PlayStation 4, Xbox One breaking records at Amazon
Outside of Kindles, combined preorder sales for both consoles would make up largest product release in Amazon's history across all categories.
The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are breaking records at Amazon, the retailer behemoth announced today. With three days to go before the PS4 launch on Friday, Amazon said it is working hard to prepare its fulfillment centers for what it expects to be "unprecedented demand" for the video game category this holiday season.
Excluding Kindles, if Amazon were to combine preorder sales of the PS4 and Xbox One it would make up the "largest product release in Amazon history" across all categories worldwide. This is "especially noteworthy," Amazon said, given the platforms' $400 and $500 price points.
Amazon also said preorders for the day-one versions of the PS4 and Xbox One were nearly two times that of total video game sales on Black Friday 2012. Specific figures were not announced.
Sony expects to ship more than 5 million PS4 units by the end of its fiscal year in March 2014. Meanwhile, Microsoft has not disclosed Xbox One sales expectations, though Electronic Arts management said during a call last month that both consoles are expected to ship around 10 million combined units by the end of that period.
