Pokemon Sets Sales Record, Again
The latest Game Boy Color titles, Pokemon Gold and Silver, smash US sales records.
The new Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver cartridges have broken the previous North American record for total game software sales in the first week of availability. Combined, the two carts have sold 1.4 million copies in a mere seven days. The previous record was held the games' predecessor, Pokémon Yellow, which sold 600,000 copies in its first week. Nintendo feels that this is only the tip of the iceberg, and it has projected sales of 10 million units in less than six months' time.
"There's no question about it - kids love to play Pokémon. The best-selling game for any handheld video game system is Pokémon Yellow for the Game Boy Color," said Peter Main, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Nintendo of America.
Each cartridge can be purchased for US$29.99. In their first week alone, Pokémon Gold and Silver have generated nearly US$41 million in revenue for Nintendo.
