Playstation 4 supports voice recognition

Sony confirms PlayStation Camera allows for voice recognition; more details to be shared ahead of November launch.

The PlayStation 4 will support voice commands, a Sony representative has confirmed.

No Caption Provided

"Sony Computer Entertainment can confirm that PlayStation Camera allows for voice recognition and we will look forward to sharing more details in the lead up to the launch of PlayStation 4 on November 29 [in Europe]," a Sony spokesperson told Polygon.

The confirmation comes shortly after an Amazon listing for the PlayStation Camera stated that it would allow features including "navigational voice commands."

Competitor Microsoft will offer voice command support for the Xbox One via Kinect.

The PS4 launches November 15 in North America, November 29 in Europe, and in 32 countries in all by the end of the year.

But no one will ever use it, because the camera is not included with every console.

The more I heard about the PS4, the more I look forward to it. I was always a little envious of the Kinect on the xbox, mainly for its voice recognition and gesture control. i use my ps3 for casual use a LOT, i typically just use the bluetooth remote and dont even have my game controller out, so having one less controller to lose would be great!

Oh no...look, voice recognition is great if you're handicapped or something, but for the rest of us it's just a gimmick. And I say this as someone who's experimented with PC voice recognition from the get go - most notably Nuance's Dragon 'Naturally Speaking' software. At the peak of its game, and getting more accurate (and processor hungry) with every installment, but even Nuance's package falters at around 95% accuracy. This is, of course, because even over the course of a single session, your voice timbre changes. More to the point here, is that just because it's possible, doesn't mean people WANT to talk to their hardware. I have yet to see anyone actually using Siri on iOS, where tapping out your intent wouldn't be just as fast, if not faster - not to say less embarrassing in public.

@grommmmmm I use voice commands on my Kinect every day and it works great. No disrespect to what you are saying, but just because you experimented with a program on your PC....doesn't really relate. They are very different functions and reasons behind the use of the voice recognition. My Kinect is probably only about 80% accurate. But for how handy it is on a daily basis, 80% isn't bad.

@grommmmmm I can't comment on siri, because I've only used an iPhone a few times - but on my android phone, I can tell you I use the voice recognition daily and I'm very impressed with its accuracy. the accuracy is so good, that i use it for texting almost as much as i use typeing for texting. In those situations where I have to respond or txt in the car (which is bad, yes i know) the voice recognition is extremely awesome!

Did they just add this? Seems like they are trying to hard to be like X1. Just stick to your original plan. There was nothing wrong with it.

You have to understand that any console can do voice recognition actually, it a software thing that even some low-priced phones have. Sony could have that feature since the beginning but dint talk about it like a "big" selling point since it's not... In fact even the Wii could have use vr if a dev would have wanted it in a game. ...but since M$ is "selling" the feature and some people are caught...Sony did reveal it if its so interesting to some people.

@ronnet I mean it's kind of a natural progression - I wouldn't necessairly say they are straight ripping X1 off. They included a camera with a microphone, so obvioulsy they would want to make it as feature rich and powerful as possible. i think being able to naviagte the OS by voice would be great in casual circumstances, as long as its accurate.

Dont act lime Sony is ripping M$, voici récognition is a pretty straightforward feature nowadays. Nothing new. I could give voice commands with the EyeToy on PS2 in some games and speak text to my PC 10 years ago...it's actually M$ that is ripping you people by making you think it's a "special feature" for wich you are proud to pay. Just like the Kinect on 360 was THE new way to play, how many people used it after a week except for less than 12yo?

@MrMilkmann @Mickeyminime Yeah, but that just tracked visuals. It didn't actually detect body movement like the Kinect, it basically just detects movement within pixels by looking for pixels that change colors. It was really pretty primitive.

@rene9ade520 @Paleamon @milomell @Mickeyminime i don't really consider the hand motion control with the PS3 controller as hand motion as you're still using the PS3 controller. X1 showed the hand control without a control. Don't get me wrong, both hand and voice command are a nice add on, but i only want a console for games, the extra's are not really what i'm after. I tend to think that the more you put in to a console with it's extra's, the more faults and flaws it will get. But that's just me though

@rene9ade520 @Paleamon @milomell @Mickeyminime hand motion like the X1 has where it can move things around or make certain things smaller when on the main screen. It was one of the first things showed by MS during the X1 show before E3 where it was all TV TV TV TV TV COD and so on

@SirToxe Its only as mandatory as anything on the One. The One works without the Kinect. Yeah it comes in the box, but its not costing anything more so you can just shelf the thing, trash it, or pawn it and buy a game with the cash.

