PlayStation Won't Attend E3 2019, Sony Confirms

Sony is skipping next year's big game expo.

Since its inception more than 20 years ago, the Electronic Entertainment Expo has traditionally been the biggest gaming event of the year. The industry's major players, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, have all had a regular presence at the show, but it appears Sony won't be a part of next year's event.

The ESA--the company that organizes E3--has shared the first details about E3 2019, and Sony will not have a presence there. The publisher is notably absent from the list of companies that have already committed to the event, among them its biggest console competitors, Microsoft and Nintendo, as well as other major publishers like Take-Two, Ubisoft, Activision, and more.

Now Playing: Sony Won't Have An E3 2019 Press Conference - GS News Update

Sony has confirmed it plans to skip next year's E3. "As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage the community," the company said in a statement to GameSpot. "PlayStation fans mean the world to us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and can't wait to share our plans with you."

This will mark the first time Sony has opted to skip E3 since it entered the video game business in the mid-90s, although other companies have similarly begun to reevaluate their E3 showings in recent years. Microsoft notably moved nearly its entire presence offsite to the Microsoft Theater for E3 2018, with only Mixer present on the showfloor, while Nintendo has forgone live press conferences in favor of pre-recorded video presentations for the past several years. Sony, too, tried something different with its E3 2018 showing by focusing primarily on four of its upcoming games and presenting them through a "guided experience," which garnered a mixed reaction from viewers.

The ESA's E3 2019 announcement also included positive remarks from both Microsoft and Nintendo.

"E3 is an outstanding opportunity for us to share new games and experiences with fans and business partners from across the globe," said Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. "Every year, we discuss what will be the best way for us to take advantage of the next E3 show in order to bring smiles to people's faces."

"E3 is an incredible platform to showcase the vibrancy and creativity of the video game industry," said Xbox boss Phil Spencer. "The ESA continues to expand the event's reach to fans and the industry, both in attendance and online, and we look forward to what's ahead at E3 2019."

Despite opting out of next year's E3, Sony doesn't appear to have cut its ties with the ESA. The company is still listed as a member on the ESA's website, so it is still paying membership fees and supporting the organization in that way.

E3 2019 isn't the only major event Sony is skipping. The company recently confirmed it will not host its annual PlayStation Experience this year. "We won't have it in the States this year," worldwide studios head Shawn Layden revealed on the PlayStation Blogcast. "Now that we have Spider-Man out the door, we're looking down into 2019 games like Dreams and Days Gone. But we wouldn't have enough to bring people all together in North America to have that event. We don't want to set expectations really high and then not deliver on that. It was a hard decision, but we have determined that this year we will not hold PlayStation Experience."

While video game companies may be rethinking their traditional approach to E3, the expo continues to be a major event. "E3 2018 broke records, and we sold out of both exhibit space and attendee badges," Stanley Pierre-Louis, interim CEO of ESA, said. "We are confident that, through the continued creative innovations delivered by our participating member companies, E3 2019 will deliver the same kind of excitement and energy. This year, we're looking forward to expanding E3 beyond the walls of the LACC and connecting gamers and attendees with incredible video game content throughout the entire LA Live complex."

E3 2019 takes place June 11-13. It is notably the final show confirmed for the Los Angeles Convention Center--the venue it has traditionally been held in for much of its history. Former ESA CEO Michael Gallagher had previously said the organization may pursue other options if the LACC does not modernize and upgrade the facility.

No point watching E3 anymore. Microsoft conferences have been terrible since 2001 and Nintendo is more focused on Direct.

@moonco: Microsoft was worth watching last year, they showed Ori 2 gameplay, Sekiro gameplay and Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay.

Sony showed... a guy sitting in a chair playing the banjo, then a movie, then content for Black Ops 3 (???), then a guy playing the flute, then a movie, then another absolute nonsense Kojima trailer.

