The achievement comes after the release of Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon.

Following the release of Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon this month, the Pokemon franchise has now crossed a massive new sales milestone. The Pokemon Company announced today that the monster-catching series has now passed 300 million games sold worldwide since the series debuted more than 20 years ago.

The sales are spread across 76 games released in the time between 1996 and 2017, running from the first games--Pokemon Red/Green--to Ultra Sun and Moon.

With 300 million units sold, the Pokemon series still trails Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, which has shifted more than 350 million units. It is believed that Mario franchise sales are even higher.

In other Pokemon game news, a "core" Pokemon RPG is in development for Nintendo Switch. Unfortunately, that is all we know about the project right now apart from the fact that it may not be released for "more than a year."
