Pokemon art director wants to take series back to basics

Ken Sugimori feels that cutting back on the number attacks, abilities, and items would be in the series' best interests.

Pokémon's art director, Ken Sugimori wishes he could take the franchise back to basics. In an interview translated by Siliconera, Sugimori talked about creating an experience closer to "what was offered in Pokémon Red and Green (Blue outside of Japan)," the original Pokémon games on Game Boy.

While he admits it's unlikely that the next game in the series would be able to cut back on what has grown to a 700+ roster of monsters, "it might be in the series' best interests to make a large adjustment to the number of attacks, abilities, and items."

Given the Pokémon series' continuing worldwide popularity, the next iteration of the game probably won't make such substantial changes, but Sugimori says that "it remains a possibility." In the meantime, the art director is thinking about gauging preliminary fan reactions to the pared down aesthetic by "simplifying the designs used for Pokémon" in other media outside the games.

Why does the Art Director have anything relevant to say besides "wish Nintendo would stop making us create Objectmons"?

That sounds like a horrible idea. Why limit the games variety/potential? The big changes made in this game are why I keep playing it. I've put 160+ hours into it already. I haven't been so addicted to a Pokemon game since Ruby/Sapphire (which also had its fair amount of changes). If they go back to basics with the next game, I'm out.

I just want an ultimate pokemon game where I can visit all the regions that have been introduced. That would keep me busy for at least 2 months.

They should make a Wii U console game based off Pokemon: The Origins complete with cut scenes and dialog. That would be one way to return to the basics.

My name is JOLTD, and I disapprove this message. The stats, abilities, moves, and pokemon are what makes pokemon fresh and more strategic, I say more pokemon! (but not another typing)

I like all the stuff, I wish there was more in these games. I'd like a full WiiU console game for this series already. You can grow up to be a Pokemon Master. Or become a Pokemon Watcher and have gameplay like Pokemon Snap. OR you can focus entirely on Pokemon contests and have the best Pokemon for using in contests even if they aren't the greatest for battle. Oh and did I forget to mention it should also include the entire Pokemon Card Game so players can focus on playing the card game exclusively. I love becoming a Pokemon master and all, but I think these games should finally just become a fully realized world that the loads of games, movies, comics, and shows have shown us for all these years. If making this kind of epic scope type of game requires the WiiU home system to make, then so be it. I will be the first person in line to buy it. Nintendo NEEDS TO MAKE THIS KIND OF GAME ALREADY.

What they really need to do is return the Pokemon designs to the basics. Almost all Pokemon in the last few generations have been terrible from either being to stupid, to complex, or both. Try looking at the best Pokemon of generation 1, 2 and arguably 3 and see what made them good and maybe you'll realize how to make a starting trio where the best Pokemon isn't the old Warner Brothers mascot painted blue with a woolly mane.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Me-thinks those nostalgia goggles are on a bit tight. I realize everyone has their own personal tastes, but it seems to me one would have to try really hard to force themselves to believe that the old designs were really so much better than they are now. And it's not like you can argue that Pokémon designs have gotten 'stupid' when gen 1 had such 'terrific' designs as voltorb... or grimer... or diglet...

Mind, I don't have anything against these Pokémon, but at the same time it's hard to consider their designs inspired. And I think you're right that the newer starters do have more complex designs, but I really fail to see how that's a bad thing.

It'll probably be interesting however i think a lot of people who think Blue/Red/Yellow were the best are saying that due to nostalgia. I think pokemon has improved, albiet the new designs aren't as good with X/Y.

I've been having an amazing time with X. I love going through this massive world with crazy and unpredictable monsters. In fact I think much of pokemon is too limited. An open world pokemon game with the same dynamics as the handhelds and not just a fighting game roster would actually be a reason I'd buy a WiiU.

That would not be the best idea. Red/Blue are still good games, but only because of it being the first of its kind and nostalgia. The mechanics in the game were broken beyond repair, and each generation has been infinitely more player friendly than the first. Limiting the attack and item selection is just kind of random and really does not make any sense. Pokemon X and Y did a perfect job at making EVERYTHING more accessible than any other previous generation. It may be the best one yet in that regard.

I love the older games but after playing the newer games I would find the simplicity from the older games to be a little boring but nostalgic compared to the newer ones I mean X & Y got everything perfect except the part that finding more "Rare" pokemon is a huge pain.

The main problem is that there are too many Pokemon to catch, everytime there is a new Pokemon, the old ones comes to the new Pokemon game is whats the problem so please Gamefreak, start back from the start, just plain new Pokemon from 1-150 like as if it was a new start for this series and please don't bring the old Pokemon. Back then I collected 150 pokemon from Red/Blue/Yellow and I have not catch all Pokemon from that point on, there is just way too many for me to start again.

<< LINK REMOVED >> They've already done that in several different generations to mixed results. Oftentimes it aggravates the fans that want to play with their favorite poke. Ruby and Sapphire took it to the most extreme when they changed the basic formula of the game to its current "base". The lack of old pokemon and the similarity of the new pokemon to old pokes expanded the roster to a bunch of duplicate pokemon and angered the fans at the time. Not only that, but no longer being able to transfer your old pokemon from Generation 2 into 3 was a major turnoff. It was needed cause the skeleton of the game changed so dramatically, but to go back to that again would not go over well.