I don't know what you mean by "Nintendo is more focused on Direct". They're almost always worth watching and on the off chance that they're not, at least they don't waste 3 hours of your life like Sony.

@Tiwill44: typical sony hater comment from you. some things never change. you value a trailer of ori 2 but absolutely despise a trailer of last of us 2 or death stranding or ghost of tsushima or spiderman... why? because every chance you get you hate on sony. aren't you getting tired of that behaviour? clearly most of the world doesn't agree with you and your crappy opinions that have no weight.

@Xristophoros: Because the trailers for Sony games were nothing but movies and scripted sequences. Nintendo and Microsoft (mostly) showed actual gameplay so you get an idea if you might enjoy the game.

@rglgathrawn: no, every gameplay sequence from pretty much every game ever previewed is scripted in some way. that is just how it is. that was a good representation of what the final game will be so not sure why you are so confused about it.

@Xristophoros: Metroidvanias are good games, third-person drama movies are not. Even if you think they are, the problem is Sony has no variety anymore. I wouldn't be hating on Sony if they still had exclusives like Symphony of the Night. Or unique RPGs like Threads of Fate. Or innovative platformers like LBP. Now they just release movie-like stuff with no substance. The same snoozefest every time. I don't know how people don't get bored.

@Tiwill44: like i said... the majority of the world disagrees with you, hence why ps4 is destroying the competition. sony is one of the few publishers putting out single player games with extremely high production values and a focus on storytelling. most other AAA games drop the ball with regards to the storytelling aspect by comparison -- this is not up for debate. sony has set the golden standard. just accept their games are not for you and move on. also, it sounds like you haven't touched ANY ps4 games this generation if you can make such a misinformed statement such as: "sony has no variety anymore". a game like god of war is drastically different from horizon, which is drastically different than uncharted, which is drastically different than last of us, which is drastically different than infamous, which is drastically different than spiderman and ghost of tsushima, etc., etc., etc... the only similarities to these games is that there is a high emphasis on the narrative... that doesn't make these games generic copycats or anything along those lines. the only exception is days gone which is indeed a bit too similar to the last of us. also, just to add... i don't know how people don't get tired of seeing another smash or mario sequel for the 10th time either...

@Xristophoros: "the only exception is days gone which is indeed a bit too similar to the last of us"

But you can't say that and not agree that Uncharted 4 has a lot in common with The Last of Us in terms of presentation, gameplay, etc. God of War is also similar in terms of gameplay, premise and delivery. Sure Kratos doesn't have a gun and the combat is more melee-focused, but that's it. It's not like it's a radically different genre. It even has similar themes. Parent and kid. Third-person action. Narrative-driven. Mature.

Ghost of Tsushima seems to me like it'll fit most of these key words, from what I've seen. Kill some arbitrary stuff -> move on to the next mature scripted story cutscene. It doesn't matter if it's open-world, that only adds more walking to the same thing. Horizon is mostly that.

Then there's the slightly-less-mature, slightly-less-narrative-driven ones: Infamous and Spiderman. While they have faster, less-grounded gameplay, they are still third-person action games at the end of the day. Of course, they're not the exact same game. But they still scratch a similar itch.

I mean, it's a pretty specific itch. And yet they all scratch it. I swear that itch would be bleeding by now.

If I don't like third-person narrative-driven action games, the PS4 has nothing noteworthy to me. Off the top of my head, in terms of exclusives, Xbox/PC has Ori (metroidvania) and Cuphead (run 'n gun).. and Nintendo has Fire Emblem (Strategy RPG), Smash Bros. (platform fighting), Xenoblade and Octopath (JRPG), among plenty other genres.

