Executive who oversaw PlayStation 4's trailblazing success in Britain will leave in September.

Update: Online retail giant Amazon has confirmed that it has appointed Gara as "director of PC," according MCV.

Fergal Gara, the managing director of the PlayStation business in the UK and Ireland, has announced he will resign from the company.

Sony explained the executive, whose professional roots are in retail, has decided "to pursue a new professional venture." It was not stated whether Gara would stay in the games industry.

Warwick Light, who is currently general manager of PlayStation across the Nordics and East Europe, has been announced as Gara's successor.

Gara was appointed to the managing director role in September 2011. In his four years in charge, Sony's position in the UK has changed dramatically, from a challenged market position with the PlayStation 3, to a dominant one with the PlayStation 4.

PlayStation Europe boss Jim Ryan described Gara as "an extremely talented leader."

He continued: "In his four years managing the UK business, Gara has significantly strengthened the brand and made countless contributions to our success. He has also served as a key member of the European executive team, helping to steer PlayStation to even greater heights. We are extremely grateful for his dedication and for the legacy that he leaves.”

Announcing his farewell, Gara said: "I have had a fantastic time leading the PlayStation business in the UK and Ireland over the past four years. I am very grateful for having had this opportunity and I want to thank my team who have been amazing and, of course, Jim, for his support along with the wider PlayStation family who have helped make this period as successful as it has been."
