PlayStation State Of Play August 6: Every PS5 And PS4 Game Shown

While third-party developers might provide updates on PS5 titles, the majority of the event will be PS4 and PSVR-focused.

Sony's latest State of Play event took place on August 6. But while all eyes are on PS5 as we prepare to usher in the next generation, the event mostly focused on PS4 content. This included a look at games that were previously announced, but we also learned release dates and even saw a new version of one of last generation's most beloved indie titles. PlayStation VR even got some love with an amazing take on a classic stealth franchise.

You can watch the stream right here and check out the announcements and reveals below. We also provide some information on the games shown, including all-new game announcements.

What Was Shown And Announced

Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time

Toys For Bob opened the show with a look at Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, showing off the area Insanity Beach. It also highlighted wall-running and other abilities in the platforming as well as the new look for the characters. Outfits have also been added, and you can earn them throughout the game. There are no microtransactions, either, and you'll be able to play as multiple characters, including Dingodile. There is also a new "N. Verted mode" that changes up the feel of the game. It looks to blend classic Crash gameplay with new-school design choices, and it has plenty of callbacks for fans.

Hitman 3

IO Interactive made an appearance at the event with Hitman 3. The game will feature a PlayStation VR mode in first-person perspective, giving you a whole new way to experience its creative assassinations. All three games' content will support the mode. Yes, you'll be able to do every single mission in VR from the previous two games, too.

Braid: Anniversary Edition

The next game shown during the presentation featured live-action footage--or something resembling it--and featured a several examples of time progressing and regressing. As it turns out, the creative trailer was for Braid: Anniversary Edition, and it is coming out in 2021. Areas have been changed to make them look more like paintings.

The Pathless

Giant Squid's The Pathless was shown with gameplay captured on a PS5. A mythic adventure game set in a forest, it features a creative archery mechanic that fills a meter used for quickly traversing across the landscape. Timing replaces aiming down sights in the traditional sense, allowing you to stay in constant motion. You can also fly by making use of a bird friend, but you need to pet it in order to keep it in top shape.

Spelunky 2

The long-awaited Spelunky 2 popped up during State of Play, and creator Derek Yu discussed how the development team balanced including new features while understanding what made it work before. The sequel will include online multiplayer and you'll be building an in-game community as you discover more characters. You'll also find hidden passages and can choose from branching paths as you progress. The game releases September 15.

Aeon Must Die

A game by Limestone Games and Focus Home Interactive, Aeon Must Die is an intense 2D action game with a Saturday morning cartoon aesthetic. It looks to be a dark and very stylish take on the genre, and it includes vehicular sequence and plenty of demonic enemies. The game will be releasing on PS4.

Anno Mutationem

An adventure game featuring 2D and 3D segments and a unique mix of pixel and 3D art, Anno Mutationem is an intense melee-focused adventure that looks to put a heavy emphasis on story.

Bugsnax

We couldn't go a whole presentation without Bugsnax, and it appeared about halfway through. The game features a first-person point of view as you, a journalist, investigate the island and learn about the various Bugsnax occupying it. You'll need to feed characters their favorites, and even make use of traps to capture certain creatures. The game will have a physical map to help you stay on track, as well.

Star Wars: Vader Immortal

Coming to PSVR after previously launching on Oculus devices, Star Wars: Vader Immortal will let you master the force and your lightsaber skills as you battle against the legendary sith lord Darth Vader. It's releasing on August 25.

Control

One of the most acclaimed games of last year, Control is back with new DLC. Awe is the second expansion and it will be available this month. It looks to deliver even more mind-bending action and mystery, just like we saw in the base game.

The Pedestrian

A quirky platforming game that makes use of signs and pictures, you play as a little stick figure person in xx. The game also features puzzle elements as you attempt to make a path, and it's coming to PS4 in 2021.

Hood: Outlaws & Legends

A new PS5 game, Hood: Outlaws & Legends is from Sumo Newcastle and Focus Home Interactive. The medieval game is dark and dreary, and it features "wraiths" who brag about being able to bypass defenses to strike their enemies. They promise to take back what was stolen and consider themselves heroes.

