Now Playing: PlayStation Classic Video Review

The products discussed here were independently chosen by our editors. GameSpot may get a share of the revenue if you buy anything featured on our site.

Sony released the PlayStation Classic on December 3 for an MSRP of $100. That price was somewhat surprising, seeing as it was higher than Nintendo's NES and SNES Classics, which cost $60 and $80 respectively. The price isn't such a big problem right now, though, because most retailers currently have the PlayStation Classic marked down to $60. That's 40% off a product that released just last month.

PlayStation Classic is a miniature version of the original PlayStation console from 1995. It comes with 20 PS1 games loaded onto it and two full-sized controllers so you and a partner can play the games that support couch co-op. You can find the full list of the games included on the system below.

Deals this good don't tend to last long, so if you've had your eye on a PlayStation Classic, now is a good time to grab one. Fair warning, though: in GameSpot's PlayStation Classic review, critic Peter Brown wasn't thrilled with the retro console. "The PS Classic doesn't feel like a celebration of PlayStation's formative years the way Nintendo's systems do," he wrote.

Speaking of Nintendo's mini console series, if you want an NES or SNES Classic, you might want to pick it up soon, because Nintendo is about to cease production of the miniature consoles. In the meantime, you can still find them in stock at several retailers.

Just went to Best Buy to pick up my $20 Tracer figure, and saw they had 3 pallets filled 4’ high with PS Classics. Only 1 was missing from the corner.

I wasn’t going to do it, but I’m taking back the $100 PS Classic that “Santa” brought me and will be rebuying a $60 one from my Best Buy. I’m cheap and $40 is $40. And it’s an easy exchange.

(PS- the PS Classic isn’t as bad as all the non technical people are making it out to be (it’s getting the SWBF2 treatment, hence the firesale) and the ease of hacking makes it worth it.)

And another thing, would it have killed them to put in one single damn card reader- for those of us who .... YES ... still have memory cards !! Specifically FF7 saves just before a certain characters death or lvl 99 with knights of the round..

They obviously saved a shit load by skimping out on quality, and game selection. Could a card reader really added that much to the cost.

The resolution problem breaks this console, stuck at 55pal, with no turbo settings or adding anti aliasing after wards. On my HTPC in the living room Im using the psp emulator ppsspp -with suggested settings from psxe master which is just awesome including great screen fill, fps optimizer, color mangager, and controller support and the lovely option turbo.

all this does is allow games to be played on larger hdmi flat panel led lcd., with the controller of your choice. (Us the xbox 360 controller) It doesn't change the games, doesn't necessarily make them any better, just allows you to view them like they deserve to be 20+ years later. Like a good turn table today, it needs the tools to allow it to work with hardware of old while still being able to connect to modern systems.

Also the ps3 still does an amazing job playing all of the games that come with the classic above. But you do have to buy the games for a few dollars, no biggie. And you could probably find a ps3 for not much more then $60 now.

The PS1 Classic in design philosophy kinda reminds me of the R zone by Tiger. It copies something nintendo did what wasn't really good in the first place, and now they copied it and made it worse.

Would anyone get angry at me if I said I bought one? ...I'm a collector, as well as a fatalist. I got curious. And...yeeeah it's...pretty bad. It's not the idea of it is bad, it's just....poorly executed. I kept getting the feeling that Sony just rushed it out for the Holiday season. If given more time...and more licenses for better games for it's selection (Battle Arena Toshinden? Really?) I feel like this would've been a hot item for the holidays.

@EricShadow366: angry at you... never. these games are awesome though sony does need to love its classic fans with a proper system that plays its games really really well. I wonder why they didn't just re-optimize the PS-tv device, that played vita games, psp games, all of the old classics games, really really well and sold for $100 that went down quickly in price. It was like a Roku - needing a wireless controller, that plugged into your tv. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_TV

Shit they could have just put a grey box around their old ones and sold them. The above product, just not worth it, and not a way to present them to its fans new and old.

@jenovaschilld: Oh yeah! I remember the PS TV! I feel like if they refined that concept for the PSClassic, it would've been something special.

Sure, I do think that the games they do have on the PSClassic are good games. Rayman, Oddworld, Intelligence Qube, to name a few. But it feels like a missed opportunity to bring other good PS1 games on there, like Ape Escape or Medievil or Wipeout.

i can't believe how so many people on here are THAT ignorant. yea, half the stock games are bad and visual quality is bad, but have you not heard of mods or hacks? the hack scenes is bustling for the ps1 classic. they already loaded roms onto it, improved the sharpness of the image, implemented usb drive compatibility... heck, ds3 controller support isn't too far off. the hardware of the ps1 classic blows the nes/snes away and is comparable to the raspberry pi 3b+. at $60 it is totally worth it! sony will not be making more of these in the new year so it is best to get one while you can still find them at cheap prices... remember what happened to the vita tv?

@Xristophoros: Yeah, people are ignorant because they don’t hack their shit... ok. What Sony is selling to consumers is a ripoff, half assed product, they’re not marketing it as a hackable device, that’s something that almost EVERYONE doesn’t want to deal with. This thing IS a piece of shit out of the box, and not worth the price. You’re the ignorant one.

@Xristophoros: You clearly don’t have a good grasp on what ignorance is, so I’ll just leave that be. The difference is, the SNES and NES were excellent out of the box, and no one had to do anything to them to make them completely worth the asking price. Then, the small percentage of people, if people wanted to, could mod it and make it more robust.

You’re IGNORANCE doesn’t seem to let you understand that 99% of consumers are NEVER going to waste their time hacking or modding a product. That’s for uber nerds like yourself. Everyone else is going to ignore this product and go on about their lives, enjoying any other (easier) means of entertainment that is worth their time and money.

