Now Playing: Sony Announces PlayStation Classic Mini Console, Sega Delays Genesis Mini - GS News Update

With Nintendo enjoying great success in the field, Sony has announced its own mini classic console. The company has announced the PlayStation Classic, a mini version of the original PlayStation. It comes with 20 "generation-defining" games, and it launches in December. It's available for pre-order now.

A complete list of games has not yet been announced. So far, the PlayStation Blog has only confirmed five titles: Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms. There's no indication of what genres or companies will be represented by the remaining 15.

The PlayStation Classic arrives on December 3, and that's a notable date. It's the day that the original PlayStation launched in 1994. The mini version is 45 percent smaller than the original PlayStation, and as you can see in the video, it captures the look of the system is based on, including its controllers.

It comes with an HDMI cable, a USB cable to power it (the AC adapter is sold separately), and two controllers. The system costs $100 USD, $130 CAD, and 9,980 yen. You can pre-order it now.

It's no surprise that Sony is getting into the "Classic" category of plug-and-play mini retro consoles. Nintendo is currently dominating the market, and overall, sales of plug-and-play consoles are up 400 percent year to date in the US. With Nintendo leading the way with its NES and SNES Classic devices, Sony wants a piece of the category.

In other retro console news, Sega today announced that its own Sega Genesis Mini has been delayed from 2018 to 2019.

1. Crash Bandicoot 3 : Warped (Easily The Best Of The Original Crash Series, Despite Being Part Of The 2017 N Sane Remake / Remaster). (In Respect To The Original Trilogy, This Is The One To Include).

2. Chrono Trigger (PS1 Version) / Chrono Cross (Chrono Cross Was The Game In The Series Which Defined The PS1 While Chrono Trigger Is Obviously More Associated With The SNES). Both Would Be A Solid Choice Because Of Nintendo Mysteriously Leaving Chrono Trigger Out Of The SNES Classic).

3. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (NOT THPS1). (Tony Hawk 2 Was The Definitive Skating Game For The PS1 And Superior To THPS1 From All Aspects). (I Would Accept A Reduced Soundtrack List Or A Different One Due To Music Rights).

4. Crash Team Racing (We Don't Even Have A Legitimate Remaster Or Remake Of This Yet And Sony Needs A Definitive Karting Game To Compete With Super Mario Kart On The SNES Classic And Mario Kart 64 On The Inevitable N64 Classic Edition).

5. Spyro 2 : Ripto's Rage or Spyro 3 : Year of the Dragon (Both Are Equally Good) (I'm Aware Of The 2018 Reignited Remake / Remaster Including Both Of These Games).

6. They need to include all 3 Main Installments of Final Fantasy on this, Not just FF7. FF8 and especially FF9 are equally essential. I'm sorry but nothing truly ever compares to the unconventional theme, the graphics style, the memorable, heartwarming characters, the unique setting, the fantastic music score, and the underlying humor of Final Fantasy 9. And not to mention the Cut-Scenes which were absolutely mind-blowing for its time.

7. Metal Gear Solid.

8. Syphon Filter 2 Or 3 (Both Are Decent 3rd Person Shooters With Imrpovements Over The Original).

9. Dino Crisis 1 Or 2 (Both Games Are Equally Good Except Somewhat Different).

10. Gran Turismo 2 (Late 90's Definition / Example Of Racing Simulators) (The Sequel Is Way More Refined Overall Than GT1).

11. Twisted Metal 3 (Vehicular Shooter / Combat) (Best In The Series Of The PS1 Era).

12. Resident Evil 2 Or 3 : Nemesis (Both Are Equally An Excellent Choice) (The Original Started It All But The Sequels Perfected Massively Over The Original Formula) (If I Could Only Choose One Among The Three, My Ultimate Choice Would Be Resident Evil 2 By A Slight Margin).

13. Oddworld 1 Or 2 (Both Are Equally Ingenious)

14. Time Crisis 1 With Guncon Support (A Total Fantasy. Obviously Is Never Going To Happen).

15. Mortal Kombat 3, 4, Or Trilogy.

16. Legend Of Mana

17. Castlevania : Symphony of The Night.

18. Silent Hill / Parasite Eve / Clock Tower (Essential Horror Game That's Alternative To Resident Evil).

19. Rayman 1 (None of The 3D Sequels For The Remainder Of The 5th Generation Could Compare To The Polish And The Detail Of The 2D Original).

20. *** Pocket Fighter *** (I Can't Request Any Game More Than This Except For Final Fantasy 9. A Hidden Gem. Awesome Last-Hour 2D Pixel Style Graphics Fighter And Has A Ton Of Obvious Humor). (Still, This Game Is No Laughing Matter.) (It Desperately Needs More Recognition, Awareness, And Needs To Be Remembered For Being An Underappreciated Work Of Art).

21. Tales Of Destiny 1 (The Reason Why Tales Of Destiny 2 Became So Rare / Expensive Is Because The Sequel Was Designed More Respectively For The PS2) (Save TOD2 For The PS2 Classic).