TemTem

The Pokemon-like TemTem was featured, and it's coming to PS5. Previously gaining traction on PC, the game features online play and an easy-to-use communication system so players can interact with each other. It is coming in 2021.

GodFall

The action-RPG Godfall received a new gameplay demonstration to end the show. Captured on a PS5 development kit, the gameplay showed off a fast-moving combat system that utilizes dashing to move in and out of danger. It supports cooperative play with up to two others, and the world is split up into Earth, Water, Air, and Fire realms. There are no microtransactions in the game, and there is a "mad god" waiting to be challenged. You'll be rewarded for aggressive play, and there are five different weapon classes to try out.

Microsoft is also expected to hold another Xbox event sometime in August, hot on the heels of its late July presentation that saw the gameplay reveal of Halo Infinite. It has been suggested that Microsoft's event will be focused on its heavily-rumored second next-gen console, codenamed Lockhart, but no official announcement has been made yet.

So much stuff in there I really would like to watch as an anime or cartoon more than play, like Aeon Must Die. I think I would watch the hell out of that cartoon if the sound and voicing continued at that quality. In an odd way it kinda makes me want to go back and re-watch Tron Uprising and Batman Beyond.

Outside of the - rather watch it as an anime - stuff, I think The Pedestrian was probably all that really interested me gameplay wise. Don't get me wrong I would absolutely throw in Star Wars: Vader Immortal for some short burst fun but I'm not buying a PSVR for the privilege.

One thing that drives me nuts that I see over and over from the Devs showings and Console showings is this 2005 streaming quality that gets displayed over and over when watching highly detailed games. Seriously, WTF! Why in in 2020 am I still seeing this crap. Yes I totally want to play Godfall from that blurry piece of crap you showed me. Please update the codecs on whatever software or archaic capture card you're using.

PS I'll comment on Hood: Outlaws & Legends when we get some actual gameplay.

Not sure why everyone is so upset with this state of play. It was reiterated multiple times by Sony that it wasn't focused on PS5 next gen but smaller gaming experiences like Spelunky and Pathless. Sony literally had another state of play less than 2 months ago with impressive showings from Spiderman Miles Morales, Ghostwire, Gran Turismo 7,Demon Souls, Ratchet and Clank, Horizon Forbidden West, and even a new Oddworld. I get that these games are not as mind blowing as the AAA games but they do have a place in our current gaming environment and ultimately give us more choices and what to play in the future.

Since Jim Ryan took over the Sony Gaming Division, every event have felt less and less what PlayStation used to be and more PowerPoint presentation.

@johnny0779: Does anyone even have time for these long-ass presentations? Just read about them after and look at the trailers that seem interesting.

I thought it was bad when they brought on their own commentators. Ryan Clements is a nice guy who cares about games but I felt bad watching him be a talking head at PSX. Almost all the presentations are cringeworthy. Kinect, Wii Music, the dude with the flute, Mr Caffeine, it's all garbage.

If I do have some time and want to see it with commentary I will watch someone else talk over the stream from a web site I enjoy so they can make fun of the marketing BS they do.

@girlusocrazy: Well many people can also say "who has time to be commenting about games at GameSpot"....and here we are.

The use of time is relative to those who find certain stuff interesting enough to care.

We will be getting a PS5, and not the XseriesX. (we have gaming PCs for the xbox side)

I will say this though, There is only like one, or two PS5 games at launch that seem enticing at all. Most of the ones I look forward to aren't even gonna see the light of day until next year at the earliest. Xbox on the other hand has far more interesting games coming out much sooner than that of most of PS5's enticing games. (Glad we have our PCs)

Sony will need to play catch-up in the games department from launch. This is half the reason why we will not be getting a PS5 at launch, but sometime next year when Horizon 2 launches.

I mean Halo Infinite, Second Extinction, The Medium, The Ascent, all are more interesting than Godfall... Hopefully 2021 is a better year for Sony's PS5 releases.

