PlayStation Will Not Be At E3 2020

For the second year in a row, Sony will skip the annual gaming expo.

Sony will once again be skipping E3. Despite the PS5's imminent launch this holiday season, the company has told GamesIndustry.biz that it will not have a presence at E3 2020.

"After thorough evaluation SIE has decided not to participate in E3 2020," Sony said. "We have great respect for the ESA as an organization, but we do not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on this year."

In lieu of attending E3, Sony says it will be "participating in hundreds of consumer events across the globe" this year to promote PS4 and PS5 games. "Our focus is on making sure fans feel part of the PlayStation family and have access to play their favorite content. We have a fantastic line up of titles coming to PlayStation 4, and with the upcoming launch of PlayStation 5, we are truly looking forward to a year of celebration with our fans," the company said.

The ESA, which organizes E3, has released a statement stating that it expects this year's show to be as exciting as previous years. "E3 is a signature event celebrating the video game industry and showcasing the people, brands, and innovations redefining entertainment loved by billions of people around the world. E3 2020 will be an exciting, high-energy show featuring new experiences, partners, exhibitor spaces, activations, and programming that will entertain new and veteran attendees alike. Exhibitor interest in our new activations is gaining the attention of brands that view E3 as a key opportunity to connect with video game fans worldwide."

This marks the second year in a row that Sony has opted out of the annual gaming expo. Last year, Sony said it would not be attending E3 because it was looking for other "inventive opportunities" to connect with its own community.

"PlayStation fans mean the world to us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019," a PlayStation representative said at the time.

E3 isn't the only big gaming event that Sony has pulled away from in recent years; the company also hasn't hosted its annual PlayStation Experience convention since 2017.

While E3 has traditionally been a major venue for video game and console reveals, this wouldn't be the first time Sony has unveiled a system outside of the expo. Back in 2013, Sony officially pulled back the curtain on the PS4 during a special "PlayStation Meeting" media event instead of at E3. It's possible the company will host another such event to divulge more details about the PS5 sometime this year.

Sony revealed the first tidbits about the PS5 last May, and since then the company has been gradually drip-feeding more information about the next-generation console. Most recently, Sony unveiled the system's completely unsurprising logo during its CES 2020 briefing. SIE president Jim Ryan concluded the segment by promising that further specifics about the PS5, including the game lineup and other features, will be announced at a later date.

Sony has not yet announced a release date for the PS5, but it is slated to launch sometime in holiday 2020, around the time that Microsoft's rival Xbox Series X console will hit the market. You can read everything we know about Xbox Series X so far in our roundup.

It's because they know what kind of crapshow was E3 for the passed couple of years and understandably don't want to have any association with it. E3 use to be about electronics and mainly video games. While in the passed couple of years it was more about everything else then that. And mostly about irrelevant crap no one asked for. I only look up game announcment highlights and that is it, watching throught that whole garbage is a major waste of time. Can't imagine going there and pay for it just to be bombareded with garbage.

@airrwof: If it was a crapshow they were the biggest reason for that after that terrible showing in 2018 with nothing but crap. They had nothing but crap in 2019 and decided to skip 2019.

Last year was a little more dull for E3 without Sony, but I can't say it was necessary and it's not really necessary this year either. Sony does their own thing throughout the year and that's all we need. The PS5 is coming out end of year and we'll get all the info we need on it from Sony directly. Why should they waste money on a big, extravagant presence at E3, when they give us everything we need 3-4 times a year? Last E3 demonstrated that it is becoming less and less relevant by becoming a less and less interesting showcase for the public to get gaming info. We're inundated by it all year long. Sure, some of the conferences are good fun. Keanu coming out for Cyberpunk was huge, but for the most part, E3 has become a much less relevant necessity as we've had more access to gaming info and demos as time's gone on. Sony's doing the smart thing here by saving money and still giving us the same thing we'd get from them at E3, but throughout the year.

Look here I think it's a bad ideal for any gaming company to skip E3. To me E3 is still the best place for new gaming information and reveals. It puts you in front of the worlds stage where people who might not be hardcore gaming people get to see what's new and interesting to them. I'm not a big gamer at all and I watch E3 every year and I enjoy it because it's still the best place for gaming news all year. Think about like this, when the Xbox one got a chance to shine at E3 it broke the console because of the mistakes that Microsoft made. yet when the ps4 got introduced it made the console what it is today simply because sony capitalized on Microsoft's mistakes. If you are a hardcore gamer than E3 is not for you at all simply because hardcore gamer's play mostly on PC and lets face it PC is the best place for games all day long. It's so damn good that i'm building my own damn PC to game off of when I have time. Games look better on PC and play better on PC and no console can compete with a PC.