22. Mega Man 8

23. Ridge Racer 1 (PS1 Arcade Port) And Ridge Racer Revolution (PS1 Renamed Version Of Ridge Racer 2) (I Liked The More Vibrant / Colorful Outrun-Inspired Style Of The Original Ridge Racer And Ridge Racer 2 Over The More Neutral / Plain Graphics Style In Ridge Racer Type 4 And Later Ridge Racer Releases That Followed).

24. Marvel Vs. Capcom : Clash Of Super Heroes.

25. NBA Jam : Tournament Edition (PS1 Enhanced Version)

26. Driver 2 / 007 Racing

27. Broken Sword 1 And 2 (Old School Point-And-Click Adventure Series)

P.S. : Already Agree With The Inclusion Of FF7, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms.

As with the majority, I don't agree with their decision to exclude the Dual Shock functionality for the controllers or to not allow the system to connect to PSN to be able to pay for and download additional games online in the future and have trophy support. They're even being like Nintendo in terms of their New 3DS / 2DS portables and not including a proprietary AC adapter. I imagine some of this can and will be addressed. They will probably release 3rd party controllers with Dual Shock which are compatible with the Playstation Classic just like they eventually released 3rd Party wireless controllers for the SNES Classsic Edition. 3rd Party AC Adapters may be sold in the aftermath also.

In respect to the games list. It would be incredible if it somehow came with the original Time Crisis except that's basically a fantasy because it's never going to happen without some type of Guncon support (and that's basically never happening). They should include all 3 main installments of Final Fantasy on this, not just FF7. FF8 and especially FF9 is essential, as nothing truly compares to the cartoonish theme and setting of FF9. And the cut-scenes of course.

Chrono Cross is essential to its RPG Lineup as well. Gran Turismo 2 as its standout racing game. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 wins the crown over the original (which while the first ever in the series, is inferior in all aspects to THPS2). I would be willing to play it with a minimized soundtrack or a different one due to music rights.

While I own and understand that there are current remakes of the original Crash and Spyro series, I still think they should include the PS1 version of Crash Bandicoot 3 : Warped over Crash 1 or 2 as it was easily the most distinguished of the threeand in my opinion, the best in the original series. Crash Team Racing makes perfect sense as it doesn't even have a current remaster / remake yet and the lineup needs a true karting game to compete with Super Mario Kart on the SNES Classic and Mario Kart 64 on the inevitable N64 Classic Edition. Spyro 2 : Ripto's Rage and Spyro 3 : Year of the Dragon are equally as good. Either of the Spyro sequels would be a good choice. I hope that Sony is keeping at least some of this in mind. The probability of Sony doing all of this the right way is low.

Also : Syphon Filter 1 Or 2, Dino Crisis 1 Or 2, And Metal Gear Solid For The Stealth Shooters / 3rd Person Shooters.

This is the first "classic" console remake that I was remotely interested in getting. But knowing how the whole "supply and demand" thing goes with scalpers I'll hold off for now.

But it also made me wonder and wish for one thing. A DREAMCAST mini. Make a Dreamcast mini console with Sonic Adventure 1, Sonic Adventure 2, Power Stone, Shenmue 1, Shenmue 2, Dead or Alive 2, Grandia 2, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi and Skies of Arcadia. Or any variation including those and possibly more including the original design controllers (I actually find them quite comfortable) and I'd buy that thing day 1.

@R34Vegeta: There should be a Sega Saturn Classic prior to that. There's already a ton of Sega Genesis imitation consoles for modern televisions and portable versions. A Sega Dreamcast Classic would be the ultimate retro / throwback console in my opinion. You also forgot Soul Calibur and it would need some racing titles like Sega Rally Championship 2.

not sure how sony can justify making preorders live when they havent fully listed whats included on the product

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

@s7eventhheaven: A season pass is a preorder for something in which you have no clue what the product is. I'd say this better than that in that there's some details.

@s7eventhheaven: pre-orders can be cancelled at any time before shipping... your credit card will not be charged. i can also return the product AFTER it ships within 30 days... there is no reason not to pre-order if you are vaguely interested and concerned about supply come december. i won't hesitate to ccncel if i don't like the library of games etc...

Avatar image for luis2113

@s7eventhheaven: because people will give them money for something that should be included in the ps4 for free. The players want backwards compatibility. Here you go. A mini bc box!

Avatar image for Xristophoros

@luis2113: agreed. ps1 classics should have been included on ps4. no excuses for that but here we are i suppose...

Avatar image for luis2113

@Xristophoros: yes at least the ability to buy digital copies of ps1 games. Oh well I'm just taking a jab hoping that sony CEOs see this and decide to turn the switch.

Avatar image for Xristophoros

@luis2113: i'm sure they have considered but deemed it not to be a priority for whatever reason... either that or they decided to sell us this ps1 classic instead? but if it is just limited to 20 games versus the 150 on psn, that is quite a compromise indeed. i think they actually want us to hack the ps1 classic console in that case lol

Ill wait until I get a full list. I am guessing most of my old time favorites will NOT be included. Stuff like Resident Evil, Parasite Eve, MediEvil, Tomb Raider, Silent Hill, MGS, Dino Crisis, etc.

