Pokemon Go Has Reportedly Made $14M Already

"Chances are we are looking at the mobile games’ equivalent of a summer hit song."

Pokemon Go is estimated to have generated $14 million since its launch began on July 5, according to research company SuperData. It notes that this figure puts it ahead of all the other Pokemon mobile titles such as Pokemon Shuffle Mobile, which launched in August 2015. Additionally, Pokemon Go has already outperformed developer Niantic's last game, Ingress.

One of the key challenges highlighted for Pokemon Go going forward is keeping players engaged. SuperData suggests that the game may not maintain its momentum and suffer a drop-off in interest.

Now Playing: Pokemon Go - Ponyta and Rattata Loose in San Francisco

"Just like every other mobile game it will have to face the retention figures after 7, 30, and 90 days," reads its report. "Chances are we are looking at the mobile games’ equivalent of a summer hit song rather than a revolution in the mobile game monarchy."

Currently, Pokemon Go is only available in the US, Australia, and New Zealand. According to "people familiar with plans for the game" the game will launch in Europe, Japan, and other Asian nations "within a few days."

Pokemon Go's release has also reportedly made a big impact on Nintendo's business outlook, with shares of the company rising 25 percent in Tokyo. This translates to $9 billion worth of market capitalization, boosting Nintendo's total market cap to almost $28 billion.

Niantic Labs has laid out some of its plans for new Pokemon Go features coming in the future. These include a trading system and improvements to AR.

Other reports have said Pokemon Go is now bigger than Tinder in the US and is closing in on Twitter when it comes to daily active users.

Gimmicky but I can see the future. The future for this game would be that there will be a graphics overhaul for the pokemon. They'll be interactive with the touch screen and you can send them to battle other players you come across. The fights will be in real time and you'll be able to see the pokemon go at it as they use their abilities to win. It's only a matter of time till they get that to look right.

Of course it's a fad, people will lose excitement eventually and it will quiet down. They'll only bring people back by releasing new Pokemon to catch and good enough combat and whatnot, as it is right now it won't last.

And Nintendo was so reluctant to enter the smartphone market. Maybe these results will give them the confidence to develop more for smartphones as part of their main platforms and bring Zelda and Mario games to it.

There will be things that keep Go strong. adding trading and vs battles. plus releasing other pokemon and don't forget legendary pokemon. If they want it they could ride this for years.

I think this says everything. Nintendo should become a software company

I will never buy a Nintendo console. I will buy their games though. Their hardware sucks but their games are still tops.

Put Zelda on PS4 and there would be no one who could stop them.

I think this says everything. Keep on envious of their games you will never play.... it won't change a thing.

@metallinatus: No it won't. I haven't played most Nintendo games since the N64 and I couldn't care less.

That doesn't mean I want them to fall into obscurity though. Which they inevitably will if they carry on making failed consoles.

I mean everyone says the Wii was a success because it sold a lot, yet it was the most half arsed neglected console in the history of gaming. Most people I know who had one only used it at Christmas when family was over. Most of them wondered why they even bothered to buy it in the first place.

Why even buy a Wii, then?

@metallinatus: That was the thing about the Wii though, it got loads of people who normally don't care about video games (or grew out of them) to buy one. When you look around gaming sites and see comments being made by people like us, it's easy to think that all those franchises are loved or at least well known by the masses, but the reality is very different.

Among those masses of Wii buyers you might be surprised how many of them have even heard of Smash Bros., or how many of them maybe know the name Zelda but don't care about it or buy it, etc., Metroid is the worst one :). Mario is the big one that many people would know, but even then there are lots of Wii owners who never bought a single game and just played Wii Sports.

@metallinatus: Well they must like Nintendo games or they wouldn't have bought a Wii in the first place. It is just, considering how many people bought a Wii you'd think a few more of them would have actually played the thing.

From what a few people told me I'd be surprised if their total play time on the console was more than 100 hours. They spent less time playing on the console in total than I have some games.

@dexda: Or they could make a console with enough power that they get 3rd party support.

@bunchanumbers: It isn't so much that their console sucks power wise, it is that it sucks because I see ZERO reason to own one.

I don't care if they make an 8K console they don't do anything better than Playstation or Xbox and both of those have titles that I'm more likely to play. That is if they aren't turning me away by using stupid motion control or tablet controller gimmicks.

Haven't even been tempted to buy a Nintendo console since N64. NX isn't changing that by the looks of it.

@dexda: so you're saying you want Nintendo games but don't want to pay the entry fee to play those games. Sorry man it doesn't work that way. I'm afraid your playstation will be without Zelda for a long long time. Unless Nintendo buys the PlayStation brand from sony. Because it looks like Nintendo won't be going anywhere for a while.

I'll pay for all of their games, but I'm not willing to spend console money on another box I don't want.

@bunchanumbers: Power is not enough. If they want third party support they need to make a console whose development environment and architecture is similar to the other consoles so porting is minimal work. They need to stop making third parties jump through hoops to get games on their consoles. Stop discouraging M rated games, demanding censorship, and restricting social functionality to "protect the kids". Build an online system that has the same features as the others so third parties can run the same multiplayer systems. Stop with the required controller gimmicks.

@Thanatos2k: That will be the big question. Either way Nintendo is far more prepared for a Wii U situation than they were this generation. I think they are ready. they opened a developer portal for easier communication so that is a good sign.

@iandizion713: The only thing he misses out on are Zelda and Mario. All other games on Nintendo sucks ass. Nintendo focuses to much on kids games. Which make it the worst company in the history. You need a balance. 20% kids games and 80% adults games. Nintendo are 99% kids games.

Point is, it's nothing new. If they were able to surpas Sony as a whole as recently as 2014 while the Wii U was struggling and the PS4 surging, doing so now isn't a big deal.
