PlayStation Home Officially Closed

This is no April Fools' Day prank. After six years, Sony's online virtual world--PlayStation Home--is now officially closed. The virtual destination opened in 2008 and ceased operation on March 31.

The official shutdown is not a surprise, as Sony announced in September 2014 that the PlayStation 3 service would close on that date in the United States, Canada, and Europe.

PlayStation Home was first revealed at GDC in 2007. Pitched as a free, Second Life-style virtual world where you'd create a virtual version of yourself that could have an apartment, meet up with friends, socialize, and watch movies or play games, Home never met the full potential of what was originally outlined.

Although it attracted millions of users following its launch in 2008, numerous overhauls--including a relaunch in 2011 and the addition of game-themed content--never turned Home into what Sony hoped it would become.

My favorite memory of being on PlayStation Home is going to the Great Edo of Nippon for the first time.

I made a fat old man in Home and harassed all the spiky haired anime teens who hung out in there for real.

Never bothered with it.

RIP thing I played for about 8 minutes.

Avatar image for DrunkenPunk800

I downloaded it, messed with it for a few minutes, and never used it again.

I think it may have worked better if every PS3 came with a headset, like the 360. Typing with a controller is a chore.

Avatar image for b1ank

Feel like it had potential, but never came into fruition. A PS4 version may have worked better with the long downloads and stuff, owell RIP Home

I logged on Home once and that was when i bought my PS3, it didn't really appeal to me, too bad for people who enjoyed it that it's closed though.

Playing poker and chess was fun in it.

Home in japan is better, they put concerts there on stage at the plaza and still lots of people, I saw hatsune miku dancing

Sometimes I saw a gundam statue LOL

I only went in casino one or twice

I'm glad I never wasted money on this. It was always laggy and slow.

<< LINK REMOVED >> home was free....

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> It had micro transactions for cloths and houses.

Rest in peace!

It wasn't that bad. To be honest I only used it about 4-5 times total, but I remember I watched some movie and video-game trailers in a virtual theater and played a couple of mini-games and it was fun. The graphics were good too and the loading times reasonable.

I don't know why it failed so much. Maybe because other people felt like me and opened it only a handful of times and never touched it again.

<< LINK REMOVED >> For me I would rather play a game the play home, but it was good for what it was.

It was like watching a car crash in slow motion.

I spent a lot of time in Home, had a lot of fun and never spent a penny. I haven't been there in a while, but I will miss it a bit, especially the E3 Playstation Booth.

I hardly used PlayStation Home (and never bought anything), but the few times I did left a lasting impression. I created my own likeness of me and was glad to know it was "there", even if I wasn't using it myself. It felt a bit odd to say goodbye to myself.

Here's the two ways I decided to "celebrate" the last hours of Home:

Trashing my apartment (actually it was like that from the beginning ;-)

Waiting for the sunset that will never come:

looks like a virtual mall surrounded by video game ads

I remember using it for two months and never want to return to it afterwards. There was way too many guys pretending to be woman in there.

Avatar image for bigrod69

<< LINK REMOVED >> You need to be more tolerant.

Avatar image for blackothh

<< LINK REMOVED >> there are too many guys pretending to be women in the entirety of gaming....not just there lol

Avatar image for leeko_link

<< LINK REMOVED >> My girlfriend and I were using Home at the time, the creepy part is that most of her friends (thought they were woman because of the avatar they used) on Home were actually guys. I know because two of the guys were on my online friend list.

I remember when they announced it and it sounded really cool. Then I tried it and 30 mins later I knew I would never go back to it again.

Avatar image for egger7577

Same here. I was like yea this is pointless.

Avatar image for blackothh

<< LINK REMOVED >> is your avatar, card art from Ascension?

Avatar image for canuckbiker

I think I used home for a total of 10 minutes. Just not my thing.

Avatar image for playstationzone

Good times back first year than home got boring and people has waste a lot money on things. RIP Home

Avatar image for Ice-Cube

Good times..

The only time I ever used Home was to get free copies of Twisted Metal and Warhawk during that promotion they had for the PS4 reveal.

Avatar image for PayneKiller

Was a great item to have on PlayStation. I put a fair bit of time in home, was cool watching trailers and events from there and playing games like bowling and checkers against others. I haven't touched it in years probably but still sad it's getting shut down.

Avatar image for acefondu

I never logged into it once, I am weirdly proud of that. lol

Avatar image for Venture_Fanatic

Yeah you are weird, you make it sound like a STD.

Avatar image for acefondu

<< LINK REMOVED >> Not sure where you got that from my post, are STD's on your mind?

Avatar image for punksterdaddy

Do STD's usually affect the mind, I always thought it was elsewhere?

Avatar image for S001_PRIMAL

it had potential and was unfortunately squandered. i enjoyed my time on home. i just wish that sony didnt treat it as a separate game. it should have been like how it is for Microsoft...the avatar core features linked to your account like a wearable badge.

Avatar image for Get_Shorty

I was just waiting for the Beta to end so I can enjoy the finished product.

Avatar image for ztron370

I logged into Home one time and people were saying thing's that I can't repeat. Never went back.

Avatar image for Venture_Fanatic

I'm sorry to say that's true.

We'll have wait for the male species to grow up. LOLLOL like that will ever happen.

Avatar image for chippiez

<< LINK REMOVED >> The male gender, you mean?

Avatar image for Venture_Fanatic

No I mean species, cause they're like a totally different kind of animal.

Avatar image for soup-or-man

<< LINK REMOVED >> You might as well quit the internet in that case, heh.

Avatar image for vac

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I want to quit reality because of those things. Things will never change. And what's "reality" anyway? Some bunch of absolute nonsense humans made to feel superior and more self-righteous to those who live in fantasy.

Calling me "weak", "pathetic" and a "coward" will only prove my point. Yes, I am a coward and I love running away from battles that it's impossible to win, but I am not weak and I proved it many times in my lifetime. I know the fact that "pathetic" is a non-word and makes no sense, so it should be removed.

Well, I want to get out and create my personal virtual world where I can command at will and then forget everything except the thing that I command my world. I don't want to live here anymore and I don't want to die.

And don't tell me what I "need" like "reality check" because that's pure BS and I could care less.
