Pokemon Go Might Finally Have Hit Its Peak Number of Users in the US

The mighty hasn't fallen, but it might've plateaued.

Pokemon Go is a cultural sensation, and it had a better first week in terms of downloads on iOS devices than any other iOS app in history. It seemed like it would never slow down--but according to new data from survey company SurveyMonkey, the app might have finally reached its peak number of users, at least in the US.

SurveyMonkey published a bunch of data from surveys it had conducted, and it appears that downloads of the app have tapered off and plateaued. While its first week saw a huge spike in downloads, the influx of new users has not surprisingly slowed since then. To reach this conclusion, the company looked at three different data sets: daily active users, downloads, and Google search frequency.

No Caption Provided

As you can see from the graph of active users that SurveyMonkey compiled, people are beginning to stop using the app. From a peak of over 25 million active users, there are now just over 20 million. To be clear, this is still an absurd number of users, and the app is downloaded on an incredible number of iPhone and Android devices. But the data suggests that Pokemon Go, even though it is a mobile juggernaut, still is affected by normal app usage trends.

Of course, the Google search stats reinforce just how massive the Pokemon Go phenomenon is. While they also corroborate the plateau, a comparison between "Pokemon Go" and other popular terms like "Trump," "Taylor Swift," and "Battlefield" shows just how pervasive the game is in popular culture right now.

Also, take this decline with a grain of salt, because it only counts US users. With Pokemon Go having just launched in Japan, it's unlikely that it'll truly lose its popularity any time soon.

The mobile app has spawned a wide variety of bizarre stories around the world, which you can read about here.

As someone pointed out, the game becomes boring quite fast since there are so few battles options and the battle itself is terryble, involving only taps and wipes. Also Niantics is terrible in public relations and just shuts itself up. Geez, I've seen dictatorships being more communative and public friendly than Niantics! Well, it was nice while it lasted. Bye, pokégo. Right now I'm just wainting for august 9th to say "hello there, no man's sky"!

I searched, I downloaded, I played. its alright. I do understand why some have found themselves in places they shouldn't be, if the pokemon is at the bottom of the screen you have to get close other wise every time I tapped to catch it would instead open one of the three tabs at the bottom of the screen. and my battery went from 85% to 32% within the hour.......

don't see why people have dedicated their life to it though.

i still play it but noticed this last weekend it began to lose it's luster. Tired of seeing the crap Pokemon pop up all the time and don't even bother at this point. I'm level 12 and can't even take a gym yet. Some of the people i'm sure are paying good money to power up their Pokemon to remain on top.

I see myself slowly opening the app less and less. it's to be expected though. Same thing happened to me with Clash of Clans and Clash Royale.

Well that's usually how fads work and that's all this game is; A fad. Hopefully it will die. As a Pokemon game, this game is terrible. Minus the social and workout aspects that is. Those are the only good things.

--it really does help give an idea of how many console gamers exist in the US
--hardcore gamers
--it always seems around 35,000,000
--dedicated 'real' hard core gamers
--but
--i know it might hurt some gamer's feelings
--but
--if you didnt ever buy a wiiU
--you have to mix a little soft into your "hardcore" title

People wanted to see what all the hubub was about and only then realized it really not all that special and uninstalled it. My guess is that the total will drop about 25% and the rest will be die hards playing the game. But hey if you enjoy a game then thats just fine, have fun with it, go outside and catch em. Jammin

~this seems silly. Obviously it was going to decline eventually. What'd we expect, that the user base would continue to rise indefinitely?

So what this chart is telling me is that over 20 million people in the US alone is playing this. This number is half of PS4s global userbase. Matches the X1 userbase. In the US alone. Sorry I can't see it as a bad thing.

@bunchanumbers: Apples and oranges comparison...

Android Users in US: 95 million, Apple Users: 50 million...a total of 145 million. Thats a much larger install base.

@kyelo: So what you're telling me is that at one point 1 in 6 ios/android users in the US were playing this on a daily basis? That is very impressive.

@bunchanumbers:
--i mean
--it is obvious you are a bit of a nintendo fanboy(and thats fine)
--i have never doubted nitentendo's success(a brand that will exist LONG after xbox and playstation are long gone)
--but for me personally
--nothing sickens my gut more than seeing a fanboy pointlessly drool and gloat(over a massive victory)
--when they have already won the battle

--it is like seeing ps4 fanboys buy xb1s and use them for skeet practice(at a xbox convention)
--you know
--because xb1 didnt sell
--and so they have basically been giving em away

Of course it's declining. The tracking has been broken for the past week. A few minutes ago I would've left the house to find that rihorn that was nearby, but knowing that the tracker is broken, I didn't bother.

@neowarrior793: There's has yet to be an official word from the devs. Nevertheless, the feature is still present within the game and it indeed does not work.

@SexyJazzCat: Or that its a shitty overly generic game with a large brand attached to it....then people are realizing that what they sold to us isn't what we dreamed of. You can sell an idea, but you can't navigate the narrative without people exaggerating the idea to fit their ideals. Thats the problem with dream selling. Its not going to execute well in the long run but you can do well with the hype in the beginning. Plus, whatever good things come from it in the beginning, even if its a terrible game once you look at it without a fanboy bias or popular culture control.

@sbnewsom: Not sure I'd totally agree with you, or be that harsh :), but I understand the point you're trying to make, it's not really a great game. Some of the Gamespot staff have expressed that same opinion.

@sbnewsom: I only got to level 8 and you can call it generic and shitty all you want but it's fun to play. It gets people out of their houses with their friends. If it was shitty it would not be doing this well. You just seem to be on the "Hate the fad" bandwagon. Maybe it isn't your thing but the game is far from shitty.

@sbnewsom: I'm sorry, but a shitty overly generic game isn't going to incite a stampede in Santa Monica Pier or Central Park.
