PlayStation Teases "Big Game Announcements" For Paris Games Week Event

A lot of news is coming, it seems.

Sony has teased its upcoming Paris Games Week press conference. In a tweet today, the company said PlayStation fans can expect "big game announcements" and other unspecified "updates" during the show.

PlayStation Live From Paris Games Week, the name of Sony's briefing at the show, will be held on October 30. The show kicks off at 3 PM GMT in Paris, which is 8 AM PT and 11 AM ET in America. For Australians, the show kicks off at 2 AM AEST on Halloween.

In a blog post, Sony teased that it will have a "slew of updates and announcements" to share. Additionally, there will be a post-show event in which Sony will share more "details and info" on other .... things.

Paris Games Week is often a big show for Sony. Some of its announcements in past years have included things like the reveal of Uncharted 4's multiplayer mode, new footage of Horizon Zero Dawn, Street Fighter V's release date and Quantic Dream's latest game, Detroit: Become Human.

The timing of Sony's Paris Games Week conference puts it just a couple months before Sony's PlayStation Experience celebration in California, USA, where the platform holder typically holds another conference full of trailers and more announcements. That event runs from December 9 to December 10.

Sony did not have a briefing at Gamescom in August (Microsoft did), so this will be the first big-time announcement event from Sony since E3 in June.

@gamingdevil800: And VR mode would be a nice bonus, though unlikely. Also a FromSoftware announcement would make me happy, though if that was to happen it will more likely be in the Playstation Experience event.

I just want some more release dates. New game announcements are nice, but I want more information on upcoming games I'm already excited for.

@doctor_mg: 100% this. My biggest criticism with Sonys E3 was that too many game were/are slated for 2018 without any firm release dates. Also not enough games announced were coming before the end of the year which was kinda disappointing:(

@ryuburger: My issue with release dates is that no one sticks to them any more. I'd rather have a release window of sometime in 2018 than be geared up for a specific date only to have it delayed.

Honestly, I'd almost prefer we just see gameplay/trailers for games and have them say "Oh, by the way, this comes out next month." That'll get me more hyped than seeing "Coming November 10, 2017" then a few months before "Coming December 12, 2017." What's the point of getting a release date if that date isn't even when it releases?

While a part of me is excited to see just what Sony has under wraps I can't help but feel that this is the usual sales pitch given for any upcoming trade show.

There's no doubt in my mind that we will see a handful of new announcements but as far as them pertaining to big name studios or highly sought after games I'm more skeptical. I'm sure we might see one or 2 games that make us sit back and say "Oh, wow. Didn't expect that" but I can't help but think that for the most part Sony is saving its "big guns" for PSX at the end of the year (possibly some announcements at the VGA's.).

Still, that's not going to prevent me from tuning in and seeing just what they have in store come Halloween.

@videogameninja: Not to mention there's still games they've announced a long while ago that we still have no idea of like Shenmue III or Death Stranding; it's become very annoying how it's become a habit of theirs to have games announced so far ahead in advance really.

@ahyl88: It does sell consoles though and Sony's games do tend to actually be developed unlike some of MS' announcements.

@Barighm: Oh totally, I was sold on the PS4, until I saw how relatively spartan its launch was; plenty of games yes, but so many of them are third parties and therefore could be bought on the PS3 or Xbox 360 at the time, while Knack and Killzone weren't exactly "must haves". The droughts, and the abundance of remasters was very annoying; I didn't get a PS4 until about a year ago. So it kinda cheapened the whole thing and teasing the games so early on I feel diminishes the games' impact when they're so far away from release anyway. Square Enix is just as guilty of this with Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy Versus XIII (which we know became XV); KH III was announced over four years ago and is still nowhere near release.

@Barighm: @ahyl88: My brother and I have an ongoing joke. PS motto is greatness awaits which fits because games are announced then releases 4-5 years later. MS announces something and if it doesn't come out that year then it's cancelled

@ryanthegeneral: Yeah pretty much! Death Stranding is infuriating cos it's been over a year since its announcement teaser and we've still got no idea what on earth it's about or what kind of game it is, which they only started development for earlier this year. And I've a feeling The Last of Us Part II will be on the future PlayStation console as well, given how far away that game is coming out.