@SirToxe that's ridiculous. Why would I post it if I didn't believe it. When the PS3 came out it was $600 which was much more than the 360. PS fans argued that it was because it came with a blue-ray player...which is fair enough. It had a feature that the 360 did not. If you took the PS4 and XOne and put them side by side, its obvious that the One has many more features. After all, that's what everyone has been complaining about right? "it has so many features its not a game console" or whatever. Bottom line, it IS still a very strong gaming console but does in fact also include a lot of other cool features. More features cost more money. As for the Kinect, Microsoft built their entire interface with the Kinect in mind and also wants to make sure it gets in peoples homes so developers will create better software for the thing. They aren't focused on making sure the consumer is paying more for something they don't want, they are more focused on trying to include it as cheap as possible so they can make a better profit off the new software that will be developed as a result. So, they throw it in practically for free. But the extra $100 price point, that is because the console does more than the PS4.

@Enundr @blue_shift_91 Just wait...now that every One owner will have one in their house, and with all the upgrades, you'll see what the Kinect can really do. Just as navigation alone it has already done a lot for the 360 and there is little you can do currently. But even so, I browse my 360 from my kitchen while doing dishes....browse music, movies, etc and then check my social for who I'm gonna game with once I finish with what I'm doing. The One is gonna vastly improve on something that I already get a lot of use out of, and I'm as hardcore of gamer as the next guy.

@Enundr @blue_shift_91 Because no one wants them as customer yet Sony wants "THEM" in their system. After all these backlash from Microsoft customers.

So either Sony Playstation division is retarded or they really attempting to match xbox one's extra features that ps4 didnt offered.

rofl. "smart" enough. you kids really need to learn how a business works. optional is great and all, but sony will likely see little to no support for the thing. there goes all that R&D money. sony's good at losing money, in case you didn't know.

@Enundr @arqe @blue_shift_91 You aren't paying for the Kinect. The price point of the XOne is the same as the price point was for the 360 when it first released....I know, I bought one the day it came out. Its the same price, only it comes with not only the Kinect, but also a headset and 4k rated HDMI cord as well. XBox has just as many options if not more, its just that people are being too close minded to realize it. If you don't want to use the Kinect, unplug it. If you really don't want to use it, bring it to a pawn shop and sell it for $50 bucks, then turn around and buy a game.

@arqe @Enundr @blue_shift_91 Backlash from Microsoft customers? Huh? You mean cause of the DRM thing? Cause casual gamers don't care about that, its only the hardcore gamers that have been bitching about that. If anything, probably the only demographic that didn't really have anything to say on the matter are those same ones that are most interested in features like this. And the thing with that demographic is, they could care less which motion/voice controlled product they get cause they just pick up whichever one is on the shelf. Yes, if that is what they want, they will most likely be happier with a Kinect, but they will never know cause they just buy whatever one they see first. ...and since the PS4 has a lower price tag, it will more likely be their choice.....then they will regret it later when it gathers dust once they realize it doesn't have Mario Kart. Ha ha

@arqe @Enundr @blue_shift_91 or theyre smart enough to have them there as an OPTION , you know the thing ppl keep saying was taken away from xbone at E3? ppl like to have options , forcing ppl to buy kinect sorta make it feel like you have less option with the system , there are ppl that just flatout dont care for voice commands or motion control , theyre at home just to be lazy after a long day at work and such. that option is taken away if they want to have an xbone but no kinect , theyre forced to pay for a kinect , a thing they dont want , ppl work for their money and dont want to waste it on something they dont want. hence the hate for the xbone yet you see little to no hate for ps4 for its camera that is OPTIONAL. it seems to be a hard concept to understand for the die hard xbone fans , but people LOVE to have options in what they get , how to do it , etc.
