PlayStation Won't Attend E3 2019, Sony Confirms

Sony is skipping next year's big game expo.

Since its inception more than 20 years ago, the Electronic Entertainment Expo has traditionally been the biggest gaming event of the year. The industry's major players, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, have all had a regular presence at the show, but it appears Sony won't be a part of next year's event.

The ESA--the company that organizes E3--has shared the first details about E3 2019, and Sony will not have a presence there. The publisher is notably absent from the list of companies that have already committed to the event, among them its biggest console competitors, Microsoft and Nintendo, as well as other major publishers like Take-Two, Ubisoft, Activision, and more.

Now Playing: Sony Won't Have An E3 2019 Press Conference - GS News Update

Sony has confirmed it plans to skip next year's E3. "As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage the community," the company said in a statement to GameSpot. "PlayStation fans mean the world to us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and can't wait to share our plans with you."

This will mark the first time Sony has opted to skip E3 since it entered the video game business in the mid-90s, although other companies have similarly begun to reevaluate their E3 showings in recent years. Microsoft notably moved nearly its entire presence offsite to the Microsoft Theater for E3 2018, with only Mixer present on the showfloor, while Nintendo has forgone live press conferences in favor of pre-recorded video presentations for the past several years. Sony, too, tried something different with its E3 2018 showing by focusing primarily on four of its upcoming games and presenting them through a "guided experience," which garnered a mixed reaction from viewers.

The ESA's E3 2019 announcement also included positive remarks from both Microsoft and Nintendo.

"E3 is an outstanding opportunity for us to share new games and experiences with fans and business partners from across the globe," said Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. "Every year, we discuss what will be the best way for us to take advantage of the next E3 show in order to bring smiles to people's faces."

"E3 is an incredible platform to showcase the vibrancy and creativity of the video game industry," said Xbox boss Phil Spencer. "The ESA continues to expand the event's reach to fans and the industry, both in attendance and online, and we look forward to what's ahead at E3 2019."

Despite opting out of next year's E3, Sony doesn't appear to have cut its ties with the ESA. The company is still listed as a member on the ESA's website, so it is still paying membership fees and supporting the organization in that way.

E3 2019 isn't the only major event Sony is skipping. The company recently confirmed it will not host its annual PlayStation Experience this year. "We won't have it in the States this year," worldwide studios head Shawn Layden revealed on the PlayStation Blogcast. "Now that we have Spider-Man out the door, we're looking down into 2019 games like Dreams and Days Gone. But we wouldn't have enough to bring people all together in North America to have that event. We don't want to set expectations really high and then not deliver on that. It was a hard decision, but we have determined that this year we will not hold PlayStation Experience."

While video game companies may be rethinking their traditional approach to E3, the expo continues to be a major event. "E3 2018 broke records, and we sold out of both exhibit space and attendee badges," Stanley Pierre-Louis, interim CEO of ESA, said. "We are confident that, through the continued creative innovations delivered by our participating member companies, E3 2019 will deliver the same kind of excitement and energy. This year, we're looking forward to expanding E3 beyond the walls of the LACC and connecting gamers and attendees with incredible video game content throughout the entire LA Live complex."

E3 2019 takes place June 11-13. It is notably the final show confirmed for the Los Angeles Convention Center--the venue it has traditionally been held in for much of its history. Former ESA CEO Michael Gallagher had previously said the organization may pursue other options if the LACC does not modernize and upgrade the facility.

Wow. The one press conference I look forward to at E3, and usually the only one I watch. What a disappointment.

Hopefully Sony has a damn good reason for this and they have something big up their sleeve.

Is this the beginning of the end for E3...again?....

@kstaggs87: Sony's E3 has paled in comparison to Nintendo the last two years. They even almost had a worse show than Microsoft this year and Microsoft ALWAYS sucks.

@rglgathrawn: I didn’t think Sony had a bad press conference this year. It wasn’t their best but it was far from their worst.

Cod, Battlefield and Gran Turismo have gone to crap, Killzone is dead, FarCry is pretty much the same every time. FPS genre is screwed bar Doom and Wolfenstein. Sony only have 2 games but they've showed all they can of them already. There's not much to get excited about in gaming next year really. Hopefully Cyberpunk will come out. Sony have nothing new to show. Not good times for gaming.

@quinnd6: two games (death stranding and last of us 2 i assume you are referring to)? are you forgetting ghost of tsushima, dreams and days gone? also, gran turismo sport had a terrible launch, but it has since been patched to hell and back and is great now. tons of online content and they brought back all the single player events. every month or two it seems they are throwing in more FREE cars and tracks. it is important to keep up with what is going on around you, rather than talk about how something was a year ago. your opinion is completely out of date and false.

@Xristophoros: Days Gone is just another post-apocalyptic zombie game, looks like Last of Us but with more stealth and bikers. And all they showed of Ghost of Tsushima was a CGI movie, was it not? We need actual gameplay in order to be psyched for a game. For that matter, it seemed like very little of Last of Us 2 was player-inputted commands. It looked WAY too scripted, even for a Naughty Dog game.

And honestly, I have 0 hope for Death Stranding. I dislike Kojima, his convoluted plots only make sense in his mind, and the games should never be as long as they are. And they still haven't shown us actual gameplay.

@rglgathrawn: ghost of tsushima was all gameplay, actually... all running in-engine. you should re-watch it as your memory is deceiving you. yea, days gone could be a misfire... no doubt about it... but the standards are just so ridiculously high for sony exclusives now (nearly all have hit this gen), that it was bound to happen sooner or later. it will likely be better than most third party games coming out of EA, ubi and activision, at least. even a disappointing sony title is better than most other generic schlock we get from other publishers is what i am trying to say.