@Tiwill44: fine, let us assume you dislike every game i mentioned above (which is crazy but i will play along). how about persona 5? how about yakuza series? how about shadow of the colossus or the last guardian? how about tearaway unfolded, ni no kuni 2 or the gravity rush series? still no interest in ANY of those games? if your answer is still "no", that means you have already made up your mind about sony long ago and are living in denial. hard to take you seriously.

funny how you can give a free pass to fire emblem and octopath considering there are literally dozens of strat-jrpgs like fire emblem already and the only reason why octopath was so overhyped was due to its art direction if nothing else. many people have actually found the latter rather disappointing in execution, especially with the storytelling. again, not sure why you would be such a big fan of octopath but see no appeal in persona 5. fire emblem is a great series, but it has not done anything "new" for a while now. you are congratulating another fire emblem sequel over a game like god of war (2018) which completely reinvented the franchise into something fresh and new. wow, another smash brothers... this will be the 5th sequel? they threw in a ton of characters but the gemplay is the SAME. i love cuphead but it is another gunstar heroes/contra in many ways. it scores all its points and appeal due to its incredible art direction and personality. not much to say about xenosaga 2 other than it has been considered a disappointment to many fans of the original... it sounds like you made a decision long ago to actively avoid all sony products for one reason or another. no matter what game hits the platform, you will actively dislike it. that sounds a bit sad to me...

@Xristophoros: I can see the appeal of Persona 5 though. But it's a PS3 game. I've played Yakuza 0 on PC, it's pretty dope. Ni no Kuni 2 is also on PC, I might check it out on a sale (I waited for Dragon Quest 11 instead).

SotC is a remake of a PS2 game, which I've played for a bit, but... it wasn't for me. I wasn't a fan of the art style or premise (it's too... gray. It bores me). I didn't like Ico either and The Last Guardian seems to be another game in the same vein, and it was a very divisive game. I'm sadly not on the side that thinks it looks like much fun.

I checked out Gravity Rush on PS Now, and honestly that game was making me dizzy. Is Tearaway noteworthy? I mean, these games were designed for the PS Vita but they didn't sell enough so they had to put them on PS4. It seemed to be a gimmick game, and I really don't like those on Nintendo either.

The one game I can give the PS4 is Bloodborne. I almost finished it on PS Now; but I'm not particularly good at these games, so when I got to the Wet Nurse and wasn't enjoying the fight, I decided I had seen enough. That's the furthest I got in a Souls game; apparently the only other mandatory boss was Micolash. Loved the aesthetic of Bloodborne, it was like a more serious Castlevania in 3D. But cheap punishing deaths and cryptic progression are not things I tend to be fond of. I was forced to grind for vials and EXP because I was having trouble with some enemies, which got annoying and nearly gamebreaking if you ask me.

If there are "literally dozens" of games like Fire Emblem, do feel free to list them, because the only one I found so far is Valkyria Chronicles, which I've been playing (the 4th one, but I'm enjoying it so I'll probably check out the first one after).

Octopath, I think some people went in with the wrong expectations. It's like, the BotW of JRPGs. Not meant to be about the storytelling. It's meant to be about forging your own path. Yes it has 8 stories, but each of them isn't gonna be as grand and epic as the story you would find in a linear JRPG. This one is more about your own journey through that world. That's something only video games can offer and I respect it. I only finished 3 stories so far and I already felt like I got my money's worth. (I only recruited 2 other characters so I had a party of 3 characters instead of 4)

Again, with Xenoblade 2, people preferred the main story of the first one. Honestly, I did too. But what about everything else? The combat, music, world, sidequests.. there is plenty to love about that game. People put way too much value in story.

Smash is a one-of-a-kind game and nothing matches its quality. Some have tried to mimic its success; they all failed completely.

Cuphead's art style alone is an achievement, but its gameplay was excellent as well.

There is a lot of worth in a masterful execution of an older gameplay style. I hate that so many modern AAA games all go for the same thing: third-person action with story cutscenes after each little section of gameplay. Oh but the story/lore is good so I guess nothing else matters..