@notafan: Sony doesn't want to be associated with garbage political agendas that were going on E3. E3 for couple of years is more about everything else then video games and normal people got tired of it. Sony haves their own expo and shouldn't bend down for some lowlife garbage E3 crapshow. As for the rest. I suggest you to don't talk publically about things you have zero understanding of. Open your eyes and put your brain into a hear. For a start keep your dellusions for your self. "hardcore gamers" more like pretentious idiots who don't even know what an actual video game is. The most popular games on PC are GTA5, CSGO and LOL. If that is hardcore and considered gaming then please do world a favor and just kill your self. 99% don`t even run on PC properly and some don`t even work. Consoles were always a plug n play experience and where actual gamers play games instead of spending money on a idiotic failure such as a gaming PC. PC which is short for Permanent Cancer. While people play games idiots waste time and money on a PC and play unfinished broken garbage and competitive pointless crap. The typical mindset of idiots having a competition of who have the bigger p---s while the girl runs away with some random man and these don't get any. With other words while you show off your PC master pretentious shitrace drama a smart person plays actual games on a console without hassle. Think about it, if you have with what to think that is. Goodbye.

@airrwof: Sony is corrupt itself so they should be right at home lol. E3 is not the problem ,The problem is this make shift notion that people want to see Microsoft run out of E3 because of whatever they believe that Microsoft is the big bad wolf. While I could argue that Sony is the big bad wolf here not Microsoft and a lot people on that world stage knows it. E3 is a product of pure entertainment not politics. If we went back to the days of Sega and Nintendo when people where civil all this would go away and by the way Microsoft has done wonders for the gaming community that people just don't want to admit to. I will miss Sony at E3 but eventually they will comeback they always do.

Hahaha, heeeee, Sony disrespects their fans again. So the millions of dollars they get from loyal fans is not enough? I mean yea it will cost them a bit to enter, but it is free & cheap advertisement for them like no other way. So they want to miss out on the yearly biggest free advertisement, yet they want to "participating in hundreds of consumer events across the globe," come on don't BS us.

I'm buying an XB SX and I can play the hundreds of backwards compatible gems and few exclusives that I cannot play on the PS, plus I play more multiplayer multi-console games anyways. I'll buy a PS5 when the market is over flooded with used ones & the games become $10-15 each. In the mean time I sleep well knowing all my XBX games will get ported over and I am very grateful for that, thanks M$ for giving power to the players!!!!

@just1mohr: Nice lol you keep playing your old games because that's exactly why Sony outsold the Xbox One by over two to one. I'm here to play new games. That's why I buy NEW consoles.

And to correct you, they didn't disrespect anyone. Just because Sony doesn't attend E3 doesn't mean they're not releasing information and trailers for new games. E3 is an investor's conference and seeing as how the PS4 is officially the second best selling console of all time, I'd say Sony is doing perfectly well and doesn't need to attend E3 to bring attention to future projects.

The last time Sony separated itself from the rest of the gaming industry, they created the Playstation and became the undisputed console king ever since. Here’s to wishing Sony well as they try to do it again.

@barcaazul: Sure it's better. Why do they need to waste money going to E3 when they can just do their own thing 3-4 times a year and give us the same info we would get from E3? Most people who get info on future gaming don't go to E3, since it's an industry event. So that means that any games that might be playable won't matter to most people anyway. So what does that leave? Game trailers, news, and videos, which we can all get year round anyway. They don't need a big, expensive event to give us those things.

I don't know what the point of E3 is anymore. Nintendo's got it right with their Nintendo Direct vids and I hope that's the way others go too. I'd rather watch those that are direct and to the point rather than watching assholes on stage try to pander to people while I watch a crowd of dumbfucks get up out of their seats and cheer over the announcement of cosmetic-only microtransactions in their full priced game. **** that noise.

@jinzo9988: Nintendo has Nintendo Direct, Xbox has Inside Xbox and had its own X019 event, but they both are still participating in E3. It doesn't make any sense for Sony to skip the biggest gaming event of the year...

