PlayStation Now Public Beta Starts Today on PS4 With 100+ Games; Check Out This Walkthrough Video

Game streaming service now available to anyone on PlayStation 4 in the United States and Canada.

Sony's much-anticipated game streaming service, PlayStation Now, is now available through a public beta in the United States and Canada for the PlayStation 4. The service has been in closed beta since January, and will come to other platforms and regions sometime in the future.

To help get you up to speed on everything the PlayStation Now beta has to offer, Sony released a walkthrough video featuring commentary from Jack Buser, who is senior director for the service. More than 100 games are available through PlayStation Now currently, and you can rent them for a variety of durations (as short as four hours) and for a range of prices (as low as $1.99).

If you rent a game and then want to purchase the full product later on, your progress will be saved through Sony's cloud servers, allowing you to pick up where you left off.

The first thing you'll want to do when you fire up the PlayStation Now beta (available in the PlayStation Store on PS4) is access the "Connection Test." This will determine if your broadband connection is beefy enough to run PlayStation Now and get good results. Sony recommends at least a 5Mbps connection for an optimal experience on PlayStation Now.

PlayStation Now supports both wired and wireless connection types, but Buser says a wired connection is preferable because it is often more stable than wireless.

In addition, Buser stressed that the PlayStation Now beta you see today is just that, a beta. It's "early days," he says, adding that it is important that users share feedback with Sony so they can make the product better in the long run. "We're going to be listening closely to what the gamers tell us, and [PlayStation Now] will evolve over time."

Though you will only find a la carte rental options on PlayStation Now today, Buser reiterated that Sony is planning to offer a Netflix-style subscription plan sometime in the future. "It's definitely something [that's] in the works. So stay tuned for that," he said.

There should be discounted prices for PS+ users and the standard price for non PS+ users

I will start using the PS now when there is a good priced subscription (10/month or less/or include in PS Plus). people need to stop complaining when its just in beta...

So why wouldn't I use Gamefly? Much larger selection of games across multiple platforms, I can play them for as long as I want, and it's an actual copy instead of streaming. Besides, what game is 4 hours nowadays?

The most exciting feature with PS Now is that now you can have lag spikes on single-player games. IT'S THE FUTURE!

You just need to be online during use, not 24/7.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Same thing, you need to be connected at any given time to use. So how is that better then a mandatory check ins vs non stop connection?

One you need to be online to use the service, the other you need to be just to use the console.

Has the phrase "value for money" gone extinct? It stopped existing as soon as we hit the seventh generation of consoles.

Enough with comparing this to the EA model...they are one developer. Are you going to pay $6 a month for EA, then another $6 for Square, then another $6 for Activision...and so on and so on. It is not the same thing. EA is currently offering only FOUR games. They don't make that many games per year and most of them are just retreads of previous versions. PS NOW has over 100 games...and it is still in BETA.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You´re right, both services are not comparable. EA offers new games; Sony old games.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Yep. And BF4 is about 10 months old. Oh yeah...you also don't get any DLC when you use the EA program unless you pay for that separately. That should be a fun online experience...or are you playing BF4 just for the campaign? hahaha

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Right now, they are offering the most recent entries of Madden, Fifa and Battlefield.

@dani3po @bobloblaw17 sony is offering the latest offering of metal gear and ratchet in clank just from that photo

i dont knwo what the 100 games consist of but i am sure there are more

also if the only difference you see in the service is the games then you are more dumb than you let on

also for some reason EA games from last October seem to be considered "new" to you

anyways please stop arguing you're only making a fool of yourself

Avatar image for bobloblaw17

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> So you think the Madden offering will be updated when the next one releases next month? You really think that instead of buying their new $60 game you can just pay $30 per year for this service instead? Guess you never need to buy another EA sports game....I am sure that is their business model.

Avatar image for dani3po
dani3po

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Of coruse not. It is a cheaper option to play EA games a few months after they are released.

Avatar image for xXxIRyanxXx
xXxIRyanxXx

<< LINK REMOVED >> If you enjoy EA games $30 a year is like $2.50 a month, and for unlimited access to the games in their library, which will have new games added to it like you said its still in BETA.

Avatar image for bobloblaw17
bobloblaw17

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> And when will they add these games? When the new Madden comes out next month...you think they will update to that one for this service, or keep Madden 25. These will just be the "older" current gen titles that they will let you use. You can't download a 360 game to your XONE, no matter what you think.