@Tiwill44: its a shame how you quickly change the standards when mentioning the non ps4 games. You mention the "games all feel similar because it's an action 3rd person" but fail to mention cuphead and ori are action side scrollers. Instead you went into smaller details such as run n gun. I'm sorry but i don't know how someone can take you seriously after seeing the double standard bias in your comments.....Well guess what? If god of war and horizon are 3rd person then ori and cuphead are side scrollers in the same standard. ?

@pcps4xb: Eh, a metroidvania with a focus on platforming challenges like Ori has a lot less in common with a boss-rush run 'n gun/shoot 'em up game like Cuphead than two narrative-driven third-person action games like Horizon and GoW have with each other. But, to each their own.

@Tiwill44: but the fact is you weren't using the same standards. And you failed to mention uncharteds focus on platforming compared to the non existent platforming in TLOU. You said they have "alot In common" but the reality is, guns is the only thing they have in common. Totally different focus on gameplay. I can play and get tired of one and start the other right after. That's how different they are.

@Xristophoros: Methinks none of the games you mentioned could be regarded as being drastically different. They're the product of mechanical homogenization, which is what Tiwill is alluding to, I believe.

@asnakeneverdies: by your logic, very few original games exist in the AAA space then. that is a systemic problem and is irrelevant when discussing sony. the same rule would apply to nintendo, microsoft, ubisoft, ea, activision... etc... heck, even in the indi space there are tons of 8/16bit looking clones. you might as well quit gaming if you actually believe everything is so similar in design. many would argue movies also follow certain tropes and plot devices... again, to be completely and utterly original is almost impossible these days...

@Xristophoros: "Very few original games exist in the AAA space then." That is true, and also a component of the observation. However, that's not the intent of the remark. The way these games handle player interaction and storytelling is deeply informed by a desire for accessibility at the cost of mechanical substance, Xristophoros. And while it is true that this is an industry wide concern, I believe it is more prominently exemplified by the Sony effort.

@asnakeneverdies: to me, it sounds like you are talking about ubisoft, ea and activision rather than sony. i cannot comprehend where you are coming from so i will just accept your opinion and move on... i suppose it is best that you stay clear of sony then as they have run their ip's into the ground and are incapable of delivering industry-leading experiences that cater to your tastes (whatever they may be).

@Xristophoros: I don't see why I should stay clear of their games. There are redeemable aspects to them, even if mostly relegated to presentation. And they might still develop something that I would consider worthwhile, mechanically. Who knows? If anything, they make for excellent tech demos, Xristophoros.

@Tiwill44: I don't think metroidvania considerations unilaterally enhance game experiences and ultimately I dread the modern implementation of that design philosophy. And although I always reserve the benefit of the doubt for Hideo Kojima, I've found your remarks to be very agreeable, Tiwill. However, Moonco said that there is no point in watching E3 anymore, and that's that! ?‍♂️

@asnakeneverdies: I was a little broad there, but I do believe that a well-executed 2D metroidvania always offers a far more enjoyable and less-flawed gameplay loop than a cinematic third-person game does. The latter's primary intention is merely to tell a story by holding your hand through corridors to get you to the next cutscene or scripted sequence, which is very jarring because most of the time I'm holding a controller for no reason or only to move forward.

Meanwhile, a metroidvania's intent is to let you explore a world freely and to give you increasingly difficult challenges as you learn new moves and become more powerful. They tend to have strong atmosphere because it's not about moving to the right mindlessly like in a linear platformer (I love them too, but they are far less engrossing), and it's not about moving forward until the next cutscene kicks in like in a movie-game.

Metroidvanias almost never take control away from the player, and they always offer skill-based challenges (precise combat/platforming). I call Sony's games "movies" because they don't make me feel engaged as a player. They make me feel passive, like I'm watching a movie, except with some interaction here and there. I never feel satisfaction from their gameplay, and upon completion of such a game, I never feel like I'm going to miss the act of playing it. So then, why play it in the first place? If I'm just there for the story, I would rather not play it at all.