Kind of disappointing, but there are some good looking games. Spelunky 2 is a must play for me, as I love the first game and have been waiting for a sequel. Genshin Impact looks good. Hood seems interesting, that could be fun. I've been wanting a co-op stealth game, so hopefully that is what it is. Pathless looks like an interesting and enjoyable game.

However, I honestly don't know why Godfall is being hyped up. It looks boring and generic. PS5 has some good looking launch titles and Godfall looks like one of the least interesting.

All in for genshin Impact, been waiting for it. Hitman 3 will be automatic buy when it is on sale(when all episodes are out). Godfall will probably be the first game to buy when ps5 arrives, just hope there's more to it than what we've seen, looks good visually tho.

@ember_to_flame: I always feel like the worlds are too big with games like Genshin. I got lost (metaphorically) in Perfect World years back and since then I've tried to play games that scale back and enrich the space more.

Absolute garbage. Not one game I’m interested in. Crash Bandicoot? Crash Bandicoot is a Mario wannabe. sonys effort for a mascot. Crap.

Braid? That’s an X360 game for crying out loud. No. Really disappointed with this playstation showing. We are only a few months away from next gen and they showed us nothing of ps5.

sony should be roasted for this. And I don’t care that they already said no ps5 stuff. Who ever made that decision should be fired.

They want us to transition from ps4 to ps5 right? And we got nothing. They should absolutely be taken to task for this pathetic showing but nooooooo, the pony SDF lap it up as per usual.

sony have done nothing for me to want to upgrade my ps4 to ps5.

XseX looks way better than ps5. Not only has it got 3TF of power over ps5 (ps5 can’t run at 10.2TF. It’s everyday TFlop count is 9.2 just as the leaks and DF said it was. The CPU and GPU can’t operate simultaneously at peak clocks. One or the other will have to throttle back. Cerny/sony have pulled the wool over fans eyes in the effort to close the power gap with XseX) it’s going to have the largest game library a console has ever launched with. Thousands of Xbox games all looking and running better than ever with added HDR. All done by the console itself no extra work needed by the devs.

ps5 can’t do that. sony will have to pay the devs to do the extra work. You think sony are going to do that? Err nope! Where as the XseX does it all.

Then there’s Gamepass and Xcloud. Xbox is giving us way more for our money. It’s better value by far.

Sony really have dropped the ball. Weaker console weaker services and less games at launch. They really need to do something special to answer back but I doubt they have anything or else we would have seen it by now. Psvr 2 ain’t gonna cut it if that’s what they’ve got.

You really should take a stroll between Xbox and PS comments sections back to back and it'll be really clear that's not true. I seldom have to defend the PS from trolls but I'm always wallowing in it in the Xbox threads.

Obviously GamerBum is often the exception.

@bababooey12: Obviously it's just me personally, but it's always been the same. There's never been an Xbox game that has warranted me purchasing an Xbox. And any game I might be interested in for the system also ends up coming out on PC, so if I want it, I just get it for my laptop.

@gamerbum: True, I wish Sony matched Xbox's power, but the fact remains that Xbox has very few desirable games at launch, and dropped the ball this generation. I kinda was happy about vader immortal coming to PSVR but no way im dishing out 100+ dollars to buy two move controllers just to hold a fake light saber, that too this close to PS5 launch.

@notjm: I'm putting them side by side and I can't help but feel Xbox so far is looking better out the gate. I knew it was going to be a strong showing from Xbox this year but I would have expected Sony to meet them with a Hammer.

I still think Ratchet and Clank is my most anticipated PS5 title. Outside of that I'm really going to need some gameplay from Sony on their first party exclusives.

"I kinda was happy about vader immortal coming to PSVR but no way im dishing out 100+ dollars to buy two move controllers just to hold a fake light saber"

Where the hell are you finding the PSVR for $100+. I can buy a PS4 Pro for the price of that thing. With $100+ implying less than $200+, if that were the case I would have bought that damn thing already. Then I'd still be mad cause I hate wearing stuff on my head. lol I'd like my PS holo room please.

