Now Playing: Which VR Headset is Right for You?

PlayStation VR -- $400

No Caption Provided

Of the three major VR headsets currently out, PlayStation VR is the only one designed to specifically work on a console: the PS4. It supports head tracking, controller tracking, and mobility tracking. The headset can also be used as a second screen to play non-VR games and watch movies.

PlayStation VR's base package only comes with the headset, a processing unit, and all the necessary connection cables. Its other accessories--the PlayStation Camera (required) and Move controllers--must be purchased separately. Fortunately, Sony has confirmed that a bundle including both accessories is available in North American regions. PlayStation VR users will be able to download The Playroom VR for free at launch. PlayStation VR Worlds is also included for those who purchase the bundle.

For more details, check out our PlayStation VR review.

It's worth noting that some games are available on other software platforms as well.

HTC Vive -- $800

No Caption Provided

The HTC Vive takes a different approach from its competitors. In addition to offering seated VR experiences, Vive actively encourages the user to stand up and move around. It's equipped with IR emitters that allow a wide range of physical movement, and a a front-facing camera allows you to see the real world around you, thus avoiding non-VR collisions with solid objects. The package comes with the headset, two wireless motion controllers, two base stations, a link box to connect to your PC, and a pair of Vive earbuds. It only works for PC.

Rather than being a dedicated gaming headset, Gear VR is more passive with simple games and video experiences. It seems like cool tech but unless the games are cool this will be a sinking ship. The tech isn't the problem, it's that nobody has a clue how to make good content for it that keeps people engaged for more than a couple hours. The best content for VR right now is an interesting novelty that doesn't last very long.

Maybe it could still work in an arcade setting, where people just pay for the novelty experience. Asking people to pay for the full cost of the headset, make room and adjustments in their homes? That's not practical if the content doesn't get significantly better.

@beantownsean: Most PC gamers that aren't bottom dwellers have decent rigs. I don't expect you console peasants to understand that. And, you're as poor as street beggars so you won't even be able to afford the PS VR anyway, so what's the point. Until you get a decent job and can afford to be a part of our glorious master race, then you should just get back to serving my meals while addressing me as Lord.

@pcmaster_race:

The level of assumption you're making is pure ignorance. PC is my preferred platform and have been building my own rigs since 1999.

My main rig is an i5 3570K @ 4GHz paired with R9 390, which is a "decent" rig. The GTX 970 has the greatest market penetration of any single card and the 390 compares well with it.

I also have a intel 4th Gen mini-ITX machine and an older AMD AM3+ rig, both are capable of running any game out today.

You should find a new hobby, you give PC gamers a bad name.

@beantownsean: Your peasantry is made even more apparent by your paltry PC specs. I would make the switch to console if I were you and save yourself the hassle. You're doing it all wrong. The poor excuses of machines you listed are crying under the burgeoning load of new games that have to make due with settings being dialed down in order to be sufficiently playable. I am your Lord and I have spoken.

My whole issue is the content for VR at this point, A guy at digital foundry who has the vive, the oculus said he likes VR, but after the coolness of the VR aspect wears off the games are not very interesting. He said if you played those VR games on your TV or monitor they would be boring. And thats exactly how I imagined it to be. If you are an early adopter and don't mind playing tech demo's and have plenty of money to burn then go for it and take a chance that your investment will work out.

@guitarist1980: Your talking about the PC market here, way more investements put into PSVR and mainstream console games in general. Sony will drive the VR market to new hights in the coming months/years.

@ojmstr: I hope it does well. But FB alone has invested 250 million dollars into the Rift and they said they will at least double that amount of money in the next few years. I am not sure sony has that kind of money to burn. Last I knew Sony as a company was in the red. I know Sony has divided up its company, I am assuming the gaming portion is doing well.

If you have the money, like supporting new tech with minimal content, and a PC HTC all the way

If you have the money, like supporting new tech with minimal content, well PSVR is your only option until we see what Scorpio does, but that console + VR isn't going to be less than $800/1000 in 2017 and it will be what VR is today with PCs if that because Scorpio is already being made with yesterday's PC hand me down power.

For those that must have the AAA content? Doubt you'll be happy until we have the power of Quad Titans and 4K/120fps per eye and 4 years of developers making games for it... so that places you in about 2022/2025 CE.

Point being... don't look at VR as must play if you're on a budget and expect the crisp and grand titles of today's non VR titles...

You have to like it because it's new, exciting, and finally ground breaking for its playability and potential... it nor its content is close to being refined...

I've tried VR and can only say... it's in its playable infancy, but the coolest thing I've picked up since the switch from a flip phone to the original iPhone... its amazing for its potential... you're paying to be a part of its development, not its establishment

The headsets are not as big of a problem as the type of content is pure garbage. I mean really there are no "I have to play games" steam allows anything that is a cash grab to be sold on their store. There are tons of shooter wannabe's, sword gun, bow games. There's a train game where you shoot the same candy and gingerbread man over and over and the cost is up there and there's a diving game that is more worth the price because you can spend more time doing other things like exploring. I was thinking there might be an awesome haunted house game come out that is more than a stupid shooter try to be. Really there's a few good games but most all of them are just garbage cash grabs.

I like how this article fails to mention that you have to purchase the Move Controllers and Camera for the PSVR if you don't own them (That's around $200), and the Touch controllers for the Oculus Rift (that's $200+ dollars).

@petcow: I like how you failed to actually read the article as it does mention them.

'Its other accessories--the PlayStation Camera (required) and Move controllers--must be purchased separately.'

The Move controllers are only required for some games, and the games themselves make this quite clear on the packaging that they are mandatory.

@petcow: I like how your post fails to mention how you failed math...

Or are you not aware that oculus had cost $200 LESS without the touch?

And the psvflr BUNDLE including camera, control and game only costs $500...

I think the dealbreaker for VR is a "must have" game that would simply play far better in VR than without, not something heavy hammered in the VR. Something that everyone will be talking about and everyone will want to play it - sort of GTA for VR. I looked at the current Sony VR lineup and there is no single game I want to play.

Every technology that hyped "extraordinary change of way" we do things and then just add restrictions on my previous habits eventually dies in my glorified MEH hole. I am pointing at you: 3D TV, Kinect, Leap Motion - they all sounded much much cooler before I bought them but become very boring very quickly and not the items of worship all the 13 years old youtubers were hyped them to be.

The good thing is, waiting couple of months is a win-win situation, we will either have that "must have" game or can get those VR headsets cheap on craiglist. Really, I see no downside of waiting....

Costs a hell of a lot more than a Vive now...

It's not that hard... PASS (On PlayStation VR). It's Oculus FOR THE WIN: because I analyze the product for what it does instead of some ridiculously stupid appreciation of who the ceo is or does.

It doesn't sound weird at all (if you know how to read).

Waiting for the next gen of headsets which won't be for another 2-3 years. They could at least put one of today's cell phone screens in there which looks way better than the screen door they all use now.

"Which VR headset are you going to purchase? Let us know in the comments below"

None, but if I were willing to throw out hundreds of dollars as a early adopter (hardware tester) I would have to choose the Sony. Already have a PS4 and my 55" LED TV is 1080P so the higher resolutions from the other ones is a waste. The one from Valve would be second and I wouldn't touch Oculus, Facebook can kiss my *&*&^.

Will give this a year or two to mature, mores software to choose from, more refined. One or more of these early ones will very likely fizzle and die and if you went that way your out of some good cash.
