PlayStation 4 Tops US December Sales; Xbox One Wins Second Half of 2016

The NPD Group today released its initial report for December US sales, revealing how hardware sold during the month and more. Sony's PlayStation 4 was the top-selling console in the US during the month, according to VentureBeat, while the Xbox One saw strong performance as well.

A statement from Microsoft shared with GameSpot confirms that December 2016 was the "biggest month ever" for Xbox One sales in the US. Additionally, the Xbox One was the only new-generation console that showed year-over-year growth in the US during the month. Microsoft also said that the Xbox One was the best-selling console for the second half of 2016.

Additionally, Microsoft shared some further statistics about Xbox's performance

"In November and December we saw Xbox Live engagement reach an all-time high of 3.9 billion hours, up 23 percent compared to 2015 driven by fan excitement for the greatest games lineup," Xbox marketing VP Mike Nichols said. "Looking ahead, we expect 2017 to be a special year for gamers thanks to the upcoming launch of the most powerful console ever in Project Scorpio and a terrific portfolio of new games with Xbox Live support on Xbox One, Windows 10, or both."

Next week, the NPD Group will announce the top-selling games for December 2016 and presumably the full year. We'll report back with more details as they become available.

You can use euphemisms like "patriotic" all you want, it doesn't change the fact that it means you fail as a consumer. You should be looking at the product's (not the company's) UVP: Unique Value Proposition. What is it doing for me? Do I like it? What's my opportunity cost? What are my alternatives? Clearly, you need a product to fit your polical, bullshit protectionist agenda before you'll look at what it offers. Since there are no US alternatives to the product, that means you choose X1 by default, which makes you a tool, perhaps even racist.

Xbl subs, and minecraft, are the only things really making them money (-msft), even then those don't even put a dent into the annual cost of keeping the xbox brand name alive, which is why msft restructyred in a way that devided up xbox products and services into different devisions, to obscure those losses. @solid_snake1461: Gears 4, halo 5/master chief collection, quantum break, forza motorsport 6 (my favorite game), forza horizon 3, dead rising 4, state of decay 2, and halo wars 2. Yes, ps4 has more exclusives but its important to note that more than half of those exclusives are indie games and over 3/4 of them are single player only. I've said it for years and ill say it again, xbox makes multiplayer games and sony makes single player games.

(Fyi, the best rated game on xbox to date is an indie, and the game making msft the most money is an indie title... while your preciois AAA flagship titles are not only on other platforms, but poorly rated.)

I see them holding onto that position for awhile. They have a strong 2017 lineup that has already started with GR2 which was received well by critics and the PS4 will eventually drop in price once Scorpio enters the ring.

I also see people holding out on buying an X1 and saving for the Scorpio. There was also the cancellation of Scalebound, which was not the end of the world but still a title many were excited about.

I hope they both continue to do well as I love console gaming and want more future consoles. The day consoles are no longer made is the day im done gaming I hate PC gaming its full of hackers and cheaters that ruin online play and its so damn expensive.

@silversix_: lol that was actually pretty funny. In my opinion and many others the inferior console would be the one with less games (xbox one). So when Scorpio comes out I don't think much will change. Sure the multiplats will look a little better but the games is what really matters.

@pcps4xb: exclusives done sell well with less than 5 percent of console owners onps4 buying them it almost makes them irrelevant. This Gen has been about power not games as the top sellers have been 3rd party games.

@neoistheone: this gen has been about power for those fanboys online. 3rd party definitely sell better and are more popular selling across all platforms but exclusives do matter alot. That's what sells the console.
