Play Super Mario 64 in Your Browser

Computer science student recreates the 1996 Nintendo 64 classic's first level.

Computer science student Erik Roystan Ross has brought Super Mario 64 to PC. He's recreated the iconic 1996 Nintendo 64 game's first level, Bomb-omb Battlefield, and has released his creation for the world to play.

You can either download the game via his website or play it right now in your browser using the Unity Web Player. All of this is free.

Ross' recreation of Super Mario 64 is pretty spot-on, nailing the character models and environments quite well. There are some changes, however.

"Everything is just as you remember, except some really minor stuff that nobody cared about like red coins or the Wing Cap or the Big Bob-omb," he says. "Replacing them are crowd-pleasers like giant springs and coin blocks."

The game works with keyboard and mouse controls as well as various Xbox and PlayStation inputs.

Don't expect Ross to develop other Super Mario 64 levels, however. He doesn't plan on building other worlds, such as the excellent Tiny-Huge Island, saying he'll only return to the game to fix major bugs.

"I currently do not have any plans to develop this any further or to resolve any bugs, unless they’re horrendously gamebreaking and horrendously simple to fix," he said. "This project is provided as-is, and you are free to use it for any purposes you like, with the exception of selling it for profit. All included code libraries' previous licences still apply."

If you're looking for an official, full version of Super Mario 64, the game is available through the Virtual Console on Wii. You can also go into your closet and fire up your Nintendo 64 if you'd rather play that way.

Remastering this game would definitely be a boon for Nintendo. It may not be any new game or Third Party game for Nintendo but it would definitely give Nintendo more $$$$.

Also good job to the student for creating this.

Well hopefully the fan community will pick up the game and make the rest of it. I'd LOVE to see this full game. :)

Did anyone else misread that as "Play Super Mario 64 as Bowser"?

<< LINK REMOVED >> I have to admit. That was my favorite things to do. After I finished the game. I would spend countless hours using the wing cap. and flying all over the place

I don't get why people is hating on this, this is great! I played Mario 64 at the time and i think it's cool to see a young student recreating something this accurately.

<< LINK REMOVED >> People are not hating on the guy for creating this, they are hating on the guy for plagiarizing a work that isn't his and making it available for free. Until copyright materials are in the public domain, no one has the right to touch them or recreate them for any purposes. Doing so violates the terms of the IP owners and show a slight disrespect to the original work and its creator. If fans respect the original material they need to support it by buying the product, not copying it and making it as their own.

A slight parody would had work better than an exact remake of the original. That's like if you rewrote the entire Lord of the Rings books as your own and instead of making Gollum die, you had Sam and Frodo rescue him from Mt. Doom. You just can't do that unless you are the original creator/author or had permission from them. This applies to any form of media out there including videogames. Not saying the guy doesn't had talent, just saying the guy better use that talent for his own original work than a work from someone else.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I see your point leeko, since i work with this kind of stuff everyday. But i see his work more like a technical exercise honestly. I don't see all that fuss about it, it's like a fan remixing a song...also i don't think he's trying to make money out of it. And sincerely i hope one day people like this guy gets hired by Nintendo to do a Pc versions of their game, why not. The fact that he maybe have said that the first boss of the game is "useless" well, that's actually disrespectful. But the rest...i don't think so. Anyway it's good to clarify, thanks for your comment.

I hope Nintendo removes this. We dont need an oversaturation of wannabe Nintendo HD games. Its bad enough we get wannabe Indie Nintendo like games.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Agreed, Nintendo should take this down...

... then release their own HD Mario 64 and charge 50 bucks for it !

Meh this doesn't look that good anyways so not worth a download. I already got this game for DS and N64 so missing this half-ass unfinished version is fine with me.