@Xristophoros: I forgot about ghosts of tsushima and Death Stranding actually.

They look like good games although no-one really knows what the heck Death Stranding is about,

The thing this generation unfortunately is lacking is good single player fps.

We have Doom, Far Cry and Wolfenstein games and soon Rage but this year was a barren wasteland of just Far Cry 5.

Sony don't have any exclusive shooters to rival Halo and nothing even remotely like Gears of War but then again Microsoft only had one of each of those games in the last 5 years whereas in the previous gen they had 2 gears of war games and 2 Halo games by the 5 year mark. Sony had one mediocre Killzone game and any other fps they had were online focused muck.

Gran Turismo Sport is bs I'm afraid and it doesn't even allow you to save unless you are connected to the net and the single player events don't have anywhere near the content of the proper Gran Turismo games. I will admit though I never bought it, I only played the demo and when I knew it was focused on online and didn't have a proper career mode I never wanted to buy it plus the online only restrictions that it imposes meant I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole out of principle.

Anyway I'd rather Sony kept making games for the PS4 I wouldn't want a new generation of console yet.

It's been a very slow generation to get going and get games out it needs more time I feel.

Perhaps they don't anticipate much to build a press conference around. I'm guessing the PS5 announcement is coming at a later date.

I feel this is the eye of the storm. Sony definitely has something brewing, but it also illustrates an upcoming gap in content. Sony's always been a dominant presence of E3 since their "299." announcement back in 1995, so to not see them next year is disappointing. I'd really would have loved them to be there to show at least something, but if they truly don't have enough to show off to make it worth it... well, we'll just have to wait for the PS5.

Great... They have big plans I'm assuming. Perhaps they don't want to announce anything too early (Hardware wise). Probably a mix of strategy as well, timing, saves them a boatload of money and then they don't have to deal with the whole E3 competition thing when they know they are focusing on next gen.

Recently saw they filed a patent for wristband finger tracking motion controllers which leads me to believe next gen PSVR is on the horizon too. Super excited.

@jumalan75:

Next gen PSVR will hopefully be the piece of hardware that brings VR to the mainstream. The current PSVR’s field of vision, colour and screen resolution are barely good enough to make a viable VR system. Resi 7 was fantastic in VR but we’re at least a generation away from playing Red Dead 2 in VR.

@el_swanno: Agreed. PSVR is a marvelous look into the potential of VR, but it's clearly an early adopter kinda thing. Which is alright, as most first-gen devices of such disruptive techs usually are.

I'm also highly excited for next-gen PSVR for the same reason you mentioned: VR should finally feel like a mainstream product. Which means easier setup, improved FOV and image quality, next-gen controls… hell, it might even be wireless (or at least offer that as an add-on). Plus, the PS5 will offer a substantial bump in performance, specially if rumors of baked-in VR hardware are confirmed. And last but not least, PSVR 2 will launch with a massive library of cheap and awesome games (assuming backwards compatibility).

Can't wait.

@gfantini:

PS owners missed out on Fallout 4 in VR due to the system being underpowered. I tried Skyrim VR and despite the age of the game playing an open world VR Game was pretty dandy.

I think the next gen of VR will be the one that takes off

there are two things to consider here:

1. we already know the remaining first party exclusives for ps4 for 2019 — death stranding, dreams, last of us 2, days gone and ghost of tsushima. sony might feel there is no need to reiterate the same games AGAIN for the third time at e3 2019 so they won't.

2. sony is at a crossroads with ps4 and the soon to be revealed ps5. as such, sony might not be ready to talk about ps5 games at e3 2019. they might not even reveal ps5 until q1 2020 because if they did any sooner, it would hurt ps4 hardware sales.

what does this mean? sony is going to ride out 2019 on auto pilot. it will put out 3 of the biggest exclusives of 2019 (and arguably this entire console generation) and stay quiet. the anticipation will grow to incredible levels leading into 2020, at which point, sony will announce the ps5. my guess would be january or february 2020 is when the announcement will be made, with a release in fall 2020.

in 2019, sony will likely scatter a few nintendo-like video directs to hype up its remaining 5 first party games and that will be more than enough to spread the word and hype across the globe. sony will have very strong hardware and software sales in 2019, with or without an e3 conference. they will surpass the 100m sales ps4 mark as well, which is quite a feat and cause for celebration as only a handful of consoles in history have done this -- two of which are sony consoles.

still, as a longtime sony fan, it is disappointing i won't have anything to look forward to at e3 next year. sony's conference is the ONLY one i truly care about. but hopefully their video directs will be fun to watch throughout the year.

It’s clear that Sony announcing games 2-3 years ahead of release has caught up to them. If that’s the case, I much rather they skip a year and start showing up at events with games releasing 5-8 months after presenting them. Like some others have said, though, Sony May be readying a stellar ps5 showing for 2020.

@pcps4xb: Sony took it too far, though. Both MS and especially Nintendo are showing restraint when it comes to announcing new games. Take E3 from two years ago and Sony had very little to announce that was new from the E3 before that. I love Sony, don’t get me wrong, and think that if they’re skipping trade show this year to focus on games and maybe console releasing within a year from their reveal i’ll Be a happy E3er

I was like the whole "engage the community" bit was nonsense. Then they kept it real. 'We ain't got nothing' lol. I respect that though.

Lol, Playstation is so dhoomed. LOLOLOLOLLLL

Just kidding.

This is an intriguing move - could be just a vote of no confidence in E3's return-on-investment, but I'd say more likely they're just saving everything for a giant explosion of reveals at their own conference rather than spreading things out to try and make all of the conferences exciting