Very underwhelming show.

I feel the first Spiderman was enough and I'd love to see Insomniac go back to Resistance. So much lore potential and room for crazy sci-fi exploration in that franchise. The first one was amazing for the time. 2nd one was too mainstream but introduced nice weapons. Third one was solid. Retribution on the PSP was great, even though it was made by Sony Bend. Burning skies was a little mediocre. Made by nihilistic.

At the very least hand the franchise off to a competent dev with some FPS background.

And bring God of War back to its roots. None of that old dad Kratos Throw axe recall axe throw axe recall axe throw axe recall axe throw axe recall axe listen to a head talking for hours and hours (wish I could have decapitated him all over again seriously). Kratos is a merciless killing machine, not a babysitter. Combat is too slow and heavy, map is a mess, skills are boring, gear system is boring, Valkyries are.... Are what? Why?? GoW was all about speedy combat flow. I am a huge fan of the GoW series but I am definitely not buying a GoW 2 that sticks to the formula of the last one. Love Cory Barlog but he messed that last one up. Somebody go throw a pile of cash to Stig Asmussen to bring him back to GoW.

About this state of play, my guess is that Sony will start releasing good exclusives in about 2 years, Nothing good has been announced (except for HZD) but with everything we've been given in the past, I can't possible believe that they're done bringing the greatness. I can give them a 2 year break, that's fine, they deserve it. But they better bring the ''Play'' back within a couple years because they have a fanbase banking on their past.

@Keaze_: I've been saying for a while now that I'm totally down for a new Resistance title. That and Killzone, but back to the split screen co-op. Killzone: Shadowfall was my favorite Killzone and the first real next gen title I played this gen, but I hated not being able to share the experience with friends.

It is looking like a slow start for Sony, I'm still holding out that they've got more up their sleeves.

Tons of games, but I was somewhat excited for Crash 4 only. Jak & Daxter or Sly would have been super exciting. Looks like we are getting next gen power to play Switch Indie games instead & at this point it is getting pathetic!!!! I knew to set my expectations low, but I did not know I will be buried in the dirt!!!

May just wait a year to get XBsX at $400, as the backwards compatibility is worth it alone!. But I swear, I just almost don't feel like getting next gen to play garbage games and I am seriously thinking about getting a 2080Ti which will be more versatile & allow me to play souped up emulation as well. Don't know about you guys, but after MS getting rid of GOLD for $60 I will be voting for services & games with my lack of money!!!!

Any one of these games I would have been really excited for: Dead Space, EDF, Alien Colonial Marines, Terminator Salvation, Ridge Racer 6, Asphalt, HAWX, Top Gun, Serious Sam, TMNT, 007, Ex Zeus, MechAssault clone, StarFox clone, F-Zero clone, Resistance, or Killzone.

@just1mohr: "I swear, I just almost don't feel like getting next gen to play garbage games".

I think making a claim that next-gen games are garbage is premature.

I believe that MS has confirmed that they are not getting rid of Gold for $60. I will need to dbl-check that.

EDIT: I thought MS was trying to indicate yesterday that Gold was not changing, despite rumors to the contrary. But after looking at the article again, I really can't make heads or tails of it. It's all very vague and confusing to me.

@thecupidstunts: Well, let me clarify. There are some great games I am looking forward to on the XB exclusive end, games such as Crossfire X, Bright Memory Infinite & the Turok clone Second Extinction and of course gameplay of Halo I.. But I can play those on XB1x and there is no real sense of urgency to get XBsX right away. So for the first time ever I am not looking forward to a new console the way I did in the past.

Now I hope MS brings out video comparisons between XB360 & XB1 games on XBsX with ray tracing and all the perks. I hope the difference is significant & just like a RTX2080ti is to a PC setup and then I might get inspired to get it first day again.

Don't know, but seems like they are forcing us into Gamepass as a cheaper alternative now, but I am not paying anymore.
