Now Playing: Which VR Headset is Right for You?

PlayStation VR -- $400

No Caption Provided

Of the three major VR headsets currently out, PlayStation VR is the only one designed to specifically work on a console: the PS4. It supports head tracking, controller tracking, and mobility tracking. The headset can also be used as a second screen to play non-VR games and watch movies.

PlayStation VR's base package only comes with the headset, a processing unit, and all the necessary connection cables. Its other accessories--the PlayStation Camera (required) and Move controllers--must be purchased separately. Fortunately, Sony has confirmed that a bundle including both accessories is available in North American regions. PlayStation VR users will be able to download The Playroom VR for free at launch. PlayStation VR Worlds is also included for those who purchase the bundle.

For more details, check out our PlayStation VR review.

It's worth noting that some games are available on other software platforms as well.

HTC Vive -- $800

No Caption Provided

The HTC Vive takes a different approach from its competitors. In addition to offering seated VR experiences, Vive actively encourages the user to stand up and move around. It's equipped with IR emitters that allow a wide range of physical movement, and a a front-facing camera allows you to see the real world around you, thus avoiding non-VR collisions with solid objects. The package comes with the headset, two wireless motion controllers, two base stations, a link box to connect to your PC, and a pair of Vive earbuds. It only works for PC.

Rather than being a dedicated gaming headset, Gear VR is more passive with simple games and video experiences. The Vive is still the best option, although I'm holding off on buying one until Bethesda releases Fallout 4: VR for it next year. Room-scale tracking clearly gave the Vive and edge over the Rift, and a wireless connectivity upgrade option seems likely for a 1H 2017 release as well.

Things could have turned out differently for Oculus if they had launched the Touch controllers with the Rift. But their $200 price tag for the controllers puts the full VR package on par with the Vive in pricing, so I think the future is looking pretty bleak for Oculus.

As for PSVR, it's market share advantage exists on paper only. Sony has a lot of work to do to incentivize the 40 million PS4 owners to drop $500 on the headset and controllers/camera. But in reality, the PS4 Pro is the only console that devs are likely to create full-fledged VR content for.

@troll_elite: They don't have to convince 40 million of people, even 10% would be a huge financial success. That's the Sony strength, they have pool of 40million of people sitting on sony's PS4 and can watch ads for Sony VR right there when they switch it on. Sony will do great with the VR. I am just not convinced about the whole VR in general, at least not how it is done today with the giant scuba glasses on your face.

@troll_elite: I don't think so. it sold out in hours. So, I think it's a good option if you want it-- and it has the best price point. also, it's 400, not 500. Most people will just use the current controller

I have an Oculus. It mainly catches dust. I recommend you all wait another 2 years or so. Seriously, I could not wait and always dreamed of VR since the 80s. I was amazed with Oculus for a week but the lack in games (fun games), quickly turned it into a dust catching device.

@phili878: Dude get a Vive. Then buy raw data and Vanishing Realms. The rift is good for being seated but with the Vives room scale it's a different world! Yes rift is getting room scale as well, but I've heard it's going to be just over half the size for rift. I'm not kidding you Vive is absolutely amazing!

@phili878: Project Cars + Racing Seat+ T300rs Wheel & pedals + Rift CV1 has easily kept me entertained for the last 5 weeks!!! (not to mention Assetto Corsa and iRacing). Amazing experience. I race so much better online in VR. I'm always among the front runners. Love it Love it Love it!! Hardly tried anything else, like Elite which I own and is supposed to be good also.

@justin12421: Nope, i'd much rather my rift thanks. With a 2D screen you cant simply look over your shoulder to see where that car in your blind spot is, you cant quickly glance at your wing mirrors out of the corner of your eye, You cant look to the left or right whilst going around the corner and stay on the racing line because you lose track of exactly which direction you're going.

In VR it's much easier to tell exactly where your car is on track and what direction you're facing no matter what direction you look in, within reason of course. Just like real life.

In 2D you have a much harder time telling exactly how far away corners are and you rely on using landmarks for braking points much more. You cant tell where that troublesome dip in the road on a corner is until you hit it. you cant tell how steep the hill you're on is supposed to be.

In all honesty I dont think I ever managed to do a clean lap of the full 13 mile nurburgring in 2D, mainly because of all the hills and negative camber roads which are hard to read. Where as in VR I was doing clean laps STRAIGHT AWAY, first attempt and getting faster times than ever before. Hell I love racing around that circuit even in the rain which is something I've always avoided before because I couldn't stand a chance of staying on the track.

Even force feedback through the wheel seems to be better because before using my 42" tv there was the odd unexpected knock coming through the wheel for no apparent reason, or there seemed to be more shaking when losing it on a bend than seemed necessary. In VR you notice the cars body roll much more because it really feels like the ceiling of the car is inches above you and you notice how you bump up into it like you would in real life, you can see the slight dips/bumps in the road that causes those knocks and rattles through the wheel so it just seems to make it feel more real.

I would have a extremely hard time going back to 2D racing no matter what size the screen is. After VR it just seems primitive.

@jayskoon93: Rift and Vive. Rift already ships with an Xbox One controller. It's also confirmed a major VR title is in the works for Scorpio.

I already played Halo 5 on Xbox One using my Rift DK2 as a giant curved screen

If i were going to sink cash into VR it would probably be with the VIVE.

