Considering 12 years have passed since Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire were released on Game Boy Advance, graphical improvements are to be expected from their upcoming 3DS remakes, Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. But if, like me, you haven't seen Ruby or Sapphire recently, you might not realize just how much of a change the games' visuals have undergone by simply looking at screenshots of the 3DS versions.

Luckily, Reddit user YouDontKnowThisUser has compiled a comparison of three dozen screenshots that pit the 3DS remakes against very similar (if not identical) scenes from the original games, which you can see below. The most significant change, of course, is the shift from the sprite-based 2D graphics of the older Pokemon games to the 3D-graphic style introduced in Pokemon X and Y.

The gameplay is similarly not being left untouched: a new type of evolution is being introduced called Primal Reversion, new mega evolutions have been added, and players will now be able to design their own secret bases that can be shared through StreetPass.

Alpha Ruby and Omega Sapphire are scheduled for release on November 21. If you plan on picking up the game, which version will you choose? Let us know in the comments.

This is going to be my very first ever Pokemon game!! I'm so excited!!!!

Avatar image for RSM-HQ

This is probably my most wanted handheld game at the moment :) Kirby was great but doesn't keep you on the device like Animal Crossing or Pokemon >_<

Flannery is still a hottie but ya know...they could of improved the visuals on the 3DS well over 3 times better. They obviously have no issues hitting gamecube levels on the 3Ds so why aren't they?

I love pokemon and i will be getting this but still.

Looks good. Can still play the original Pokemon games all the way back to Blue for hours and hours on end though so not something I'd be directly interested in but still quite good how far the Nintendo Handhelds have come.

"Would you kindly" everytimes I read that makes me think of Bioshock.

Avatar image for ArchoNils2

Looks great, looking forward to it :)

This looks really good :D I don't think it would be practical, but I'd love the ability to switch between the old graphics and the new graphics, a la Halo Anniversary.

Avatar image for daikkenaurora12

looks nice. Another reason to get the 3DS or 2DS.

It's funny that these very same "outdated" graphics gave the first revamp a Pokemon generation ever had with Fire Red and Leaf Green....

The first cycle is finally completing.

Avatar image for bluedeathking

don't know why when they remake a generation they do two games instead of one big awesome one. For example imagine if they combine Red, Green, and Blue in one game where you can have all the original 151 Pokémon in one game and call it Pokémon Primary (hence primary colors).

<< LINK REMOVED >> Because its DLC in disguise

<< LINK REMOVED >> But then how will they sell multiple copies to the same people?

Avatar image for meatz666

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> With pokebank and market, it's stupid to buy multiple copies of pokemon.

Avatar image for mwmike11

Can I just have these games now??

Avatar image for yellowsanchez

they did well on the revamp

I didn't notice before, but based on the doors behind Sidney and Phoebe in these images it looks like OR/AS kept the original, linear elite four rather than the any-order elite four from Gen V and X/Y. Personally, I'm glad they haven't changed that.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well spotted.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not much of a fan of the camera views in gen 6. It's harder to see what's around you without the more direct top-down view...

Avatar image for wizardjenkins

I totally agree. I prefer the original top-down viewing angle to this new one.

I know they had to make this change in order to show off their new 3D character/environment models, but I'm not a fan of those either :/

Avatar image for guydude3412

Looks awesome. It has inspired me to go back to Y

Avatar image for Legend002

Hope Smash U doesn't come out on the same day as this. That would be way too overwhelming.

Avatar image for svaubel

Even though it is using the X/Y graphics that is still damn impressive. Finally get to play the version I spent the least time with.

Avatar image for Too-DementeD

<< LINK REMOVED >> Same here. Not counting Pokémon Black 2/White 2 which I never owned (wanted them to be on 3DS), Gen 3 games are the ones I spent time on the least. I owned at least one game from every generation except Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald because it took me a while to get a GBA, which by the time I got one, I couldn't care less for Pokémon. Before that, I played the heck out of Red and then Silver, but ultimately stopped playing for four or so years until I got the VBA emulator... and then played Ruby just a bit on my old laptop. A year or two later, I decided to get a DS and Pokémon Diamond on it's launch day, and it rekindled my love of the series. Bought nearly every game since.

Honestly can't wait for OR/AS since I regret not owning them. It's been a long time coming for me to get around playing 'em properly.

Avatar image for wizardjenkins

I'm almost in the same exact boat. I played the 3rd gen, but could not get into it as much.

Adored the first 2, 4th gen brought me back, 5th gen pushed me away and now the 6th gen has me kind of in between.

Avatar image for freedom01

very impressive

Avatar image for starfox15

Deep breath... GEN. 6. MOVE. TUTORS.

That is all.

Seriously though, Nintendo basically needs to open the door to the massive opportunities for it's pokemon. Some got a massive boost with move tutors, but they are locked in BW2 Hell and can't be used in Gen 6 tournaments. I'll still be buying Ruby just because I really love what they've done with the Gen 6 engine on 3DS, but please make more pokemon viable by giving us move tutors.

Avatar image for cboye18

I just hope they don't mess the soundtrack up. Hoenn region had IMO the best soundtrack in the whole series; I especially liked the rival battle theme, Elite 4 and Legendary battle music. Pokemon music went down the drain after the Gameboy Advance games.

Hopefully they don't mess this up with too much orchestra and no drumming.

Avatar image for Aquat1cF1sh

<< LINK REMOVED >> Agreed! The Hoenn soundtrack is phenomenal. Really looking forward to what it's going to sound like. Maybe there will be an option to listen to the old soundtrack in the game, similar to in HeartGold/SoulSilver.

Avatar image for delete-easycomeeasygo

Most impressive Gamespot, but I do hope Gamefreak will fix Ruby/Sapphire which was lacking from Advance such as the day N night cycle, more features this time, and more Pokemon. Nevertheless, I only play Ruby 2 times back on Advance only because I was letdown from Advance what it had to offer and I got no problem buying it again on my 3DS XL.

Avatar image for seven7swords

To be honest Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald look just like Black/White/BW2. Sprite tech really doesn't change much when it comes to Pokemon. :/

Avatar image for ccgod

OMG I want :( someone give me a 3DS lol

Avatar image for derspy700

<< LINK REMOVED >> You STILL don't have one? bro r u srs

Avatar image for delete-easycomeeasygo

I would give you my old 3DS model but I'm saving that for my Daughter if she ask about having her own Handheld so sorry. The least I can do is give you a like :-)
