Psyonix's hit soccer-with-cars game Rocket League, which was originally released in 2015, came out on top for PlayStation 4 in North America, outperforming 2016 blockbusters like Battlefield 1 and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. Unlike those games, Rocket League is a $20 game that was discounted a number of times during the year.

Rounding out the top five best-sellers on PS4 were Battlefield 1, Minecraft, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, and The Division.

On PS3, the top five best-selling games, in order, were Minecraft, The Last of Us, Grand Theft Auto V, LittleBigPlanet 3, and Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare. Job Simulator was the most-downloaded PlayStation VR game, while Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth came out on top for PlayStation Vita.

Sony also today announced the top-performers for December, with Ark: Survival Evolved landing in the No. 1 position on PS4. Go to the PlayStation Blog to see a full rundown of December's most-download PlayStation Store games.

You can visit the European PlayStation Blog to see the most-downloaded games in that region for December and all of 2016.

So if infinite Warfare was 4th out of the Year and only was released at start of november, wow thats a lot of sales in the short time. It nearly beat Battlefield 1, which was out for longer.

@Spiritbomb2012: only a couple weeks longer. More impressive would be final Fantasy which came oute late december

    Avatar image for puaemerson

That's a misleading statement - Rocket League was free earlier this year and is no indication of actual sales.

@puaemerson: Rocket League was free in 2015, not 2016. Which makes this all the more fascinating.

Rocket League is a classic, well deserved.

@punkerfrank: To each his own I suppose. I personally paid for it and have found it severely lacking thus far. I will try to out once more, but I'm not expecting much.

@SprSynJn: My praise mainly comes from the core gameplay. At worse keep the next bigger budget version, which i'm sure will eventually come, on your radar.

Minecraft in the Top 3 of all three platforms. Where are all those players?

Good to see The Last of Us on both PS4 & PS3 lists. Great game.

@novaprime1985: For you. I quit half way through. Its very hard to think of something that bored me more than Last of us or generally ND cutscene snoozefests.

@edinko: not everyone will love it.

Good to see Severed make it (just about) onto the Vita list. Great game.
