PlayStation Won't Attend E3 2019, Sony Confirms

Sony is skipping next year's big game expo.

Since its inception more than 20 years ago, the Electronic Entertainment Expo has traditionally been the biggest gaming event of the year. The industry's major players, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, have all had a regular presence at the show, but it appears Sony won't be a part of next year's event.

The ESA--the company that organizes E3--has shared the first details about E3 2019, and Sony will not have a presence there. The publisher is notably absent from the list of companies that have already committed to the event, among them its biggest console competitors, Microsoft and Nintendo, as well as other major publishers like Take-Two, Ubisoft, Activision, and more.

Sony has confirmed it plans to skip next year's E3. "As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage the community," the company said in a statement to GameSpot. "PlayStation fans mean the world to us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and can't wait to share our plans with you."

This will mark the first time Sony has opted to skip E3 since it entered the video game business in the mid-90s, although other companies have similarly begun to reevaluate their E3 showings in recent years. Microsoft notably moved nearly its entire presence offsite to the Microsoft Theater for E3 2018, with only Mixer present on the showfloor, while Nintendo has forgone live press conferences in favor of pre-recorded video presentations for the past several years. Sony, too, tried something different with its E3 2018 showing by focusing primarily on four of its upcoming games and presenting them through a "guided experience," which garnered a mixed reaction from viewers.

The ESA's E3 2019 announcement also included positive remarks from both Microsoft and Nintendo.

"E3 is an outstanding opportunity for us to share new games and experiences with fans and business partners from across the globe," said Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. "Every year, we discuss what will be the best way for us to take advantage of the next E3 show in order to bring smiles to people's faces."

"E3 is an incredible platform to showcase the vibrancy and creativity of the video game industry," said Xbox boss Phil Spencer. "The ESA continues to expand the event's reach to fans and the industry, both in attendance and online, and we look forward to what's ahead at E3 2019."

Despite opting out of next year's E3, Sony doesn't appear to have cut its ties with the ESA. The company is still listed as a member on the ESA's website, so it is still paying membership fees and supporting the organization in that way.

E3 2019 isn't the only major event Sony is skipping. The company recently confirmed it will not host its annual PlayStation Experience this year. "We won't have it in the States this year," worldwide studios head Shawn Layden revealed on the PlayStation Blogcast. "Now that we have Spider-Man out the door, we're looking down into 2019 games like Dreams and Days Gone. But we wouldn't have enough to bring people all together in North America to have that event. We don't want to set expectations really high and then not deliver on that. It was a hard decision, but we have determined that this year we will not hold PlayStation Experience."

While video game companies may be rethinking their traditional approach to E3, the expo continues to be a major event. "E3 2018 broke records, and we sold out of both exhibit space and attendee badges," Stanley Pierre-Louis, interim CEO of ESA, said. "We are confident that, through the continued creative innovations delivered by our participating member companies, E3 2019 will deliver the same kind of excitement and energy. This year, we're looking forward to expanding E3 beyond the walls of the LACC and connecting gamers and attendees with incredible video game content throughout the entire LA Live complex."

E3 2019 takes place June 11-13. It is notably the final show confirmed for the Los Angeles Convention Center--the venue it has traditionally been held in for much of its history. Former ESA CEO Michael Gallagher had previously said the organization may pursue other options if the LACC does not modernize and upgrade the facility.

'We'd like to delight gamers... by not showing up to the biggest and most important press event of the year'.

All this means to me is they have nothing interesting to show for next year.

@Blaiyan:

....fanboys. -_-'

Listen, i am or at least was always a Sony backer above most else.. especially in the context of the current gaming trends. Pretty much the go-to place when it came to non mainstream games from japan and such. (not to mention that to this day i hold PS1 and PS2 up as the standard) But with this completely and utterly nonsensical reversal on censorship, a slap/spit in the face to fans and gamers as a whole, no way can they be given a free pass! This is literally it when it comes to the worst case scenario for any media or fandom!

When non skimpy bathing suits are getting light rays, shines and blurs leading to 100% blocking, and whole images/scenes and gameplay features are being taken out of M rated games! (WHILENINTENDO PORTS OF THE SAME GAMES ARE BEING RELEASED WITHOUT TROUBLE OR SUCH CENSORING!) Or entire games are being blocked in some regions (once again) over little more than concept... It's time to start getting out the pitchforks and torches!

And that is especially the case when it's all being done to placate a really tiny, but super loud group of perpetual whiners, crybabies, trolls and shit slingers... Some of which being moralists, prudes neo-puritans and other ideologues and zealots from outside gaming... People who never had interest in these games/gaming from the beginning, and won't nor haven't even after actually getting there way!

People generally refused to listen when others warned that Sony moving control of it's entire gaming division over to california a few years ago was a really dangerous and quite insane thing to do. (gee.. i wonder if the intentional killing of the Vita in the west, a system known for niche and other games like this, had anything thing to do with who's in control now... surly it can't be the case right... -_-) Now here we are! With even japanese versions of games on Sony systems being censored. The new western censors are now censoring things in japan! (Yet another thing all the hand-wavers insisted to be impossible and thus 'ridiculous' to talk/worry/try to do something about.... i.e. "everything's fine/safe, move along")

Let Sony know they ****ed up big time!

@James_xeno: Everyone mocks the torches and pitchforks until they need to use them ? Not a fanboy of a game or company. I think I now fit into an odd sub-group of ex- or psuedo gamers who still buys games from time to time but never plays them. Who loves the medium but despise how the industry has shifted where nearly all content (especially AAA) are perverse and profane for no reason. With no attempt at making a simple good/clean seperate audio option available for those who don't care for the dumb downed dialogue doing math wrong by trying to find the greatest common denominator. If those who love it attack and don't about our position I won't give thought to theirs. We'll see how far reaching this is and what effect it'll have on other types of content. For now it's just dudes getting it up for fake cartoon chest. No need to quote to me the 'when they came for % I stood by' line. Let them come. Gaming needs a kick in the teeth

They probably don’t have much in development unannounced for ps4 as far as first party goes... Wouldn’t be surprised if they have diverted resources to the ps5 launch lineup after seeing how fantastic the switch did having a stellar year of constant content at launch.

makes sense they just dont have anything for this generation. game production has changed so much since last gen that the current model for consoles just doesnt work. there arent anough developers that make quality titles that sell consoles. microsoft turned their console into a emulator to keep the xbone relevant without the presence of quality games. sony poured a little more into their first party games but that didnt come out to too much. Sony just doesnt have anything to show these days because their reshaping where their console direction is going. PS5 looks like its going for a Xbone emulator kind of deal. Xbone is turning more to a PC/console hybrid direction. it sounds exciting for sure. but at the same time i feel bad for those that grew up with this gen, they hardly got anything iconic to call their own.

@magnifihundred: That's the dumbest comment all day, thanks for the laugh. Do Sony fanboys think that Sony is so awesome that everyone only came to E3 just for what Sony had to show? Get your head out of your rectum.

What the hell? I always look forward to E3, this seems like a terrible decision. If they just aren't going to have a physical presence and instead do something digital like Nintendo then I guess that is okay, but it still seems weird they wouldn't be there at all.
