Pokemon Live-Action TV Show In Early Development At Netflix From Lucifer Writer - Report

Netflix and The Pokemon Company are working together on a new live-action Pokemon TV series, according to sources speaking to Variety. The production is said to be "in its early days" and it is not confirmed at this stage. The project is described as being near the beginning of development, not production, so it's not a done deal by any stretch, it seems.

As such, there is no word yet on the plot, cast, or release date. However, it's reported that Joe Henderson (11.12.63, Lucifer) is boarding the project to writer and be an executive producer.

Variety's report said the new Pokemon series would be similar to the 2019 movie Detective Pikachu, which blended live-action with CGI elements to bring the pocket monsters to life. The film, which starred Ryan Reynolds and Justice Smith, was an enormous success, becoming the highest-grossing video game movie in US history until Sonic dethroned it.

Netflix and Henderson did not write back to Variety when approached for comment. GameSpot has contacted The Pokemon Company in an attempt to get more details.

Netflix and Pokemon are already tied together, as the streaming company currently hosts Pokemon: Indigo League and Pokemon Journeys in the US. It would also be just the latest video game franchise getting spun into a film or TV show for Netflix, following Netflix's deals with Ubisoft for Far Cry, Splinter Cell, The Division, and Assassin's Creed content. Netflix also just announced its first major foray into gaming.