The PS Classic is a piece of shit out of the box, and arguably even after modding, and should have never been released.

Enjoy your product, and I’m glad you have enough free time and energy to mod and enjoy a product that most people don’t want to waste their time or money on.

Ignorance is bliss.

@dashaka: agree with much of your post, except for the the SNES and NES were excellent out of the box part.

There was alot of work put into emulating those games (23-30fps, 420i mono- stereo sound) for modern tvs. Not only that, they tested the games to make sure they worked right as well, see snes classic article. Yes the games are great, but the work put into making the snes classic work so smoothly was rightfully pointed out and praised by gaming journalists everywhere. It was not just an easy process.

Sony went for a quick cash grab by using poor manufacturing and emulating. They emulator used by the ps2, ps3, ps tv, psp all work much better.

@jenovaschilld: I’m confused, you said you don’t agree with me saying the SNES and NES classics were great out of the box, and then praise them. That’s what I meant by them being amazing “out of the box”. They’re fantastic.

@dashaka: it was, ' the The difference is, the SNES and NES were excellent out of the box, and no one had to do anything to them to make them completely worth the asking price.'

in that you emphasized Nintendo didn't have to put any work into making them compatible with today tvs and input/outputs which is not correct. There is no question the games are amazing as they were, are great games to begin with, since this is a article talking about ps classic games and why most of the comments regard the problems with how Sony took its games (also unarguably great games) and poorly implemented them on this platform (the classic).

It would seem most of your comments above and below are slanted and or uninformed, and your just spouting stupid shit just to troll others. Shame though, this is an important article and comments in regards to a hobby 'gaming' many of us hold dear. I will not be replying or commenting on your posts from here on.

@jenovaschilld: No, it’s your reading comprehension and ignorance that makes you think I’m spouting misinformation. If you would learn to read, you would know what I mean. I was saying that no one had to hack or mod the SNES or NES classic for them to be completely worth it, I never said anything about the work (or lack there of) that Nintendo put into the classic systems. It was a lot of work and optimization for them to be as they were at release. The PS Classic was a completely different story.

Nice job taking my quote and spinning it though.

“I will not be replying or commenting on your posts from here on.”

Lmao, that’s a nice way of saying “hey I’m wrong, and ignorant, so I’m just not going to defend my bullshit opinion anymore”.

Also, why do you have multiple GameSpot accounts? It’s confusing even yourself.

@dashaka: again, you seem pretty confused and spiteful for no other reason than you hate sony. no, the ps1 classic is not worth the full price. i picked it up at 60% off and at that price point it is worth it. just because YOU are too lazy to hack the device is irrelevant to the point that is being made. if one chooses to buy a ps1 classic at 60% off and goes through with hacking it, all of a sudden it is a GREAT device with all of your favourite games and not much else to complain about. your argument is like comparing a broken game on launch day and dismissing it even though it gets patched and improved upon. i am not excusing sony for their blunder here. they deserve to lose money on this device. they embarrassed themselves and their legacy. BUT, if you can get a ps1 classic at $60 and configure it to its potential, that is a great bargain. and you are completely wrong about the nes/snes classic... half the buyers of the device are tech enthusiasts and NERDS and were more than happy to hack the device and add their favourite games to it. also, here is a thought. you are on a gaming site discussing video games. you are a NERD yourself.

@Xristophoros: 60% off? Wrong, they’re 40% off. Secondly, patching a game is not even remotely the same, that requires no effort from the consumer. That’s like saying Sony will patch this later with more games and functions, and they’re not. You need to hack, and void your warrenty to make this thing even remotely worth it. Also, you’re confusing nerd with geek. Ignorance once again.

You’re also being ignorant by assuming I hate playstation, just because I hate one of their failed products, ONCE AGAIN, ignorance on your part. I happen to love my PS4 Pro, and I loved my PS4, PS3, Vita, PS2, and PSX.

We have Dino Crisis, Tomba!, Vagrant Story, Spyro, Crash, Tomb raider, Xenogears, The legend of Dragoon, Parasite eve, Gran turismo, Grandia, Castlevania, Digimon, Silent Hill, Chrono Trigger\Cross, Dragon quest, Alundra, Soul Reaver and many more.... but no, instead they add Super puzzle fighter, Mr Driller, jumping flash and more trash games nobody knows or\and don't care about, just pathetic, they don't know a damn thing about classics.

Seems everyone knew this was going to be a miserable failure, except Sony.

@Tidus1012: Your right in that the list of games for the 'revolutionary' 5th gen PS1 console is too numerous to count. Maybe a 95-97 top twenty classics list, then a 98-2001, with the option to add more game via usb port, wireless connection, etc.

Biggest failure was the poor hardware presentation, using PAL games, and of course the terrible emulator, when the ps2 emulator, ps3, ps tv, psp, vita, emulators they already own do so much better.

@Tidus1012: Yeah, if they had Spyro, Crash, Dino Crisis, Casltevania, Silent Hill, and Dragoon , then I would have defintely bought one. But out of the game they did choose, no thanks. Only Resident Evil, MGS, Twisted Metal, and FF7 interest me, but not enough to buy one.

I just hope this doesn't dissuade them from making another with the analog sticks this time, because Ape Escape is an amazing classic!

@Tidus1012: I would venture to say that licensing becomes an issue when you're trying to price the unit to make a profit but your roster of games can demand that you pay more in licensing than you're willing to part with or you're priced out of the market in being charged licensing fees up the ass for trying to have a really good roster of games. Nintendo simply wins here because usually the king of software development of a Nintendo console is Nintendo themselves, so it doesn't cost them anything to put their own games on their own Classic console. In this regard, what's Sony going to put on their console? Fucking Blasto? C-12?