@Tiwill44: Yes, I was specifically referring to genre considerations and their modern implementation, whereby they amount to little more than mechanical pandering issued to leverage human fallibility, as is often the case with progression components within highly contrived set piece driven action games.

Personally, I see no glaring issue in taking control away from the player to tell a story through cutscenes or the like. However, I do condemn the use of fragmentary control, issued within contemporary experiences on account of their cinematic ambitions. That said, I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiment, Tiwill.

I shudder whenever a cinematic experience like Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice, however competently executed its presentational component might be, becomes celebrated. Especially within the industry, by our very own critics who are supposed to be our educators and the guardians of the medium. Utterly disgraceful! ?

RIP e3. I feel like other devs will follow and save money and do pre recorded conferences to save money. End of the day the same trailers can be put up on youtube for free and itll sell. Doing a live e3 conference wont sell off the shelf unless they reveal a new console. It was good but lately e3 has been bad. Anyone else miss the early 2000s style where game studios were at the floor, would reveal trailers, give out discs to take home to play the demo or watch the trailers at home? we need trailers like Kojima used to do with the mgs2, mgs3 style trailers that went for ages and were major hype. e3 needs that. not stupid celebs and paid actors on stage doing cringe presentations with half the show wasted on weak games or weak indy games even

I think they played all their cards these couple of years, though they had a good hand. I'm still bummed as E3 has already become empty and shallow.

I get the whole "stoop to jump higher" thing they have going on right now, but what do they mean new "inventive ways" to engage the community?

@Barighm: most likely will do a nintendo route and do pre recorded reveals to save money and not take up so much time. might be the norm and no more e3. instead MS, Nin, Sony will just hype up their own shows to stream for everyone with news each year from now on. big money saver and draws the same attention and hype

@Archangel2222: Yeah, I figured, but I was wondering if there is some OTHER means to do it.

I had the idea of a platform specific means to deliver it since not everyone uses YouTube or Twitch or whatever. You can't assume everyone will hear your announcements, but you can if those announcements go straight to all PS4's out there (assuming online connectivity).

I'm not looking forward to the next generation of gaming. especially with this digital only trend that seems to be happening.

@masterfrankgrimes: I think if we all had 100mbps connections and some sort of mass third party digital storage closet where we could trade our digital items and or sell them back it would be a lot more enticing. I get that it's inevitable, but it feels so early for the change.

@masterfrankgrimes: Me neither. They're trying to push us into a weak pc era where you don't own any copies of the games you buy. Also speaking for myself all AAA games are just filled with a ton of profanity for no reason. Just nothing good to play. Calling it quits soon. Fact I haven't even played a game in months.

Yeah cuz, doing E3 as well as something else is absolutely out of the question. E3 is where I see games I sometimes didn't even know existed. It's a time where all 3 major platforms can go head to head and its entertaining to watch. It seems to me they have more to lose than gain by skipping it but Sony's going to do what Sony's going to do. I doubt I'll watch some separate event. Sony's last E3 was just bizarre despite the solid games they showed. I'd really like to hear their reasoning behind this besides saying they continually try to do things differently. They did something different last E3 and it was bad. Making us wait while they switch venues and have some guy playing music before each segment. Bizarre.

Could be holding back announcements to go alongside the PS5 in 2020.

@gamingdevil800: But that's not the wording they used. They said find new ways to engage the community, as in, a different platform entirely to make announcements. We already know they plan to not announce anything for awhile. This suggests they're up to something else entirely.

@Barighm: Well assuming the editor didn't tweak the quote... they said "New" and "Familiar" ways.. which I assume to mean perhaps one of their own press conferences or perhaps the Paris Games Conference which I believe is a couple months after E3? So yeah... maybe they just mean this year, since they are skipping E3, they will announce their plans on another platform that simply could be another press conference we are familiar with or some other type of announcement(s). Or "new" as in... it's "new" that we announce this sort of thing at a familiar conference. haha

@jumalan75: Originally said "new and inventive", although "new" still applies, and the preceding Sony quote states the same.

