PlayStation Vita Slim Review

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The original PlayStation Vita is a remarkable gaming handheld. It's powerful, with an amazing 5-inch OLED display, and features a wide range of inputs, including two analog sticks and a pair of touchscreens. As great as it is, Sony thinks it could be better, and it's beginning to rapidly phase out the original Vita in favor of a slimmer model with a few notable improvements. Apart from being refined in a number of ways, the new Vita Slim is also more consumer friendly than the barebones Vita of old; for the time being, every new Vita Slim is bundled with a free memory card (8GB) and a free voucher for Borderlands 2 and its 6 DLC packs. With the Slim redesign, the Vita has never been sleeker, or a better value, but its stunning OLED screen has been replaced by a standard LCD panel, and it's possible that people with an eye for detail may find the downgrade too noticeable to overlook.

Though the original Vita is a strong piece of hardware, it has its share of issues that needed to be addressed. The battery life is great in standby mode, but during gameplay, it typically taps out around the four-hour mark. The lackluster battery performance was compounded by the system's proprietary charging port. It negates the viability of common USB cables and requires a USB port with a data connection in order to accept a charge; common USB cables and wall chargers won't cut it.

Thankfully, Sony replaced the Vita's proprietary USB port with the now-common micro-USB standard. You no longer need a special Vita-only cable, you don't need to rely on finicky port restrictions, and common USB wall chargers are now your Vita's best friend. Plus, the battery in the new Vita is reported to last at least an hour longer than the old model, despite having the same capacity.

While it's good to see that the Vita's new screen doesn't hamper its battery life, it does have a negative impact on the overall Vita experience. Sure, LCD panels are cheaper to produce, which allows Sony to shave a few dollars off of the Vita price tag, but with a persistent backlight, colors look washed out on the LCD panel. If you've used the original Vita in any capacity, you know how impressive the OLED display can be, and the moment you look at the new model in action, you instantly recognize that it fails to produce images that are as crisp or vibrant as those of the original. If you've never used the old model, the shift in screen technology won't stand out as much, but you still won't find the display on the new Vita particularly impressive.

...you still won't find the display on the new Vita particularly impressive.

Still, you can find improvements in other areas that make the new Vita an attractive proposition. The new USB port is one, but if you look around, you find that the buttons have also been improved--in particular the start, select, and PlayStation home buttons. These three buttons were previously ovoid and sat flush with the surface, making them unusually difficult to press. Now, they are represented like any other button: they're circular and raised up, making them far easier to use, especially when you're trying to take screenshots by pressing the start and home buttons at the same time.

The new Vita also comes with 1GB of built-in memory, which means that you don't need to have a memory card in order to link a PSN account and play games, but oddly, you can't use the internal storage and the included 8GB memory card at the same time.

Finally, the new Vita is 20 percent slimmer and 15 percent lighter than the old model. The original Vita was comfortable as is, but the Vita Slim is even more welcoming now that it's less bulky, and because it incorporates softer materials throughout the chassis.

There's no getting around the fact that the new Vita has an inferior screen compared to its predecessor, but it's easy to appreciate the reduction in size, weight, and price. Plus, the changes made to the USB port and the buttons make it a much friendlier system to use overall. Even though they won't look as good, the same games that worked on the old Vita work on the new model, so at the end of the day, the new Vita is worth considering for all of its advantages if you aren't bothered by the new screen.

I don't think the picture quality has changed quite so drastically. I own both, and really, the change is more of a sidegrade, as both screens have their ups and downs.

Are there downsides? Conditionally, yes. Even with the 3DS XL vs. the 3DS, but also with the Vita vs. Vita Slim. But not in all situations. And my girlfriend uses whichever I'm not using when I'm using the other, haha.

Although honestly, she's more into Uncharted on PS3 since she'd never played it. So right now, it's a moot point. Haha.

And yes, I also own the PSP1000 and 2000, but I never did get the 3000 and I have no interest in the Go. Need that UMD drive! And I don't like the slide out controls; very uncomfortable design!

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> The biggest benefit is better quality under direct sunlight. In well-lit rooms, the LCD screen of the slim is actually superior. Otherwise, the actual colors and such are better in darker rooms on the OLED.

I've also noticed a slight bit less ghosting/motion blur (the bad kind) on the LCD screen vs. the OLED, but it could be the games I'm playing (Valhalla Knights, for example).

"Minor" picture quality changes my ass.

Going for plastic build also hurt the damn thing, but anything to make the Vita cheaper, I guess.

To be honest I would of preferred if sony never went into handheld market space; that is Nintendos stomping ground and even they are feeling the heat from smartphones and tablets. the fact is people don't really want to play full home console type experiences on the go; they would prefer quick games that they can do in bite sized chucks if need be.

I do, it's why the 3DS became the first handheld console I ever purchased and why I want a Vita. Yes I still love portable type games but I love the fact that handhelds are now capable of putting out home console type games.

Even if Nintendo dominates doesn't mean Sony can't nor shouldn't have a presence. They're offering something different. Also while the DS absolutely dominated, the PSP still managed to sell well over 70m.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> The problem is the mass market which these things must sell don't. Sony cannot afford to throw good money after bad chasing a marketshare which will never come and hasn't thus far shown any interest in wanting one. its pretty pointless to cannibalize ps4 sales money to prop up the vita.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> You're not likely to get many more AAA console-like experiences on Vita. Most people would rather play those on a console or PC as it turns out. The Vita's strength comes from indies and JRPG's, and it's extended library of PS1, PSP, and PS Mobile software. And then of course there's Remote Play with PS4.

