Now Playing: PlayStation Classic Games List Announced: Metal Gear Solid, GTA, And More - GS News Update

The PlayStation Classic is here, and it comes loaded with 20 original PlayStation games. Similar to Nintendo's NES and SNES Classics, the console itself is significantly smaller than the original, though the included replica controllers is full size. This piece of hardware is now available to purchase, having launched on December 3, exactly 24 years after the original system launched in Japan.

You can find the full game lineup below, but some of the highlights include Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms. The unit ships with an HDMI cable, USB cable, and two wired controllers. Notably, it does not come with an AC adapter.

It's also worth noting that it ships with replicas of the original PS1 controller, which doesn't have analog sticks. In 1997, Sony released the DualShock controller for PS1, which many people regard as a significant improvement, thanks to its two analog sticks and vibration function. There's no word yet on whether Sony will release DualShock controllers for the PlayStation Classic.

I just realized that I can download at least half of these (95% of the good ones) on my Vita... why would I waste money on the Playstation classic when I can take the games with me.

Extremely disappointing list.

Twisted Metal 1, instead of 2.

No Resident Evil 2. NO RESIDENT EVIL 2 (let that one sink in).

No Gran Turismo (the best selling game on the PS1).

No LoK Soul Reaver.

All I have to say is WTF.

Ah, Twisted Metal. Good times.

This is trash. They put mgs on it but dont have rumble or analog sticks. Why not just get a ps3 for $30 online and buy actual ps1 games to play on it. I can make a emulation box that runs 100s of ps1 games on it dirty cheap less than $100.

They should have Twisted Metal on there as well.

I used to always piss my friend off because I would use the fast white car that had homing missles that traveled through buildings, lol. I just had to avoid him long enough, lol. He would always call it my "cheap car."

Pre-ordered at GameStop if I don't like their selection of games Ian cancel and put it towards another game.

Why does GameSpot keep pushing older articles to the front page constantly? This was from last week or the one before, but they keep placing it at the front every few days.

@elementalweapon: its sonyspot.com. I got. I got a real ps1 the other day for $20 and got ps1 games for $5 eatch.

I hate to say this, but this is like pre-ordering a loot box. The pre-orders are live, yet the games that are supposed to be on the system are not even fully announced yet.

Is it already to late too pre-order these things across the board? What would you say is the most ideal store on this list of retailers which I would have the best chance getting one, if not the most easily on Night 1? I purchased my SNES Classic from a scalper so I'm trying to approach this Classic Edition with better planning this time / year. I've heard that while Target and Walmart attract a lot of scalpers, they are less likely to be gamer magnets and usually have less people waiting in line at 11:59 PM. Gamestop has to be the overall worst and quickest to sell out, hands down. Can anyone else offer any additional advice so I don't wind up paying a crook $130 on Ebay again?

i want to know the games, but still waiting on that n64 classic mini.

Avatar image for drunk_punk

@nintendians: I kind of want this too but the N64 classic might not hold up as well because of the single analog stick. I mean goldeneye was absolutly amazing when it came out but try playing it now and you will be frustrated that the analog stick doesn't control movement (it uses the C buttons) and you can't aim while moving, also there is a seperate button you need to push if you want to aim at all. Older platforms hold up because you don't need analog sticks for 2D games. With the game selection they picked for this playstation console it could work and the N64 classic could work too but I think some of the fan favorite N64 games should maybe not be included.

Avatar image for nintendians

@drunk_punk: for goldeneye, yeah your right about back then and going back to a single joystick for "first person shooter" feels off when you used to dual joystick. if nintendo doesn't include super mario 64, legend of zelda: ocarina of time, mario kart 64 and some i played back then, i guess it's not worth buying then, but i think they will add great ones to it, that doesn't belong to rare ltd.

Meh....you could just use a Emulator to play All PSX library instead and really? final fantasy Vii? I have that game on PSX ( The original) i used to have the PC version, i bough it on PS4 last year on a sell.

Atleast put some hard to get games or obscure titles like Legend of Dragoon or something.

I think i have all those games on my ps3 right now, which i still hook up and play the Tales of Games. For those who have not played these 5th gen classics this is a good buy, although a wired controller 20 yrs later ... . You could always buy a ps3 and purchase your classic games via the ps store which allows off line play. They are not very much and during flash sales only 1-$5 each.

As someone who has both SNES and NES classics, i’ll Probably pass on this one. Just about all the games I could want on it, I can play on the PSTV or PS3, with dualshocks.

I don't understand why they don't give you an AC adapter. What's with companies these days not giving you the cable to PLUG IT IN?!

Avatar image for xantufrog

@WarGreymon77: it does come with the cable to plug it in. You can plug it into almost anything and run it

@WarGreymon77: It comes with a Micro USB cable I believe. It likely can be powered by any micro USB phone charger. A lot of newer TV's also come with a USB port that provides the required 5 volts. You likely already have 3 different chargers you could use just laying around if you have been using anything but Apple products. It's just a way for them to save on costs of production. When I look at this and see what Microsoft and Nintendo are doing with backwards compatibility and services. I would avoid this like the plague. Sony needs a wake up call or they will be left behind. Their hubris nature is doing more damage than good at the moment.

Is this being released only in the US/Canada/Japan? I live over in the UK, and am hoping this doesn't come over super late like other releases have. :/
Edit: Never mind, I just found that it is being released here on the same day. A problem, though, is it is going to be £90. That is equivalent to $118 right now. Grr...

The other 15 games should be:

1. Castlevania SOTN

2. Metal Gear Solid

3. Vandal Hearts

4. Alundra

5. Klonoa: Door to Phantomile

6. Twisted Metal 2

7. Jet Moto

8. Final fantasy Tactics

9. Bushido Blade

10. Chrono Cross

11. Tenchu: Stealth Assassins

12. Syphon Filter

13. Colony Wars 2

14. Soul Edge

15. Silent Hill

It's a good mix of games, not too many RPG's altho I guess you could cut 1. Maybe a Sports game? Maybe the best Wipeout but then that may be too many racing games.

Why would I pre-order anything before knowing what all I’m getting in the product? $100 is already asking a lot for games I can easily get on PC.

Avatar image for Renunciation

@linkbuscus01: Why would I pre-order anything before knowing what all I’m getting in the product?

That's a rather common practice, though. Perhaps not so much for these retro mini-consoles, but people sure do pre-order games long before the games have been reviewed.

Yet, it is a valid question. Maybe people are worried about shortages of these physical products. Some people do like the thrill of gambling. There don't appear to be any pre-order incentives either, in this case.

It seems smarter to know what you're buying, for sure. But if people are into "faith-based purchases", that's what they're gonna do.

Avatar image for obnice

perhaps i am asking for too much here, but, can we get the list of games included before i pre-order?? seems shady to me

Enough with the classics systems already, and just put the games on virtual consoles, or BC like Xbox.

Hell, if they did that I wouldn't care if they keep releasing classic consoles.

Avatar image for Barighm

@Lach0121: I'd prefer a new run of PS3's with full BC through 2 and 1. I know a lot of people who want that.