I know a lot of console guys will flock to the PSVR since its the only option for them but the resolution is too low and having to buy a PS4 pro just to get a solid experience is crap.

One good thing about the PSVR is the price which i hope forces HTC and Oculus to lower the cost of their competing visors.

@metalhead9806: It has never been stated that you need a PS4 Pro to play PSVR. When I demoed the PSVR it was running on a regular PS4 and ran great. As for the resolution, it looked just as good as the VIVE. If you haven't tried both like I have you can't say any different.

@simplytheebest: I have played the same games on PSVR and VIVE and noticed no difference what so ever. Obviously a PC can render "better" visuals. Who cares? Sorry you are butt hurt that some people don't only care about graphics. PSVR is really fun, as is the VIVE.

I have tried the Vive and PSVR, I have to say the PSVR is the best option. They both are amazing though. The main problem with the Vive is turning a room into a mess of chords and cameras. And the cost obviously.

Why does everyone insist on saying the psvr cost 399? Sure there is a 399 base package that doesn't come with everything you need to use the psvr, but in reality it's 499.

@sodapoppimpski: something tells me the amount of people that would need to get a pc with specs able to run vr are significantly less than the amount of people that dont already have the camera and move adaptions. go ahead and calculate the next option, oculous, and add the price of a pc that can minimally run vr.

@sodapoppimpski: I'm paying $399 for mine. I've had a camera for 2 years now I bought new for $40. And I don't care about using the move controllers yet or ever. A ps4 is also required so you may as well throw that in the price if you're trying to inflate it. The rift is technically $800 if you include the controllers. But they are optional just as the move controllers are.

@joshrmeyer: you are 1 of the few that own the camera so you will only be paying $440 plus the move sticks you will eventually have to get. Im not trying to inflate it is my point, if you are buying the psvr chances are you already own the ps4 just like if you are even looking to buy the rift or vive you already own the pc to run it. my point is the majority of people who already own a ps4 do not own the camera & sticks which are required to make the psvr even work, so then, no the price is not $399 like is being advertised now is it?

@sodapoppimpski: The move sticks are not necessary, only for game that must have them and can't use controller (and those are usually lame anyway, no one is going to hold two sticks in front for hours). me personally i would not even buy a game that needs the move controllers, 2D or VR.

@sodapoppimpski: Yeah I get your point, it should be labeled as $440... they really should have another bundle without the move controllers for $450 with whatever that disc you get with the $500 bundle. I forget what the % was on ps4 owners owning a camera but I think it was around 40%. I bought mine awhile ago knowing I'd need it for psvr or morpheus at the time.

@sodapoppimpski: It was 900,000 right after launch, and has dropped in price since then and people like myself have been snagging them up on sales for the last 2 years knowing they need them for psvr. 20 million sounds high... let's say 10 million have them... and 90% of owners bought it for psvr... thats 9 million psvr units about to be sold. We can even go lower and say half the people bought them for psvr... that's still 5 million psvrs about to be out in the wild... that's a huge number. It should get a lot of support from developers. Then again, the kinect sold a ton and never got support it needed so who knows lol

@sodapoppimpski: what does one have to do with the other? I mean, above is an article comparing 3 VR headsets, I'd like to think they're somewhat in the same basket considering how narrow the vr field is right now. I also haven't seen a proprietary pc model alongside oculous, or rift, which have even more extreme cases of missing required hardware. just curious as to why psvr was your target is all.

@canarsie616: yes they are all vr, and the rift and vive specs are better then the psvr. To run the psvr you need the camera and the move sticks to make it work which the majority of people do not have. So what that means is that the psvr is not 399 like its being stated that is my point and that is a fact.

@sodapoppimpski: Oculous and vive are technological superiors to PSVR, lets not confuse that with them being better. I can say with confidence you haven't spent a reasonable amount of time with all 3, so lets leave opinion out of it. yes a camera is required, and the move controllers are optional for some titles, and needed for others. You are also completely missing the fact that PSVR is an adaptation. the reasoning that you are using suggest that all products must be sold in bundles and nothing else. So what you're implying is that when a company markets, for example, a $50 dollar controller for a $50 dollar console, should they just market the price as $100?

@sodapoppimpski: Fact is you don't need the move controllers... maybe on some games, but not sure on that... oculus uses a xbox controller. The other $200 controllers are optional. Fact is you do need a camera, a ps4, and a ds4 controller... I don't even think a tv is required lol.

@joshrmeyer: The Oculous must have some pretty hefty processing power to only require the headset and an xbox controller. I could have sworn it also needed a pc with processing power that would cost the average consumer no less than $700, and that's barely meeting minimum requirements.

@fartypants: not sure if you're being sarcastic, so ill just go ahead and inform you. you do need a PC for Oculous or Vive, a rather powerful (expensive) PC at that. and it is currently not compatible with Xbox nor has it been announced to be in the future. Xbox integration has been speculated however

I ended up getting the Oculus Rift pretty early on in the year and so far I like it. I still have yet to try out the Vive, (don't have one yet), but I really want to find out what its like first hand. I've mostly heard good things about it. PS VR looks like its going to be pretty awesome from what I have heard about it as well.

But do they support Trump or Hilary? That's what I'm really concerned about.