Black and White took a different approach, by giving you ~150 new pokes and then not allow you to catch or import the old ones until after you beat the game. It was kinda forced and was completely broken because you could still work around it if you had two copies of the game and one completed story or if your friend completed the story and could import all your old pokes from Gen4 into your game for you from his copy of Black/White

X/Y is doing a kind of delayed introduction of old pokes by making some not available until after Christmas when the poke-transfer comes online. Granted, most of the pokemon are still available in x/y, more then I care to think should.. but that's just my opinion. They are at least limiting the introduction of old legendaries into the game to make the online competition a little more fair, but once the old pokes get re-introduced.. things are gonna get wonky

With the number of pokemon they have and the amazing amount of different areas and ways to catch them, it would make a lot more sense if they actually used the time differences in the game to make a lot of pokemon more rare to catch or find.

This right hear I agree, I play all the Pokemon games but not Black/White 2 and Ruby/Sapphire was a huge disappointment, no rival, no day/night cycle, no weekdays events, not that many new Pokemon, and no Backward Compatible to transfer from Gold/Silver to Ruby/Sapphire. I really expected so much more from Gamefreak at the time. Gold/Silver push the Gameboy Color to its limits and it still one of the best Pokemon game I play back then. I'm still playing and enjoying Pokemon Y.

Just so you guys know, GameFreak already announced that a Pokemon game for consoles will not happen at all since they believe the handheld consoles is where Pokemon belongs.

In terms of the article, I think that the game is fine. With the assortment of movesets and the mechanics of Pokemon IV's and EV's, it makes for a really good hardcore game, which Nintendo barely has in its arsenal these days.

However, future Pokemon appearances could use some changes...considering the cotton candy Pokemon doesn't exactly make sense...at all.

I absolutely agree with him. Another thing I've noticed about the new games is that they require a furore of clicks to get anything done compared to the vanilla games.

I haven't actually tried X/Y yet because I don't have a 3DS, but I have a DS, and this is the sort of things that just annoyed me like crazy:

Using a potion in Pokemon Gold: Down -> Items -> Select item -> Choose pokemon
Using a potion in Pokemon Heartgold: Down -> Left (or use Stylus, ugh) -> Items -> Potions -> Select item -> Confirm -> Choose Pokemon

It's just annoying to play with all those popups. From what I can tell in Let's Plays, this hasn't changed in X/Y.

I agree the amount of items right now is insane and it increases every generation. Every game now has to have appliances to change rotoms forms, meteors for deoxys, orbs for the creation trio, plates for Arceus, gene splicers for kyurem etc etc. I'd like to see a game where they cut down on the clutter and make catching them all a more realistic possibility than it is now. Perhaps in a spin off game I mean its not like they cant afford to take a risk with the series.

agree with everybody else here. there's no need to keep replaying the same game every 10 years or so. make a whole new adventure with the original pokemon.. better yet just make a full on 3D-modeled pokemon game for Wii U. it'll save Wii U and sell amazingly well. guaranteed.

that said, from a PROUD "genwunner" (first gen is best, just admit it) X and Y were pretty good games. first time i've been genuinely interested in pokemon since ruby and sapphire.

Yeah that was remade for Game Boy Advance.

I think they should make a Wii U game of the first Pokemon games.

That would be amazing!

if they go back to that original 151 pokemon then there needs to be something to be that hook for people to play, overall most people won't be happy if they just recreated blue and red (as its already been done with firered and leafgreen anyway). if they are to do this then a wide net of features should be available then just catching pokemon and/or battling with them, maybe have something like pokemon snap added so that people can take pictures of pokemon, (like in x and y how you can use the camera ingame) but thats how i see it working out a recreated game probably wont work.

I say go back to the original 151 and make a game that plays differently for once. The series doesn't need simplicity, it needs a new direction.

I think the attacks and ability's are great. They could stop adding them all the time in new games though and leave the attacks and ability's at what is out now for a while.

I think the customisation and diversity is what makes the Pokemon games so great!

As much as I love his artwork and what he's contributed to the series, I really have to disagree with him here. I cutting back sounds a lot like dumbing down. We'll always have our fond memories of Gen 1, but when you get right down to it there were a lot of things back then that just wouldn't hold up anymore. The Pokémon games *have* improved over time, and for good reason. Taking stuff away now would only be removing options available to the player.

He wants to take the series back-to-basics? That would only be necessary if the series had changed at all since the first games.

@Megamandrew I stopped playing the games back when GBA had been out for a while. I noticed how it just kept being the same old song, because of the repeated number of gyms etc. Instead of rehashing the same old idea, i think they should branch out into other genres with Pokemon. Examples are what they did with Colosseum and Snap, but maybe more genres.

I guess what i'm saying is, that they should take risks with Pokemon, instead of milking customers.

<< LINK REMOVED >> i just wish they could actually take some time with the story and develop it. the stories have always been too simplistic. Every time they almost go in a more mature direction they seem to ruin it somehow, BW for instance....XY seemed to have an almost dark story, i just wish they could have expanded a bit more on it and the characters.

<< LINK REMOVED >> they never milked customers, nearly every pokemon game has been worth buying if only for the entertainment value. as they say what's not broken doesn't need fixing. but i do agree with you that if they go back to basics they need to incorporate more features to make up for whats going to be missed. i for one would love another pokemon snap game.