@suiliv: I agree that Sony should at least have a presence at E3, no matter how small. However, they’re not showing because they really don’t have to.

Nintendo doesn’t make anything except a few first party games and extremely quirky console systems. They absolutely NEED to show up.

Microsoft doesn’t really make anything except Xbox consoles and crappy software. It’s very beneficial for MS to show up, but probably not a dire necessity.

Sony is an electronics giant and can do whatever they want...for now.

@jsprunk: "Microsoft doesn't make anything..." Microsoft has a market cap of almost 1.24 TRILLION while Sony only has a market cap of 92 billion. By this metric, Microsoft is one of the largest (if not the largest) companies in the world. If you look at revenue for 2019, again Microsoft blows Sony out of the water. What I'm saying is that neither company really "needs" to show up. It's in the spirit of gaming and the excitement that E3 generates (used to generate?) that makes it beneficial to attend.

For the players....... pffffft hahahahaha.

Seriously though wow just wow. Talk about a slap in the face for all the ponies out there. Last year was bad enough but this year, the year they launch a new console and celebrate 25 years of playstation, really? Wow. I’d hate to be a pony right now.

Sony are probably doing this to save money and id say they don’t want showcase the ps5 coz they know it’s way weaker than the XSX. They wouldn’t want to detail the much weaker specs in front of millions of people.

Doesn’t make much difference to me though I watch mainly for Xbox and Ninty.

@gamerbum: Since when does being the weaker console have anything to do with how well they do? Clearly you're young and ignorant. The PS1 was inferior to the N64 but guess which one is the best selling console of all time? The PS4 is weaker than the XB1 but guess who outsold the Xbox two to one?

It's like Xbox fanboys buy their consoles and the last thing they do is play games. The GAMES are what it's all about. Maybe if Microsoft had a decent library of exclusives you would see that instead of making yourself look like a moronic fanboy on the internet.

Now it became more clear.

So, ESA proposed this year E3 to focus more on celebrities and influencers and gaming took a back seat. Maybe like NBA players playing their balls in the stage while talking how awesome their gaming experience is or maybe another Keanu Reeves came out while the audiences screaming you're breathtaking.

Meanwhile, the important gaming announcement already got leak one week before the show.

Yeah no wonder Sony didn't have a second thought about they not gonna attend E3. The show is pretty much became irrelevant which is sad cause some of E3 press con are pretty hype.

THEY ARE CREATING HYPE. Everyone is talking about Sony second year in a row without them even showing up. This is genius marketing. It also talks volumes about their confidence. They didn't show up at E3 last year because they had "nothing to show". PS4 still selling like hotcakes. You can bet everything you own that they have enough PS5 and new games announcements this year to have their own show without having to play in the little E3 sandbox that MS feels so comfy in.

May I ask why people but this silly ninja approved thing...anyways, tbh is it really a sad loss that Sony does not want to attend, I don't think I really missed them last year, yes we get drip feed of stuff..I am sure they will come up with something before the lauch and besides we probably get trailers with Sony gamplay on it..if not there is always Gamescom which always seems better..

Andy approved :)

Doesn’t phase me 1 bit as we all pretty much know what to expect and what the final outcome will be…Sony on top of course. E3 doesn’t sell consoles but rather weak entertainment… there will be more teasing/reveals soon enough.

@tingtong: to be honest with you E3 does sell consoles. for the people who aren't really hardcore gamer's that do watch E3 it can make or break a console. These companies don't spend that kinda money on a expo that doesn't come with some results. I think Sony skipping E3 is a bad ideal personally but i don't tend to buy Sony appliances just because I think they over priced for what you get most of the time.

Extremely disappointed in Sony’s decision this year to once again sit out gaming’s biggest night. What frustrates me even more I think is the fact that they have new hardware and are ushering in a new gen to boot.

I get the whole “State of Play” short bursts throughout the year that are events that focus and showcase all things Sony but the hype and excitement generated from E3 has traditionally been (and will still probably be.) something few other events can contend with.

In fact, the amount of traffic in the comments sections alone across the various big name media sites seems to skyrocket during E3 week. The same can’t be said for Sony’s state of play events.

I’m sure focusing exclusively on their own brand through a digital outlet saves Sony hordes of cash they would otherwise be spending on a venue and an engaging live conference but sitting out on another year when your biggest competitor is going all in guns a blazing could potentially come back to haunt Sony come launch day.