The games haven't dried up from Sony either, with a Gravity Rush sequel coming, along with Freedom Wars, Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines, Lemmings Touch, and others on the way. Can expect a new announcement or two at E3 next month, but it's clear their focus is on PS4.

That what it seems like and to be honest, I don't mind. The PSP's best titles were mostly 3rd party exclusives and that's how it is right now with the Vita and those are the titles I want.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>I think sony have already started the process of shelving the system; this can be seen by the lack of AAA games on the system now and in the pipeline for the future. At this point they are doing the microsoft approach with the 360 at the end of its lifespan basically; not making really any AAA exclusives for the system and instead letting third parties perform the lions share of game release's for the system. Even the vita article last week said something to the effect of the install base not being their for AAA titles to release on the system.

Vita sales have been steadily improving and I'm sure you've heard this in Nintendo related articles, but dropping a system is never a good thing and would damage Sony's reputation. If anything, the Vita can be their last handheld but until then, they need to support it even if it means selling no more than say 20m Vita's in its entire lifespan.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>come on man.... We know the vita will never be that cheap. At the price point its sellling at it has to go toe to toe with the 3ds which comes from a company that is known in the handheld space with game franchises designed for it ( pokemon, animal crossing, etc.). People prefer the low tech experiences of the 3ds to the home console lite experiences of the vita I think that is saying something about the taste of handheld gamers don't you?

<< LINK REMOVED >> what? Nintendo is having plenty of competition from mobile phones and tablets alone. Sony cannot really afford to throw good money after bad and the vita at this point is dead in the water which even sony themselves are starting to admit which is why there is a lack of AAA titles on the system. Sony's strength has always been on the home console market and they should double down where the majority of their fanbase lies; thats not foolishness its common sense.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Just because you have the opportunity to do something doesn't mean that you should go ahead and actually do it. The 3ds will likely end its life as the lowest selling handheld system in nintendo's history right now its at 45 million; there is a good chance that a new handheld from nintendo will release in 2016 -2017 with final numbers somewhere in the mid 60 million range remember last year the 3ds only moved around 12 million units and this was with the heavy hitters such as pokemon, monster hunter, etc. hitting the system. These numbers are the way they are because of the advent of mobile gaming taking away nintendo' s consumer base in the handheld market. And yes I am insisting that sony bow out because for sony engaging any longer in the handheld space is becoming a fools errand specially now that the Ps4 is selling out and sony is in a dire situation financially. Why continue to waste money in a market in which the vita is failing?

Your initial post read like Sony should bow out to let the supposed struggling Nintendo handheld deal with Smartphones so the competition is one sided. I pointed out that that's not how competition works or should work. It's a free market - everyone can make a handheld or smartphone if they want. The better product will win.

Other than specs on a piece of paper or pure "bragging rights", I can hardly tell the difference on resolution from the slim which I own, vs the previous vita system. I'm pretty happy with a longer battery life and a lighter, more comfortable model.

Wow, a whole 8gb card comes with the new Vita, you can store maybe two full Vita games on that. My smartphone has twice that storage space.

The screen killed it for me. I did a lot of research looking up impressions and finally decided to get the original model a couple weeks ago. While I'm not the biggest Sony fan...I've got to say I haven't been this giddy over a new console since I got the N64 as a kid. The Vita is pretty freaking amazing. I like the weight, the size, the feel, the screen...it is just right for me and I am NOT giving it up for the slim. That being said, the slim is still a good idea...I just wish that screen quality wasn't dropped. Anyway, nice to have a lower entry point for people who were on the fence.

I've had my Vita since Launch, never had any problems. Loved all of my games which is a library over 60+ games. I use it as much as I use my computer, as a matter of fact its always next to me and my PC. I think it all boils down to what YOU as a person like, I don't like the 3DS that I have but I don't get bitched out about it because I don't care what other people think about what I play watch or do.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well, if you want Sony to continue to support the Vita for a long time, you'd be smart to spend a little more and buy it new. Buying it used is the same as illegally downloading music from your favorite bands in regards to supporting the companies you like.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yea, it's a little apples to oranges, but the comparison is still valid. If you want to support the companies that make the products you buy, BUY. IT. NEW. This goes for everything: video games, cd's, speakers, cars, etc...the list can go on and on. I ain't smoking nothing, it's common sense.

* Still not very *portable (*see smartphones)

* High priced proprietary memory cards are a joke when compared to standard memory cards

* 1g internal memory is not enough to store anything other than one game or a decent music library

* Lousy software if JRPGs aren't your thing - and extremely lackluster overall compared to IoS & Nintendo offerings

Honestly what REALLY bothers me is this proprietary crap. Their memory cards are so freaking expensive...and THAT'S unacceptable. I can get a 64GB SD card for about 20 bucks. Why do I have to pay 150 for this one? I love everything about the console...except THAT.

Ubisoft had a decent offering for the PSP. All of their Tom Clancy games made an appearance - some were good, some very bad (RS Vegas - yikes!). I have a great Burnout game too. But on the Vita - it's tumbleweed city.