Now if they let us download games onto the console, I would get it in a heartbeat.

Avatar image for starchaser1981

@RELeon: I'm the most afraid for Final Fantasy 8 and 9. Are they going to put all 3 main FF installments, 2 out of 3, or just FF7? In my opinion, Final Fantasy IX / 9 was without doubt the best and the most distinguished. I'm praying that FF7 isn't the only Final Fantasy on this thing and that they don't include FF8 before FF9.

Avatar image for P00DGE

@RELeon: If this is anything like the SNES and NES, it will be easy to just put those games on yourself.

Avatar image for chippiez
Chippiez

@P00DGE:

except it wont be -- because having an extra 256 MB of flash on your board adds no cost, yet that holds dozens of SNES games. PS1 games were anywhere from 640MB to 3GB. Doubt Sony is going to absorb the cost of putting 128 GB of extra flash on board so you put your pirated images on there.

Avatar image for P00DGE
P00DGE

@chippiez: Sounds like it won't be worth buying then. The only reason I purchased a SNES classic was because I knew I could fill in the [MASSIVE] gaps that were left out. I doubled the number of titles. Nintendo even left a nice note to hackers in it, that basically said "have fun guys".

I am eagerly awaiting the N64 classic, regardless of what games Nintendo decides to roll with on it, because I will just fill in those gaps too.

Avatar image for starchaser1981

@pharoe777: I'm an avid collector so I want one of these but same here. I still have / own my original PSOne Slim with the LCD Screen attachment and the BC PS2 Slim (the latest model with the built-in / internal power supply) with all my favorite games which I myself, not Sony, selected / purchased myself. While I'm definitely getting one, I still completely understand this common argument against remaining PS1 and PS2 owners of any capacity going out of there way to get one of these.

$100, it better render in 4k with ps1 graphics with it and not 720p. hopefully nintendo 64 classic comes out too.

I just read about this on another site. One question I have is that this is 45% smaller, it looks like it cannot play the original discs? Does it have internal storage to download games? I am not sure why they would not put this obvious information out.

Avatar image for inkman66

@thermalcold: It will use the 8mm MiniDVD discs like the Gamecube used. Since PlayStation is copying the idea for NES Classic and SNES Classic, they figured they would just copy some more......

@Xristophoros: yeah, I am just like, um, IS this thing going to use discs? It is weird that nothing was said about that.....oh, btw, here is the link I got the info on, from an email-

Good luck with this Sony.

Avatar image for Xristophoros

@Zenopants: pre-orders are sold out everywhere... sony doesn't need your "luck" lol. hdmi out is the big benefit in getting one so you can play on a modern hdtv without the need for a decent upscaler which would set you back about $100 (it will be built into the ps1 classic console). not everyone has an old crt sitting around, nor the space. also, not everyone has a ps3 or vita to play ps1 classics via psn store...

Avatar image for luis2113
luis2113

@Xristophoros: or you could just play the games on a ps3,pc,mobile, xb1, or dreamcast.

They all have emulators for ps1.

Just like the new mini theres better and cheaper ways to play.

Avatar image for Xristophoros
Xristophoros

@luis2113: pc emulators are not always great and have many visual glitches... ps1 emulation on ps3 is quite good so i expect the performance to be on par on the ps1 classic. some of us like the plug and play aspect of these consoles as well. nobody ever said there aren't cheaper ways to play... but ps1 classic is the better and preferred way. the only limitation is the selection of games on the ps1 classic... but we'll see if there is a workaround or if sony will provide a way to add new ones...

Avatar image for luis2113
luis2113

@Xristophoros: yeah you have a point. if it's not just an emulator box and we have the option to use ds4 and can upload games. I'll think about buying one. Until then I won't unless it cost $29.99

@Xristophoros: no they don't need his luck they just need idiots to buy it... Possibly you? I bought a PS2 last year for 30 bucks and have acquired just about every great RPG for PS1 for less than 100. It also has component cables hooked up to my 4K TV.

Avatar image for Xristophoros
Xristophoros

@bentleyj10: yep, and the picture quality looks like ass on your 4k tv... and you are lying about every great jrpg for $100 lol... you would barely even get 5 for that much. no need for the spite and personal attacks if some of us are interested in this product. get a life. if it can be hacked and allows for 50 of the best jrpgs to be added, then who is the idiot here? you perhaps?

Avatar image for bentleyj10
bentleyj10

@Xristophoros: if it let's you download the games and they work well, fine it's worth it...but it probably won't. Also I said just about every great rpg. On Craig's got the ps2 with 2 controllers a pile of ps2 games and memory card for $30. Sold ps2 games and pieced together ff anthology, ff tactics, ff7, ff8, ff9, Star ocean: second story, Legend of dragoon, Grandia and Crono Cross all for less than $100. Obviously not every rpg but more than this $100 gimmick will have more than likely. Also with the component cables picture quality isn't bad especially with those games, PS2 games look awful but the smoothing effects for PS1 games makes it ok. As much as you've commented I can tell it's for you so no problem.
