Pokemon Sword And Shield Crown Tundra DLC: New Legendaries, Features, And Everything We Know

Pokemon Sword and Shield's Isle of Armor DLC released back in June, and now their second expansion is finally here. The Crown Tundra, the second part of Sword and Shield's Expansion Pass, went live on October 22, and it introduced another wealth of new content to the games, including a new area to explore, a bunch of new and returning Pokemon to catch, and more.

Like Isle of Armor, The Crown Tundra is a sizable chunk of add-on content featuring its own storyline, cast of characters, and Pokedex to complete, as well as new gameplay modes, items, and other additions. To help get you up to speed on the DLC, we've rounded up everything you need to know about Sword and Shield's Crown Tundra expansion below.

Release Date And Time

The Crown Tundra released on October 22, roughly four months after Sword and Shield's first expansion, The Isle of Armor. The Pokemon Home service also received its own corresponding update on October 22 to make it compatible with the DLC's new Pokemon.

Expansion Pass Price

The Crown Tundra is included in the Pokemon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass alongside the games' previous DLC, The Isle of Armor. The Expansion Pass costs $30 USD / £27. The expansions cannot be purchased individually, and each version of the game requires its own corresponding Expansion Pass to access the DLC.

If you've yet to pick up the base games or the DLC, Nintendo is releasing new editions of Pokemon Sword and Shield on November 6 that bundle in their respective Expansion Pass.

Purchase Bonus

Players who purchase a Sword Expansion Pass or Shield Expansion Pass will receive a couple of bonus clothing items for their in-game character: an exclusive Pikachu uniform and an Eevee uniform. Those who pick up one of the newly announced Expansion Pass bundles will get an additional 100 Poke Balls as bonus on top of that.

Confirmed Returning Pokemon

Much like The Isle of Armor, The Crown Tundra introduces a variety of old Pokemon to the Gen 8 Pokedex. These monsters are being added as free updates, so you don't need to own the Expansion Pass to get them; you'll be able to receive the Pokemon through trades or import them via Pokemon Home even if you don't pick up the DLC. However, the returning Pokemon can only be encountered in the wild if you own the Expansion Pass.

In total, more than 200 old monsters in total are being added between the two expansions, including every Legendary Pokemon from previous games. You can see all the returning Pokemon in each expansion below.

New Pokemon

In addition to the returning monsters, developer Game Freak has introduced some new Pokemon to Sword and Shield with each expansion. We've gotten a glimpse at a handful of new monsters coming in The Crown Tundra, including the DLC's flagship Legendary, Calyrex--a Psychic/Grass Pokemon that is said to have ruled the Galar region in ancient times. As part of your expedition, you'll need to reunite Calyrex with its loyal steed.

Calyrex isn't the only new Legendary coming in The Crown Tundra; the expansion also introduces Galarian forms of Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. Galarian Articuno is a Psychic/Flying type that can freeze opponents with a new Psychic-type move called Freezing Glare. Galarian Zapdos is a Fighting/Flying type capable of learning a new attack called Thunderous Kick. Finally, Galarian Moltres is a Dark/Flying type that can unleash an attack called Fiery Wrath.

Two new Regis have been introduced in The Crown Tundra as well: Regieleki and Regidrago. Regieleki is an Electric-type Legendary, and its signature attack is called Thunder Cage. This move traps opponents, dealing damage every turn and preventing them from switching out. Regidrago, meanwhile, is a Dragon type. It has a unique Ability called Dragon's Maw, and its signature attack, Dragon Energy, inflicts greater damage the more HP Regidrago has.

In addition to the new Legendaries, The Crown Tundra introduces another new regional variant: Galarian Slowking. It's not yet clear how it evolves, but like Galarian Slowbro, it's a Psychic/Poison type. It also has a unique Ability called Curious Medicine, which resets an ally Pokemon's stats when Galarian Slowking enters the field.

New Features And Items

A handful of new features and items are coming as part of the Crown Tundra expansion, including a new co-op mode called Dynamax Adventures, wherein you and up to three other players can explore Pokemon dens together. You can read more about some of the announced new features and items below.

Dynamax Adventures

One of the headlining new features in The Crown Tundra is Dynamax Adventures, a co-op mode in which a team of four trainers sets off to explore Max Raid dens. Each player will choose a team of rental Pokemon to bring with them before the expedition begins. As the squad delves deeper into the den, you'll need to choose which branching pathways to take and battle any Dynamax Pokemon you encounter along the way.

Galarian Star Tournament

After you've reached a certain point in The Crown Tundra's story, you'll be able to participate in the Galarian Star Tournament, a new 2v2 competition featuring all the Gym Leaders and other major NPCs from the main game and expansions. You'll choose an AI partner when you enter the tournament and face off against a series of other teams in two-on-two Multi Battles.

Ability Patch

One of the most exciting new items being introduced in The Crown Tundra is the Ability Patch, which lets you change a Pokemon's Ability to its Hidden Ability. Given how rare it typically is to find a Pokemon with its Hidden Ability, this is a very helpful addition to the series, but The Pokemon Company teases that the Ability Patch will be "hard to come by."
