PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds Tops 1M Concurrent Players For First Time, Crushing Almost Every Other Game On Steam

A Steam first for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds on PC.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is on a roll; after just hitting 10 million PC sales, it has now surpassed 1 million concurrent players on Steam for the first time.

At the time of this writing, PUBG hit a record peak of 1,028,275 players. It far surpassed the number of concurrent players playing Dota 2 (a regular occurrence now), but it's not high enough to snatch the all-time record from the game. Dota 2's all-team peak number of players is 1,295,114 (the highest ever recorded, according to SteamDB), so PUBG still needs to get 200K+ more concurrent players to truly unseat Dota 2 as the reigning multiplayer champion. Its creator, Brendan Greene, is confident that's a likely possibility; he suggested PUBG could hit League of Legend-level success in the future.

Keep in mind, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is still in Early Access. Despite that, it's currently way ahead of all the other top 10 games on Steam, include Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and it's also coming to Xbox One later this year, with Microsoft on board as its publisher. Developer Bluehole is leaving the possibility of other console releases open at this time.

PUBG is also about to get new features and content. An update to the game is scheduled for next week. "Some of the key features of the new build include a new weapon, foggy weather condition, FPP leaderboards, and multiple bug fixes," Bluehole said in a tweet, adding that the test servers will be up for at least two days early next week. While its release is still far off, Bluehole has also revealed more details about the PUBG's anticipated desert map, which won't be smaller than the game's first map after all.

@mrdinghat: Who still says that after 2016 (seriously, I didn't see this for a while)? There is that big space simulator (forgot the name...!) and Elite Dangerous, then Japanese games are making a come back on PCs, and more. With so many things going on for PCs, I can't take that seriously (even back then it was somewhat weird, it just had different games than consoles. now, it has most games consoles have unless it's a deal to remain exclusive on consoles like Demons' Souls and BloodBorne).

Even indies (well, most) are blooming on that side and go on consoles later. Gaming is born on PC anyway (we can't develop on consoles folks!).

You know what this shows? Just put a game with guns on Steam, and with luck, it'll fly!

Look at the list. Most of them are shooters. It'll be right at home on Microsoft consoles.

N still they enforced loot crates on a buggy game that isn't even released and have stock assets from unreal engine. Bluehole made shit ton of money but instead of performance updates they give us loot crates.

@hrv_25: Aren't the stock assets there to be used "as is"? Perhaps add a few shades and effects to modify them a little.

Anyway, I wonder how this game is. From the way you put it, sounds cheap, early access stage, and buggy (well, games on EA are generally buggy, but to say that an EA is buggy means that it's extra buggy)?

@kaminobenimizu: point is they didn't work on the game from scratch. It is still buggy and unoptimised game. New update is arriving so let's see what that brings. It's buggier than Bethesda games. Mechanics are awful. Buy it when they officially release it.

@hrv_25: Let's hope they won't let this "concurrent users" go to their heads, and fail to fix the game in a timely manner. But yeah, most of the time, I stay away from EA games.

@kaminobenimizu: game is nowhere near as bad as this guy makes it sounds. A little buggy? yes. Mostly at the beginning of the match you get a bit of lag or glitching as everything on a MASSIVE map with 100 players loads. Only other real bugs that hurt gameplay are jumping which they're working on a fix and sometimes parachutes getting stuck or getting thrown off a roof when landing. Very minimal effect to actual gameplay. because if something crappy happens and you die, you just go get into another game immediately. And they've done a lot to fix and add on to the game already. The devs are actually very active and at this point are down to the big fixes before full release, yet are still looking to give us some cool stuff like new guns, new weather etc

@kckbxrk: So this is basically a rival to PlanetSide 2? Ummm. Pretty ambitious indeed. There are so many games to check I fail to check the lastest trends, being stuck with studying games of the past. I should catch up both in the old, and the new. Or I'll end up master of none, nor a jack of all trades.

Ooph! I'll YouTube it today and see what all the buzz is about. Considering it seems like PS2, I can see why it could explode. And perhaps might be even better considering it's still in EA and nearly dethroned Valve's own DOTA2.

@kaminobenimizu: to be honest, i was very underwhelmed by it when i started. I would play a few rounds here or there when i didn't have a ton of time to game....now it is my go to game daily and i sink hours into it. Once you start getting into the strategy of finding people and fighting/surviving it gets to be more fun. The key is also friends. Play in duos or squads and the fun level increases tenfold. Now i can't wait for new content to push through with my buddies.

@kckbxrk: Heh! I am glad you ended up liking the game despite not digging it at first. It already turned out to be the Minecraft of FPS in terms of popularity. I wonder how it'll turn out later.

@kaminobenimizu: if things keep going like this is should go well. I mean theres a lot of people complaining but this is one of the few early access games that i've seen the developer and team this active in providing updates and communicating with the players. So all signs point up!

It will surpass Dota2, and it will do it before it is even officially released.

More content, and more polish can make this a very memorable game with a nice healthy long life.