Anyway, that's why I'm asking. I get the whole digital thing, but I'm wondering if there is any OTHER way they could do it. Platform specific delivery method, perhaps? Everyone who owns a Playstation gets to see the announcements since not everyone necessarily uses YouTube or Twitch or whatever?

because they dont have new games. i am sony console fan and i use a pro beside my pc.i think they dont want to show much more of games like death stranding or ghost of tsoshima or LOU2. these games are great i dont doubt it but i really hoped for Bloodborne 2 or new god of war. sony dont have much of competition since microsfot didnot have exclusive titles in these recent years and sony is the owner of the market either it is console sales number or exclusive games .. so they dont do anything else until the end of this gen. just like nvidia in gpu marketing or intel although that has changed with AMD. but i have to say sony did a great job this gen, i am happy some of the best games I played in my 25 years of being a gamer . games like gow 2018 or bloodborne are among my top 10.

@Barighm: sony lays low lol i know but the only reason sony or nintendo or microsoft do not want to attend to conference like e3 is lack of content . Laying low for what? they need to show exclusives and content for the coming year .when they dont show up people start saying they dont care.

@rezagtx2017: Then they're stupid because there is a bunch of exclusives coming out in the next year, and EVERYONE has an off year every now and again while they reload for the next big thing. Sony just made the smart move of doing it at the end of the console cycle when we care the least. And given what Sony has done this gen, It's better that they take a moment to wind up, because their big blow was worth it.

@Barighm: @Barighm: sony was the best platform in this gen from the point of exclusive content. And they are still have some major players like ghost or death or tlou.

Haha at all people saying it's because of the lack of support they are focusing on current gen. Does this mean we can all collectively agree that the ps4 pro was a complete piece of ****.

Surely sony have tons In the locker for their '4k' games machine that they'd love to show off...

@peterhorner1867: Compared the x1x offerings it's mediocre. Kind of pointless if it's not offering even things ps3 did.

People dont realize how expensive and unnecessary E3 press conferences are...E3 is becoming less and less important anyway when they can just put out a video of what theyll release, I bet theyll start doing Playstation directs....

@IanNottinghamX: And apart from last year's weirdness, isn't it what press conferences have mostly become? A one-hour compilation of trailers that 99% of people watch from the homes? I know, the anticipation and excitement around E3 play a big part in creating a mental image of those companies and its products within the collective imaginary.

But when you think about it, it might not make much sense from a financial standpoint. Does it pay off? Anyway, I think it does. Sony is just probably holding their hand for an exclusive PS5 reveal event in early 2019.

@IanNottinghamX: all conferances are expenisve to run. Oscar and game award and other car shows are expensive are you saying we should cancel them all? They are part of marketing and the whole business.

@rezagtx2017: Video games are different. Especially when we are talking about Home consoles. The movie industry is a different animal with different dynamics involved. Same with Carshows. Game companies make their money off of the consoles/games they sell. It costs millions to run those conferences. Id rather have some new games published rather than them spending that money on a nonsense E3 conference.

@IanNottinghamX: as far as i know e3 is just another conference, so you are saying but not participating in these kind of conferences they can spend money on making better games or more of them? i dont think so. and e3 is very fun, people talk about them all the year long so is not nonsense. not participating in e3 for a major console and game developer is nonsense.

@IanNottinghamX: with your resolve and view we have to directly compare all shows and conferences to VHS LOL. just because sony didnot do it it dose not mean it is not good. so tgs and gamescom and all other games shows are dated ? really ?gaming is a big industry and e3 is its main show. so no it is not dated.

@bdrtfm: I mean Im sure they can afford it but the point i was making is E3 is unnecessary in 2018 when you have livestreaming and Youtube. Renting expensive venues for a press conference instead of just doing a livestream is wasteful and as a business they probably are cost cutting.