Avatar image for xXxIRyanxXx
xXxIRyanxXx

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I dont expect them to add Madden 15 the day its released, it would be stupid to think so, but by Christmas when a ton of people get the new sports game anyway isn't crazy. I never said you would ever be able to download 360 games to the One, EA is more then capable of redoing their biggest franchises like Mass Effect, Dead Space and Dragon Age and re release them on the One.

Avatar image for bobloblaw17
bobloblaw17

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Agreed. So this will probably be a running library of less than 10 games for $6 per month or $30 per year. Why are we comparing to a Sony offering that is "starting" at over 100 games?

Avatar image for xXxIRyanxXx
xXxIRyanxXx

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Sony is offering more games, but they are older and depending on how many days you rent the game the prices are crazy. PS Now with a subscription fee of like $5-10 a month would be worth it. It will also be interesting to see if EA games are offered as a part of PS Now.

Avatar image for drd7of14
drd7of14

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> They are older, but they also had games like Beyond: Two Souls, the Last of Us, and God of War: Ascension during the first phase. They still have newer games on the service, just not as BIG name ones, cause it's in BETA. I do expect New games that launch to be on the service right away.

The price point they have is only good for New $60 games.

Think about it this way, 7.99 for 3 months for Twisted Metal isn't a good option, cause the game can be had for around $5, but Destiny won't be dropped far from $60 for a while. Apart from borrowing it used at Gamestop, if you are okay with the PS3 version, streaming it for 3 months to play the game, and doing a full purchase later for the eventually reduced price is good, cause you have your fun, determine if you would purchase it, and then make a decision later.

This is the only scenario where the expensive price point they have works. For new AAA titles, to test them out, or play the main story, and get the game later on for multiplayer or whatnot at the eventually reduced retail price.

P.S.- Thought about this recently. Hope they do have "New" games offered on the service though, besides just SONY 1st party like Little Big Planet 3 or something like that.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Wait...so EA is giving (currently) 4 games for $6 and everyone is happy. Sony is supposed to give 100+ for $5-10? Get out.

Avatar image for xXxIRyanxXx
xXxIRyanxXx

@bobloblaw17 @xXxIRyanxXx Its $6 if you do it for a month, its better to just buy a year for $30, then its less then $2.50 a month. $5-10 for Sony's service would be reasonable on top of already paying for PS+, but the current prices show Sony doesn't know what reasonable is so they would probably charge $15-20.

Avatar image for bobloblaw17
bobloblaw17

<< LINK REMOVED >> You should check GameFly's prices. Also, is in know if for the XONE EA service you have to pay for Gold? Before I would give EA money for an entire year, I would expect them to be upfront about what games will be added in the future and when they will be added. Most people that like Madden, Fifa, and BF probably already own those games...or at least one or two of them. Those for games won't keep me busy for a year.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Titanfall should be one of the first games added, NHL 15, Need for Speed are other games. It got announced two days ago, it's in beta now once its time to launch it I am sure they will give us more details.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You cant be serious? Listen carefully since you cant comprehend....EA's catalog outweighs SONY'S. EA is offering a subscription based model that allows you play whatever whenever you want. It STARTS with a certain number of titles until they unlock more. DUH

Avatar image for bobloblaw17

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Hahaha. Sony is not only offering "Sony" games. Otherwise how do they have Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, etc available. Yeah, I doubt they will have any EA games....but yes, they have more to offer than EA. Also, has EA clearly stated than they will offer games from a previous generation, or just limited to current? For XONE you have a total of about 7-8 games to choose from.

@drd7of14 @mi_hung_lo @bobloblaw17 Sorry I am here right now....NOT IN THE FUTURE! Where's The Last Guardian? That was also "in the future." You're drinking the kool aid like a fanboy. If that business model was on the table, why would they revert to something totally opposite. Why? Because they want to see if the fish bite first

Avatar image for drd7of14

<< LINK REMOVED >> Oh, right. That's a good point. My entire point is entirely invalidated because it's not out Now. Good point. The things arguments out there...Because it's not out yet!

They are stress testing to see if it's feasible. Do you realize how much data they have to stream. There are those that could take advantage of that. There are so many problems with prime time hours killing their servers. Netflix doesn't even run well during late evening hours. Imagine a game? That has to worry about delay times.

I think they should've kept it separate from the PlayStation store. Make it clear that it is a completely different service, to avoid confusion.
