pokemon is okay I guess but I would've expected to go with something radical types this time around but hey, I'm cool with both Legionaries being Psychics and one being Ghost and the other being Steel.
